You know, everyone talks about those adhesive mesh traps being all that, but as a master rifle/ranger, ive never once found a reason to use the mesh traps. They slow down a charging rancor for about half a second, which isn't even long enough to fully utter a four letter word before the beast runs you down. You want to go with phecnacine darts. Allow me to say that again, it even sounds cool: phecnacine darts. These babies will render your target all but immobile for about 15 seconds. The reaction I get from hunting partners everytime someone sees me stop an ancient bull rancor dead in its tracks and kill it before the effects wear off, you would think I just walked on water. In the time it takes any creature to shrug off the effects of a phecnacine dart, you can hit it with just about every other kind of trap in your arsenal, and the payoff is huge. You can get 10-16k worth of trap xp off of one stupid rancor, before you ever fire a shot.
If you have another ranger with you to teach you as you level up, you can grind out the entire trapping line ofeither scout and ranger in a matter of minutes.
This is more of a ranger question, not a rifle question, but I felt compelled to put in my two cents, anyway.
Good luck camping. That grind more than offsets the ease of the trapping line.
He aint gonna be taking down rancors if he's grinding rifleman. at least not yet.
If he is attacking creatures at his level and not relying on comp/superbuffs, he should do fine with the adhesive mesh. I filled every tool bar and got twoboxes of trapping spitting em at baragasets. Phen is useful if you are using it in actual combat, but in grinding it isnt nearly as useful, since they just slow down, dont actually stop.

I you cant get all your scout xp and trapping xp in a couple hours, you are doing something wrong. Well or you dont have a doc with you. I did, was 0004 scout, 3 1/2 hrs later I was 4440 ranger with MORE than enough hide and bone to grind the tent tree.
You can do the trap xp on one rancor alone with whichever traps they are that give xp over and over, assuming you have enough of them. Empty your inventory except for the essentials and load up with traps. DOc is nice incase things go south for whatever reason.
