Thread: 2/3 of a football field is our max range?

Gimmie a break! I mean the average distance of combat encounters in the real world is over 75m and is commonly up to 300m. Our combat rifles today have complete capability to accuaretly shoot up to 500m open sight without a scope. I know that its not possible to have the same in the game, but 64m is way to low for a rifle... Heck thats even low for pistols. I can myself shoot pretty well up to 75m with a 9mm. I think rifles should be able to shoot at least 100m if not more.

i sooo agree!!! rifleman are gimped as far as distance goes and it has really made me think of going with pistols lately because of it.. i mean by the time i stand from prone a melee is already on top of me hacking away at my brains. and since rifles have such bad penalties at close range i may as well just lay down my rifle and ask for a swift clean death

Well the nerf bat is slowly coming around and perhaps someday they'll look into leveling us out a little bit with other marksman professions. With carbines doing the knockdown and the numerous pistol advatanges, somethings gotta come out way sooner or later....at least we can hope for something....

In my other post, this is one of the issues I intend to bring up. I would like to see it at 100 meteres max range. Or even varied, T21 100 meters, Laser Rifle 90 meters, others 80 meters.

I heard do to the engine and lag issues its really not possible and will never happen. I didnt really understand the physics behind it (what I read), but everytime I see a post about this someone chimes in with the 'ol "due to lag its not possible" reply.

Its easily possable to make it 100 meters out. 150 meters its not, but 100 meters out, I can see my enemy. Players and/or mobs come in at 128 meters away. Wich means at 100 meters, we have 28 meters of safe zone.

I'm fine with the 64 meter maximum range. What I have a problem with is the ability of pistols to hit just as accurately at that range as rifles do.

You can even headshot someone in RL with a 70 Year old rifle at 500m...

64m is a joke.

I am as well, and if they were to decrease pistol accuracy from this distance, I would remove my opinion on having more range.

They really should increase our range to at least 100 for rifles. With 64 meters and the damage penalty for rifle wielders in melee its way unbalancing.

Even if a scope power-up would add range would be nice. Yes, I realize, SWG is not RL, however, I like all of you believe that rifleman is hampered by range restrictions, especially given the melee distance penalties. Either give us more range or don't let us get whacked 2x harder than other firearms in melee.

I agree with both the rifle's range being too short and the ridiculous close combat penalty. That's a double whammy, so to speak. Generally if I can't kill something in my initial 4 shots and it's not a very slow mob, like durni speed slow, I'm probably going to die (well, now I'm working on swordsman, but I believe all combat lines should be self sufficient in combat!).

Understanding the reasons for range limitations, I'd like to see top end scoped rifles with ranges out to the maximum npc clipping plane. Otherwise, other ranged weapons should be brought back into line with the rifles range, using the rifle as a guide as it has the longest range and long range is the limiting factor in the range scale. A carbine could be 2/3 the full rifle range, and pistols 1/3.

It would also be nice to tame the point blank damage modifiers so we can have options other than choosing another class or dying if we don't one or two shot something.

Then again, with the pile of bugs and issues the game has, my faith is seriously lacking.

I really drag my feet on arguments about play balance, because they are often grounded in poor tactics or not fully utilizing a particular skill. However, I find I agree with this also. I have played a lot of rifle and have gotten my specialist. I am not far behind and pistol and carbine. When I first started using rifle, I assumed it would have a longer range than a pistol or carbine. I was shocked to discover it did not!!

It is not practical gamewise to have sniper rifles that reach 1000m. But I agree with the 1/3-2/3 idea. Pistoleers would start screaming "nerf" for this, but it makes perfect sense to make pistol 32m, carbine 64m and rifle 96m. That would be well within the 128m for detecting things. That would go a long way toward leveling the classes. After all, they are generally slower and carry much larger HAM costs, too. Without some range benefit to compensate, what's the reason to even use rifle? There is the argument that rifles will generally do a greater amount of damage than pistols or carbines of the same class , but with all the different weapons out there, and slicing, that doesn't really hold much water either. And if a creature runs up on you, forget hitting it. I swap to 2-hand melee at that point.

I would be interested in hearing any arguments saying the rifle IS balanced
