Thread: 12 skill points to spend in rifleman
I know this probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but it has to be said:
Rifleman isn't a dabbler's profession. Having mastered it myself, and taken my time doing so, I can honestly say that if you're not planning to take it all the way to the last skill box, you probably shouldn't enter the profession at all.
But, everyone has their own agenda, and I can't tell you how to play your game. If I only had twelve skill points to spend in Rifleman, I would probably go 0-0-3-0. Others will certainly disagree, but in my opinion that's where you'll get the most power from the skill points you've alloted yourself.
Im ust agree with ^. But even with 0030 you will have almost no spd mods making you completely useless.
Another route you might consider is 0003. You get a AOE I think could be wrong(may not be until 0004), and spd mods. B

Nope, you are correct. Flushingshot2 is at 0003.

JuJutsu,
It really depends on what you have spent your other points on. For instance, if you have Swordsman in your build, you may want to go 3 0 0 0. You do not get the speed from the special abilities line, but with only 12 points in Rifleman, you are probably not looking to kill your target with Rifleman skills alone. Thus going 3 0 0 0, not only would you get increase accuracy from that line, but you would get Mindshot2, Headshot3, and Surpriseshot with that build. That gives you a higher level bleed than Mindshot1 from Marksman plus two 3x damage single target specials, one of which hits mind (Headshot3). Thus, you could shoot Mindshot2 to get a bleed going (I have even heard rumor that Mindshot1 will still stack with it). This can single pull thetarget as well. Then fire either Headshot2 or Headshot3 depending on whether or not your mind is buffed (Headshot3 has high HAM costs, so you need to be careful in using it without a high focus). Then if it gets to you, as it probably will, switch to Swordsman and continue attacking mind. If you have TK, they have a mind attack as well, so you could still do this. Obviously, if you have Bounty hunter eyeshot, this would also work.
Ifyou have no other mind attacks, then you will probably want to go up Special abilities(0 0 0 3) to get the speed. This will give you Flushingshot1 and Flushingshot2, both can dizzy, but Flushing2 is also area effect. This still will not make you anywhere near as fast as a Master, but it will give you good boost to your speed (personal speed mod of 60 rather than 30), and speed is very important for Rifles.
Alternatively, you can go 0 0 3 0 to get Flushingshot1, Startleshot1, and Flushingshot2. Both Flushingshots have a chance to stun which lowers target defenses, and Flushingshot2 is both area effect and a 4x damage modifier, second only to Strafeshot2 for damage.
Finally, you could choose to spend 10 points to get 0 11 0or 0 1 0 1. This would give you either Concealshot (kill things without being aggroed) and Flushingshot1 (stun) or Concealshot and Flurryshot1 (dizzy) plus a little more speed. This would leave you 2 points to spend somewhere else.
If I was doing mind damage with another profession, I would go 3 0 0 0. Otherwise, if I had good combat skills with another profession that did not target mind, it would probably be better to go 0 0 0 3, but 0 0 3 0 is a viable alternative. If I did not have a lot of other combat skills, I would go 0 1 1 0 probably. Using Concealshot, you can kill stuff without getting aggroed most of the time. I would go with Flushingshot as the second one because the stun with Flushingshot1 willprobablybe more useful than Flurryshot1'sdizzy and the +40 to speed vs. +30 is not going to be that noticable of a change.

Ok to get the laughing out of the way.... main profession for this character [my second account] is Image Design. I've given up on Musician as anything I ever want to do again. I'd like to use my remaining 158 skill points to go Master Scout and Ranger 4 0 4 0. I need a weapon skill to hunt fauna, so i was thinking that Marksman 4 0 0 0 and Rifleman + 12 skillpoints would be a way to go.
You've all made pretty good arguments that this would be braindead. I wonder If i can hunt with a pistol....
Thanks again for the advice.
rifles are not close in weapons and the problem your going to have is "how do i kill this thing that is chewing on me?!??!?"
the most efficient method is headshot. the problem is that the time multiplier for headshot is pretty large. to offset that the answer is 0003. you get a area attack and use of mindshot1 bleeds to easily single pull most animals. and a nice focused attack in headshot2. couple that with a uber fast T21 or a laser rifle that is also fast prefereably in the 4-4.9 speed range and you will do fine in taking out single critters at close range.
as stated before the problem with rifles is that it is anti-dabble. the only useful way to dabble in rifle is to get your accuracy bonuses elsewhere as your doing with scout and ranger and then focus on the speed line and rely mainly on the marksmen specials of headshot2 and mindshot1
you will not be good at PVP of any sort do to missing speed and accuracy and the higher damage specials. you can successfully dabble in rifles for monster hunting smaller game but you wont be of much use in a group hunt on big dangerous game.

not sure why your mastering ranger that is up to you. the rest of the ranger tree other than tracking seems like a waste of effort and points at the moment. i play around in the tracking tree from time to time depending on need and i am fond of being able to track and the bonuses i get for hunting animals. the other three branches seem a bit pointless.
i should experiment more with the trapping line especially with chef foods that boost trapping just about anything short of a krayt can be trapped with ease. not sure if the duration of the effects is increased or not.
but i digress...
i would opt for a jawa or a speedy E11 before i took up a spraystick. AP is far more important than raw speed if it is a trade off between the two.
rifle abilities3 has a decent fire rate and my dewback can tank a single rancor with me using headshot2 at abilities3 with a 4.4 speed T21.
but get a spraystick and try it out it may be the thing for u. i just dont care for em.
