Thread: A valid reason why rifles should hit at 80m not 64m
yup... this would be LOVELY... but (there's always a but)
If I'm figuring this correctly, my guess is that the maximum range to targets is 65 (64 whatever) because that is the maximum distance that an AI can search for you. Does that sound right?
If you were sitting at 75m away and started pelting a target... and it could only search for you within 65m... it would effectively NEVER find you no matter how many times you missed etc.
In order for AIs to search that far away... it would require a SIGNIFICANT boost in performance processing.
I bet that's why it's the way it is... sure they could increase the max distance, but the cost of doing so might be too great.
I would like to point out that we can already hit things over 63m. I was shooting at those giant turtle critters at about 70m last night. The accuracy was -50 and none of my special attacks worked (kept getting the "target not in range" msg) but I could use my regular attack. Of course, they charged and sent em packing with warning shot, but the point is that I COULD attack. I discussed it with a groupmember who was also a rifleman and he said we was getting the same results. Admittedly an extra 7m isn't a big deal, particularly against house-sized creatures (which is why we guessed we could hit at that range), but it's something. Just thought I'd mention it.
BTW, the devs aren't going to listen to a bunch of riflemen agreeing that they should get extra range. If you really want them to listen, start this thread on the BH or CH forum and get it up to 5+ pages of agrees.
/agree but doesn't think it will help and is biased because he's a rifleman
One more thought! How about we put the maximum range increase at Master Rifleman? Or get a few extra meters per box while climbing one of the rifleman trees? That might satisfy the naysayers on the other forums (who are already calling for our nerfing, those bastards).
Here is my reasoning as to why a rifle should be able to hit from much further away than 64m. In real life, a skilled shooter with an M-16A2 and a quality scope can fire and strike a target dead on at a range of 1 - 2 miles away. I learned this in Basic training, that one requirment in Sniper school is to strike a moving target from 1/2 mile away.
So, if you consider that we have built rifles that can do this in this in the modern age, and the weapons in the SWG time frame are supposedly far supperior to the weapons of our time, then wouldn't you think that a rifle, especially one with a scope, could fire successfully fire and hit from not only double, but possibly tripple the max distance that SWG allows. I believe that a Master Sniper should recieve the ability to fire on a target from 500m away. Ok, so I know that you cannot target a creature that far away, but there has to be a way that they could do this.

You say that you trained to shoot 300m in the army... and in the future it is said. I doremember it saying a LONG TIME AGO! IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY
A Long time ago from when? Use your imagination, after all, what if that long time ago reference was from the furture of that universe. The stories are considered to be the history of the SW universe, right? Then who is to say that someone hundreds of years after the intergalactic star wars took place was sitting at home or in a class room teaching them to another person. Show a little respect next time.

One note is that in real life, most of the time the enemy does NOT see the long-distance shooter. Of course if it is physically impossible to see him, that's another story.
But my thinking is that if you will never be able to attack from a reasonable distance then just remove the Rifleman class. Let us switch classes without losing XP or refund the money and be done with it.

in army basic training, we practiced shooting at 300 meters until perfection.
it is kinda sad that thousands of years into the future we lose over three times that distance...
oh technology woes...
Actually, just the fact that we're down to practicing at only 300m tells you a lot... Weapons are getting smaller, lighter, and firing lower powered rounds. Long range accuracy will suffer greatly because of these things.
Let's look at the US Marines over the last century as an example...
WW1: Issued weapon is the Springfield m1903. Max Effective Range 900-1100 yds
WW2: Issued Weapon is the M1 Garand. Max Effective Range 700-900 yds
Vietnam (begining): Issued Weapon is the M14. Max Effective Range 500-600 yds
Post Vietnam: Issued Weapon is the M16A1. Max Effective Range 400-500 yds
End of the century: Issued Weapon is the M16A2. Max Effective Range 500-600 yds
Even considering this fact a rifle with a range of 64m is just insane.
Of course there's some debate about the accuracy of these numbers... Generally these numbers represent the range at which the manufacturer says there is a reasonable chance to hit and incapacitate the target. Of course under actual combat conditions many soldiers will have trouble hitting targets at these ranges even though on a range they would score80-90% hits. Because of this fact some sources will list effective ranges of as much as half of what is listed in other sources.

Didnt we use **edit**ed up M16s in Vietnam? Atleast towards the later half.
The bothced versions of the M16, using the military name for it, the M16A1, was used in the begining of Vietnam and jammed quite often do to the residue left from the discharge ammunition. It was also amoungst the last standard issued automatic rifles used in the military. The M16A2 has single and burst (3 shots fired when the trigger is pulled). The M16A2 is considered to be one of the most efficient and reliable field weapons around, next to the revamped AK-74 and the HKMP-5.
However, also consider that you are talking about Auto-Rifles, which would be considered to be the modern day version of a Carbine, not a long range rifle. Sniper rifles that are commonly in use are things like the PSG-1, which has an effective range of nearly 3000m, and the other new one which the name slips my mind. The range on the new one is not as far as the PSG-1, but it fires a 50 caliber round and is known to be able to easily puncture the armored casing of modern day tanks. Then, there is also variable weapon ammunitions that can increase the range of the weapon extensively, and armored piercing rounds and so on. There are many factors that can increase the range of a weapon.
And to think, all this knowledge bout weapons and I never get to touch them, stupid Air Force. ![]()
