i want to correct this. only master lightsaber master defender will have both block and defense against ranged attacks. most jedi go for mls and some mix of healing and enahncer and seldom take up defender. lightsaber toughness only protects from melee damage. if the jedi does not have the jedi toughness from defender then they have 0 toughness and 0 damage reduction against all ranged attacks. so if you look at it on a DPS pov when fighting non-master defenders the dps is pretty much the same as that against melee fighters.

its when the jedi takes up master defender mls and healer 4004 that the non-jedi really start having trouble. however this template is especially weak against other jedi so most dont take it up.
