Thread: /Cover...The Magic Bullet Theories

Anyone who visits the forums regularly has seen any number of rediculous theories about taking cover. I've read everything from using AAs/CAs to help, zooming in to 1st person, facing backwards, waiting 5 seconds, and they all have on thing in common. None of them work for everyone, 100% of the time. Like many others, I've done EXTENSIVE testing trying to figure out what's wrong.

I found a nice spot of land, located just outside of Theed, Naboo for testing. There is a totally flat stretch of land which leads to an incline, which allowed for testing on both types of terrain. Using different testing methods, I did 50 tests on the flat land, and 50 on the incline, for each test. A total of 100 attempts was performed for each theory. I will also note that after each attempt, I stood up and went prone again. If you are successful at gaining cover, then break it...your next attempt has 100% success if you remain prone. My results are posted below:

Bonus to Cover (BE enhanced clothing)

Success Rate: 57%

Going prone, waiting 5 seconds, then /cover

Success Rate: 66%

Zooming in to 1st person mode

Success Rate: 59%

Turning around, facing away from intended target

Success Rate: 60%

Going prone, crawling forward, then /cover

Success Rate: 62%

There was a significantly greater chance of gaining cover while on the flat terrain versus the incline. It was nearly double. As you can see from my results, no one method works much better than the other, and what works for you today may not work tomorrow...or even on the very next lair for that matter. The issue is tied to line-of-sight (LoS) and is supposedly being looked at by the dev team.

What we know about /cover:

You can not go into cover while anything (NPC, player, droid, vehicle) is within 20m of you.

Any of the above objects will also break cover if they get within 20m of you, even group members.

What you may not already know about /cover:

You will hear a "clunk" sound as thewarm-up bar initiates if taking cover is going to fail.

You MUST have a toolbar icon for /cover. If the icon flashes red, it is going to fail.

If you are unable to take cover, you will also fail when attempting to use sniper shot.

In summary, there is no real solution. This ability should work all the time, on any terrain. Period. We shouldn't have to sit and tinker with it for 10 minutes to get it to work. Waiting for 5 seconds appears to be the best solution according to my own testing, but whatever works best for you, keep doing it.

i agree, it always works 100% of the time if your on a doorstep, just a little thing i thought i'd add. also you can use sniper shot if you don't take cover, or at least i could.

snipershot does not require cover (correct )

doorstep - does allow for cover much more often (as was stated about 2x as often)

i know that snipershot doesn't have to be in cover, but why does its success rate also vary? I mean i have to use it 3 times for it to actually fire something, the other two just cancel out

Perhaps I didn't write that clearly enough. I'm not saying that you have to be in cover to use sniper shot. Sniper shot, cover, and conceal shot are all tied to being prone and the line-of-sight issues. What I should've said was this:

Head to a lair or whatever, and select a target. Make sure you are within shooting range (45m or 64m depending on your level). Now, go prone and try to take cover. Just try it once. If it fails, try to use sniper shot on your target. Iguaranteethat it willfail to fire. Whatever this bug is, the issues are tied to being prone.

If you're not on absolutely flat ground both cover and sniper shot will fail. Which is why using a doorstep (perfectly flat) or camp (flattens area) makes both shots magically work.

Kind of annoying that I need to keep novice scout in my template purely so I can drop camps to shoot from.

I thought it was fairly clear, DaneSavo, but going by the reply right above me, apparently you weren't clear enough.

/cover, /concealshot and /snipershot ***WILL*** work on ***ANY*** terrain you care to mention. Except whilst swimming.
It is purely ***far more likely*** to work on ***FLAT*** terrain. Not "you must be on flat terrain or it will ALWAYS fail." It's just a lot more likely.

With patience, I can get /snipershot to work regardless of terrain. It's the "with patience" part that needs sorting out.

First attempts at using one of the skills are much more likely to fail than subsequent attempts, with the exception of something being within range and thus not allowing /cover to work, of course.

it's good to see some numbers, but where's your control? what's the success rate doing the same number of tests on the same terrain without doing anything special to "help" it work? Otherwise it's hard to say if those tests are at all meaningful if cover could have a 55-65% success rate on its own without any of those methods anyways.

I still think Cover should be breakable by oppositefaction/Hostile/Attackable Targets/using a not intended Special...
