Is it a viable class....sure.
Other things must be taken into consideration when making your charater. If you are first and foremost a rifleman that I would for sure suggest going with another race besides Wookie.
If you are first and foremost a CH...well then I would probably suggest Wookie for you.
If you dont care about being "uber" then play what you want to play!
As for bowcasters being worth it....so far I have yet to find a good bowcaster....but one weapon is NOT a reason to play a race.
I'm a wookiee and like the previous poster I can migrate to pretty good "blue" stats. This is what they are from what I remember (error is about +-25 on the "Red" and "green" stats)
Health: 980
Str: 650 (min)
Const: 500
Action: 960
Quickness: <450
Stamina: 500
Mind: 1000
Focus: ~600
Willpower: ~600
I forget the exact numbers and they're still in the process of migrating to higher mind but that's about where they sit.
Not a terrible class, but not the best either. Make sure you migrate as much to your mind as possible and you'll be competitive.
Bowcasters are a good mid-range weapon that look cool. I used it some on the way up to novice but lasers are better. And the T-21 looks good in the hands of a 7 foot tall wookiee in battle pads.
