Thread: Should we charge for training?
I filled out most of my lower-to-middle tier rifleman boxes back before their were very many riflemen on my server (Eclipse). Since I went without pets, it took me longer to fill out the last couple of level-3 and level-4 boxes. I had to go pay the trainer for every box. In case you haven't added that up, that is a LOT of money. Since I am at work I am thinking that it is 9x4 + 7x4 + 5x4 + 3x4 = 96K $ + Master Rifleman which I forget the cost (10K?). So anyway, over 100K $.
When people I dont know ask me to train them, I've charged a couple of times at 1/2 to 1/3 of what it would cost at the trainer. Sometimes I am in a hurry and just do it for free. How do the rest of you feel about this?
you can take this on two different routes.
Yes to charge. I have paid for training. I needed an elite skill and found a master. He wanted 3k for the training. I gladly paid it. It beats the 8k i would have to pay for the trainer.
OR
Give it for free. I have gotten training for free. I alway tip 1k for any free training. But you run the risk of not being tipped. It is not a requirement to tip.
So do what you want. I don't see anything wrong with either. Of course it helps both of you. You need the App XP they need the skill box. If you are a master then maybe you don't. But you never know when you will need to master another profession. Personally, i don't ask for anything to train. I have been tipped all kinds of stuff. a skil tape with a +1 rifle accuracy, to 1k, to a crate of weapon pwr ups.
So in the end it is up to you. I will not fault you for asking a reasonable price. If it is too steep, I will not pay and get it elswere. Gotta love the market place.
Guess it depends on how you view it - as a Business Service, or a friendly service to other players. I provide these things as friendly services (and in many cases, training or healing players benefits you with XP so it's a mutual service).
I'm also a Doctor, I never charge people for heals or wound heals either. Obviously a lot people tip me for wound healing as a thank you, but my point is you can make back that money without saying "Ok, but I charge 3k for that training". People are often thankful for your services and repay you for your kindness anyways. It's sorta like I gave an armorsmith 30k for armor he was going to give me for free due to the time delay he took in making it, or giving the smuggler who gets that slice you were hoping for an extra 20k tip because now you don't need to buy new armor. What goes around comes around, that Master Smuggler has always and continues to charge me almost nothing for slices, and he even logs in his character just to do a slice for me. About the only thing I would charge people for out of my abilities (Pistol/Doctor) is Enhancements as those cost a lot of expensive resources to make, and it's not something I can just give away to anyone who wants them. Really anyone who has had good buffs can tell you it's worth the 5-6k Docs are charging for a fullset (one mission usually pays that off).
And since you say you were one of the first players, wouldn't you have made back or money from training or passively thru time doing missions etc? I could definitely see in the earlier stages of the game 6 months ago charging people since it was cheaper and servers were still young and so were you, but now not so much.
When it comes down to it, just do as you will.
Another thing that I have found is that generally "being nice" be it by training for free, giving away rifles that get a speed slice (novices need em, worthless to me), giving away extra harvests to medics, tipping entertainers/medics, etc. can really provide you with a mutually beneficial bond. I have about 3 doctors/CMs that are "friends for life" because of the amount of meat I have given them for med crafting. And to me, having a friend that I can call for help/buffing/whatever is much more longterm beneficial than making a few credits that I can pretty easily gain in other ways.
Of course, this is all just my opinion, and as I said I am really not *opposed* to charging for training... It just seems to me that it is possible to gain rewards beyond credits for being friendly and taking the time out to train folks for free.
I never charge but I always tip 10% of what the skill costs if you go to a trainer, 20% if your an imp.
Plus the more money that stays in the economy the better. The rifleman I train today might buy armor from the armorsmith I sell hides to tomorrow. He is less likely to do so if he has to give money to an NPC trainer.

Other than that i dont have a problem training people for free, because as mentioned it only takes a few moments.
Btw does anyone know where i can get another Kick Butt Laser Rifle because my current 2 are about to poof /sniffle
The 2 ihave now are
6.3 92 597 28% 45 69 81
side note it was a great couple of slices which i paid inexcess gladly for
I'de pay for training, o wait,I can't,I have 10k to my name currently
But seriously ifI couldI would find no problem paying for elites skill training.

I have never charged anyone for training. And I paid for every skill box in the Rifleman tree because there were no riflemen around me to ask for training. (Except Aldeon but he was an imperial bleah!!
)
Usually if I get tipped for training I accept it as a sign of respect for the person tipping me. If I feel the tip was too much for the skill trained (usually anything over 10-20% of what they would pay the Trainer is too much for me) I return it explaining that I really don't need the money.
The fact that people don't tip more is a shame. If you go and ask someone for a favor you should TRY to do something in return. Maybe you tell me up front you don't have much cash but you have some hide you could give me. Or do I need a copy of Rebel Orders 1/3 (cause you have 3 of them). I have never accepted training from a stranger without offering something in return.
From a roleplaying aspect I figure that if I am an expert with a Rifle and a young apprentice comes to me and asks for help with his sniping skills, I can spend a couple of minutes while we are at the shuttle waiting for departure giving him a few pointers. It costs me nothing, I'm just passing the time helping someone with similiar interests.
