I think it has to do with the fact that a rifleman has to stay at long range. In an ideal situation you don't even have to wear armor if you stay at the maximum range of your rifle, because no one can fire at you from 65m (except other riflemen).

Isn't it more logical that melee use the light armor since they need freedom of movement? I just don't get it. Part of me because the recon armor is the old lame stuff, but it seems the guys who have the least defense against attacks due to our positioning should have the strongest armor.
Majority of ranged attacks will be energy-based, so snoger energy defence helps. And strictly speaking, your rifleman has always been a light skirmisher, not a heavy infantry grunt. Light armour (or no armour) is more in keeping with the role historically, which appears to be how the role is being defined in the CU. Far from not needing movement, a true sniper has to be fast, silent and maneuverable. You fire your shot, and you're gone. It's only in the current SWG model that you stand in one spot and unload your heavy machine-gun-esque T21 fire into an enemy that's 50 metres away. If sticking to light armour (or no armour) leaves me better able to crawl swiftly while under cover into a good firing position, get my shots away, and slink off without being detected, that works just fine for me.
We are not snipers, we are gunners.. if you havent notice any rifle we have dont seem to be very accurate, except for the DRX and the LD-1.
We're also not masters at the moment, are we? We'll get more accurate with more skill... In any event, I'm withholding judgement on any of the weapon types as found on the Frogs, since their stats are not locked down. I would point out, though, that while in live we are indeed more like gunners, in CU they have taken away our AOE attacks, so that we now do high-damage attacks to sinlge targets at long range. Hmm - sure sounds like a sniper to me.

"As to armour, the reason I (and others) had in mind that Recon was considered "light", was because of something described in a dev post (or was it the Friday Feature?) about how the different armour types would have different encumbrances... basically, the more protection it offered, the higher the encumbrance.
Hmm... maybe that was actually a reference to the type of armour worn within a given category, i.e. of the various recon armours available, those with higher protection would have higher encumbrance, which may be the same, better or worse than the protection and encumbrance of a battle or assault armour, depending on their stats... in which case you're right - armour should have been defined by its damage protection type, rather than names like Recon, etc.
It will be interesting to see how it shakes out...

You know whats funny... ever played a First Person Shooter?? How many times do you kill 2 players at same time? Almost never, so I still dont see the point of HOW we are SNIPERS if we cant "HIDE", know what I mean? I think ALL of our attacks while in prone or Kneel should not target us automaticly. Ever seen the an NPC targets you after 2 or 3 shots w/o Conceal? BUT only when you're STANDING....
If you do the math *Gunner + Hide = Snipers* but *Gunner + Hide = Snipers* so what do we have left? We are GUNNERS... Just get the point....
and this aint a flame Im just explaining why we are NOT snipers... Even if we cant target multiple targets...

Hi guys,
this baffled me a little bit too, I had just assumed riflemen would get Combat armor and this would give us lots of Stormtroopers running around. It seemed a bit funny to have the heavy hitting assault rifle sorts in recon armor.
But, looking at the stats, it seems to give you the most advantages with the least uncumbrance. Judging by the look of the new weapons, they all seem to have scopes and stocks on them. (Unless the frog is giving out fully kitted weapons with out telling me) The impression I get, is that carbineer is the intended 'assault rifle' style fighter, while riflemen take the roll of fast moving long range snipers. I'll confess, this looked really nice in Battlefront, with scout armored snipers. (Though forgive the FPS reference, it was still a nice look)
Of course, sniper-looking weapons and sniper-style armor won't matter if the profession doesn't have the long range and concealment abilities such a role would require.
