I respeced from Ranger/Rifles recently. What ought to be a great combo blows right now because ranger is absolutely burried in suck. It burns ALL your skill points and gives you abilities that are either useless (camps), merely convienient (terrain negotiation, tracking, camo) or useful, but totally inferior to similar abilities in other professions (traps).
But anyhow, here's a couple things I learned as MRifle, MRanger:
- Use the ranged arms! Not only do they let you milk that snare with the extra range, but check this out: conceal shot onecritter froma groupfrom outside 65m. Eventually the creature you shoot will discover you. DON'T STAND UP! Just kill it from your stomach. If you stay prone outside 65m from the other critters, they won't agro and you can kill all of them one by one!
- Maskscent/Camo does not help you in fights! It only prevents you from getting in them. As soon as you enter combat all the rulesfor "does it see me/does it not" are exactly the same whether you're camo or not. I've tested. Get the same number of conceals off, every time.
- That P-dart/kneecap shot combo is about the only thing that can keep you alive PVE, but since P-darts are fixed and don't root anymore, its a lot of effort to keep going. And if you get a couple trap failures against that krayt dragon, you're f-ed.
-You can't handle multiple targets, so don't try.
- Get a harvesting droid and drop down to novice scout, which is all you need to use it. This lets you harvest almost as well as master ranger. Since harvesting is the only really unique AND useful ability ranger/scout gets, this gets it for you and only uses 15 skill point instead of uh... all of them.
Rifleman in general, is the suckyest Combat profession in the game.
Compaired with other combat profs, our ability to deal out sustained High damage, is grossly under powered.
We have only two HIGH DAMAGE attacks, compaired to The others who each have atleast 4 - 5 High Damage Specials.
We have Huge restrictions on the Two High Damage Specials that we do have.
The ammount of damage that our conceal & sniper shots do, is only about 40% of the damage that the other profs getwith their High Damage attacks.
Our other specials are as weak as piss, when it comes to damage, the ammount of time they work for & th success rate, compaired with the other combat profs.
All of our shots,havea hugeammount ofAction drain than the equivilents in other Combat professions.
Other Professions can continue to deal out High Damage, even when they are charged in Melee, whereas we cannot, because of the range & cover restrictions on the only two real damage shots we do have.
And Finally, The ammount of damage we do get from our two main specials, is completely underowered, for the ammount of action they take. And for what it costs us to do these attacks, we should not only get more damage out of them "to equel the damage that any other profession can do in the same time", but we should be getting more Concealed shots out than we are now. Atleast 10 more shots while concealed, to make the ammount of damage equel to that of other professions for the ammount of time it takes us to set up.
By the time i set up a concealed attack, got off my 3 rounds, I have done about 70% less damage than the TKA guy that just ran in & started hitting away at the Bad guy, at th same time i started setting up my Concealed attack.
