"In SWG the Rifleman class is the support class that a modern and yonder day Rifleman were: ranged only fighters.

Dontconfuse them with any other."

A very well written post tacwraith, I see somebody else loves the history channel besides me SWG definatly has no clear view of what the rifleman should be. We don't have any better range than other ranged classes. Also some of our rifles fire very fast, so you could consider them assault rifles and we have AOE attacks also which contradicts what a sniper class should be. I don't want to see them removed BTW.

We are a sorta blah on everything we do until master from what I have heard, not there myself. We don't one shot people either even though we have a whole tree called sniping, unless they have low mind pool.

I will agree with you that we are a pure range class that needs to keep its distance. We definately suffer if we don't.With 90% of the critters being melee in game we find this out very fast. Also we have to kill our prey fast else we die or can no longer fight.

We are a very strange class indeed.

Incorrect. You can hit what you cannot see, if you have a good idea of it's general position and you throw enough ordnance at it. That is how they took out snipers in WWII. Locate the general area and called arillery strikes.

Also, rounds do riccochet off of walls, unlike SWG. You can fire 1000 rounds into a house. Someone inside is very likely to be hit despite not being visible. That is part of the reason "Volume of Fire" is important.

Even further, rounds have parabolic trajectories. You can count on that to hit targets behind cover at extreme ranges. German heavy machine guns were used in this way to rain fire upon positions over a mile away.

Not that this applies in anyway to our abstracted on-line world.

exactly mspo.

That was one of the things during the cold war that split the US and the USSR apart in their warfare doctrines.

US wanted precision.. a helicopter shooting 1 missile to kill 1 tank, a cruise missile to hit a specific building in a city, etc etc.

USSR? Much more simple solution. Shoot thousands of rounds in the general area of the target, one of the has got to hit. Probability is on the side of automatic fire.

'But why is Fantasia dying then?'
'Because people have begun to loose their hopes and forget their dreams. So the nothing grows stronger. It's the emptiness that's left. It's like a despair, destroying this world. And I have been trying to help it.'
'But why?'
'Because people who have no hopes are easy to control. And whoever has control has the power'

I dont think any riflemen will complain at all if we have the most range in SWG. what ?...64m ? so pistol and carbine ? I dont even bother with accuracy here...just like beating on a dead horse :/ psss....ideal range at 50-60m ..blahhh...I can shoot a bow beter than that ...<mumbling...>

I like rifle alots, but this make me sad when everytime we get into this...I dont know if those DEVget hit on the head too manytimeor maybe they have problem in the code themself but for whatever reason, this is not right at all .

Rifles are not a support weapon in SWG.

They are a less powerful and more crippling incarnation of a pistol, plain and simple. The fact that we can even hit an unhealable pool was an accident because they had to remove mind heals in beta. We can expect mind heals to show back up eventually.

They aren't longer range, they aren't more powerful, they aren't more accurate, they don't spray bullets faster, they basically aren't anything that a rifle is supposed to be.

They are long barreled pistols with downsides.

Riflemens can have an insane damage output for a short period of time (due to ham costs)atMAX range.

Thats our role, no one do better that than a master rifleman minus the rocket launcher, but its a charges thing.

When needed, HAM costs can be lowered near to null with spice and food, allowing us to dish insane damage for a bit longer.

The take cover stuff and melee damage peinalty show even more that we are a SUPPORT class, we do the damage while others have fun running around the ennemies, we are Weezards !

Solo, we are not very efficient, add a pet (rifleman/CH : one of the more powerfull character template) or a player .. then we are deadly.

And comparing real life stuff to SwG is pointless.. like it or not, inSWG (STAR WARS GALAXIES, VIDEO GAME )we are a support class, we are the damage dealers.

The main problem is that we dont fit our role AT ALL till at least4 0 3 3 or something in the Rifleman tree, before you get flushing shot 2 and a descent speed,YOU WILL SUCK, so just lvl up a bit.

We are the masters of long range damage, who else can AE for 5-6k damage in PVE and 1K+ in pvp at 64m ? no one but commandos with a rocket launcher, but its expensivebecause of thecharges.

Talking about PVE, want to hear a little story ? I was hunting in dathomir in a group a 10, we were surrunded by nightsisters , we had like 8 on us, everyone was shooting on one specific, then one other sister shot at me, I send my pet (rock beetle!) on it, but since she had shooted on my mind I couldnt use specials, so I just autoattacked.. I had my T21 equiped, just with my autoattack my sister dropped at same time than the other one my group was shooting at. Of course I was shooting for 600 1000 every second with an AP3 weapon on a AR1 10% energy mob , that was like 1500 2000 DPS, just with autoattack.

Speaking about accuracy, I think ours is Ok, of course dont run around and shoot, shoot while standing still, stay aroundyour ideal range and you'll be fine, once you'll get +100 ish accuracy at master, you can even run and gun a bit.

But I'll say it again, you need to have flushing shot 2 and descent rifle speed to start to realise what our damage output is like, then recieve a MAJOR boost when unlocking rfile spec4 and master, allowing to shoot 3 times faster.

Personnal thought : if they ever make AP works in pvp, everybody will scream NERF, because we already kinda rock in pvp in term of damage, I mean killing people30-40% of the times with one shot.. add the AP (damagex1,25x1,25 VS armoredto damagex1,25x1,25x1,25 VS unarmored), and It'll be a near 100%

PS : forgive my broken english .. got hard day.. my brain is jellified.

"Civil War saw a bit more widespread useof rifled 'rifles' but the main weapon was still a smooth-bore gun, a musket."

Way more than a widespread use, the Springfield 1862s and Lee Enfields were rifled if I'm not mistaken.

Also, they started using actual cartridges on some of the sharpshooter rifles, even breach loading. "Mini-balls" with a powder charge and cap were used on the Springfields and Enfields.

Now for another history lesson. We can have the title of Sharpshooter(which is a sniper).

This term comes from the Sharps rifle, there were various models through the 1800's. These rifles were great for providing long range fire and the power to pack a punch. These were the original snipers asmen could lieat long distancesand pick off their targets with an accuracy they had not previously had with a long barreled firearm.

These men that shot you from a great distance with a highly accurate and powerful rifle were called Sharps shooters for the gun in which they shoot, which is how we got the term sharpshooter today.

lol you know nothing of american history. all the enfield and springfield muskets ( the 2 main weaponds used by South and North Repectivly) had rifled barrels, which means groves are cut into the barrel causing the bullet the spin. this rifling is why rifles are called rifles. So the main weapond from the civil war on is the rifle.

Dont forget the Harpers Ferry Rifle, it was as popular as the Springfield and the English made Enfield. It also had a rifled barrel.

Now if I could get on top of a building or a patio and snipe down on others on the ground, that would be something else.
