As some other people already said, it has been discussed in the past, and this discussion should be postponed till after the CU. No matter how much some people like or dont like it now, it is already scheduled to change with the CU, so why bother discussing an element of the game thats going away? It certainly cant be a constructive discussion.

inthat 30 secs do you think a rifleman should be able to get off as many shots as a pistoleer? note im not asking about game mechanics just curious of opinions on the matter in terms of balance.

I think there is a general error in your question.

It should be can there be balance if they are the same.

And the answer is yes. SWG can not be balanced by making everyone the same. Which means that DPS can not be the same for all the professions. If it is there is no real difference between the professions and the only difference would be the graphic.

We use to have this arguement awhile back. What we need is circular balance. Think rock/paper/scissors. Where different professions have different strengths and weaknesses which can be used/exploited in different situations/circumstances.

There are three main categories for combat. Offense, defense, and combat multipliers (states, DoTs, etc).

Different professions would have different ratings in those three areas. So Rifles would be say high offense, low defense, mid combat multipliers, and low defense. Pistoleers might be high defense, low offense, and mid combat multipliers. Carbineers could be mid offense, high combat multipliers, and low defense.

The trick however is to make those actualy mean something. That means changing MOBs so that they are not all immune to states and have the defenses meaningful also. Something that isn't currently true.

The means some MOBs would have low state defenses but maybe high armor/damage reduction, others may have use lots of state attacks making defense best for taking them down, etc.

As for the general question the answer is yes. SWG is suppose to be based on Star Wars. SW has a rich background and number of source material. All of which state rifles fire just as fast pistols of the same type. A semi auto rifle will fire as fast as a semi auto pistol. We can't ignore canon. If we do we aren't playing SW, but a Sci-Fi game loosely based on it. The T21 is not a sniper rifle, it's a light machine gun that fires at 1shot/sec at its slowest rate. That is official info. The game needs to be designed around such info as much as possible to retain the Star Wars feel of the game.

Yes it's a game. However it's an RPG. And the main focus of RPGs is that they are based on reality to a certain extent. Water is wet, if you jump off a cliff you'll fall (barring intervention of an anti-gravity device or a levitation spell). But basic principles still apply. And ones of those is that rifles fire as fast as their pistol counterparts of the same type.

We just have to design the game around that and canon sources to achieve balance. And because DPS can't be the same a bit of the balance is going to be subjective. Just how much defense for example equals a specific amount of extra damage? How does it equal a certain state effect or DoT? For that we need to do some testing.

im sure it has been talked about before but thats not the point of my question. im curious if the general player wants it to be changed or if its even a problem in their opinion.

I could live with less speed if I had a 150m range so I still hit the melee guys often enough before they get to me.
