I wouldn't say all the Prequel weapons looked bad.
The DC-15 Clonetrooper Rifle, first seen in Ep.II looked good. It's freaking big.
The DC-15 Carbine, introduced in Ep.III was decent also. Actually, you saw a Clonetrooper do something cool with his. He ran up to a Droid, jumped on top of it, aimed down, and fired a half a dozen shots into the thing!
Jango Fett's Pistols had an elegant, flashy look but not over the top.
The Pistol Padme used in Ep.I (Republic Blaster) looked something out of a '50s sci-fi show. Not good, IMO.
