You know, I've seen these area attack questions before, and I have seen this answer before, and thought, yeah, that makes sense.
But that is not the case. I thinkmultiple targetshots are just a bit buggy. They do some weird stuff and I don't know what makes them tick. I know you don't have to be aggro though and I think most can agree. I've used area shots on Stormtroopers and had some non-aggro animal from a nearbye lair come after me cause the strafe hit it too. I have seen them come and attack the Stormies too, heh, cause they use area attacks. I've used area attacks on an AT-ST and had it hit a bugged NPC rebel commando that was targetable to me. Of course anyone that has done this knows it gives you a reverse faction TEF, after this the NPC rebel and turrets open fire on you, heh.

The system they have in isn't perfect, in fact, its retarded. I believe the hope was that with area attacks you would only hit, and thus only aggro that which you wanted to. However, this is only true to a point, that point is usually the second area shot.
Ex: From a long time of being a rifleman, I usually find this happens most oftenly.
Say I come up on some stormies standing around a vir vur lair. Ok, since this is an RPG, I should be a skilled enough rifleman to use an area shot, and only hit the targets I want to (the stormies in this case). So I fire flushing shot 2. The first shot hits only the stormie I have targeted, but stuns everything in the cone. The second volley hits everything, but still only damages the stormie I have targeted. However, the server registers two hits on everything in the cone in front of me and triggers an aggro, sending everything after me.
Its a very flawed system in which they failed to accomplish what they wanted. I just wish they'd decide to either have area attacks hit everything in the cone, no questions asked, or implement some coding for assosciation volley hits. (i.e. I've targeted an imperial NPC, the flushing shot should hit every imperial NPC, but not the creatures, which have no relation to the Imperial NPC)
To qualify in the AoE damage the MOB has to target you for combat, via autofire or by BAF effect or whatever means. The current technique is to get a pet to tank for a group member to tanks and fire away. Using a pet targets you instantly and the pet -the critter goes for closest first. A friend tanking requires you to shoot and hope for BAF effect. If the MOB does not you may have to pop each one individually and THEN use the AoE.
Annoying, ain't it
For some reason TEF overides this rule, but that kind of makes sense. There is a bug, where the dead bodies rack up extra hits on the rest of the targets. Large piles of bodies have been rumored to have pushed damage to some targets in the 30k range. btw: it has been verified that H.Swordsman see this effect too.
