Thread: Did You Know This... about slicing?
-- Seem like all you get is Speed slices? It's just bad luck. My first 1000 slices I did were very close to 500-500.
-- The percentage improvementis random and is always between 5% and 35% (15% to 35% if Master)
-- Seem like your Encumberance slices are higher than your Effectiveness slices?
They Are! Effectiveness slices only go up to 35%, Encumberance slices go up to 45%.
-- Effectiveness slices UNDER 20% are much more common than those OVER 30%.
Ouch i feel your terrible pain there man, i am a master rifleman/master weaponsmith. Iput down a whole crate of t21s on my rl friend who happens to be a master smuggler. These rifles are as good as our server can get. 7 spd, 133 to 365 damage(non stocked) and 70 mind cost. Well after getting around 8 12% to 24% damage/speed slices, i was amazed by the luckiness of two 35% damage slices(one was 34.5678, other was 34.89[love this one, hehe]). While it is very annoying to have a crate of guns slice(dont do it, if they are having a bad day, stop em), every once in a while you will get lucky. P.S. never blame your smuggler, and also, remember tip them well, they have your gun, and dont have to give it back to ya if your a punk.

I got a 42% Encumb slice on my chestplate today, didn't think they so so high.
I track all of my slices and have done close to a couple of thousand (armor and weapon combined).
I have observed thefollowing:
-- High encumberance slices (above 40%) are more common than high effectiveness slices (above 30%).
-- The distribution of encumberance slices over all the possible percentages is fairly even across the 30-40% range. However, at 41% and above, they start dropping off fast.
-- Unfortunately, low effectiveness slices are much more common than high effectiveness slices. I see a lot more effectiveness slices under 20% than I do over 30%.

Thanks for the info, Wayne.
One suggestoin, you should add that Personal Shield Generators can also be sliced. Then add a note that, while you can get PSGs sliced, they fall under the same 50/50rule of getting an Encumbrance slice, which, of course, is absolutley useless for a PSG since their encumbrance is 0 already. So that means that there is a 50% chance that the slice will do nothing to improve the PSG at all, and as with everything thing else, the Smuggler has no control over which it will be. On the other hand, there is 50% chance that you can turn a mediocre PSG into something more useful.

As a working stiff and forum contributor, I usually only have time to watch the forums in which I have a vestedinterest. This means that as both a Master Rifleman andMaster Smuggler, I watch those two forums a lot, but no others. It dawned on me that many other Master Rifleman obviously DON'T read the smuggler forum, and so there may be misconceptions. So this thread is just a "Quick Hitter" to tell you things you probably already know about slicing, but hopefully some things you didn't...
Those of you who are masters of OTHER PROFESSIONS might want to add your own "Did You Know...?" threads.
A Quick Overview of Slicing...
Things that can be sliced: Weapons, Armor, Containers, Terminals, some Doors and security pads.
Tools that slicers use: Molecular Clamps, slicing knives, Armor Upgrade Kits (AUKs), Weapon Upgrade Kits (WUKs)
Currently, the QUALITY of these toolsMAKES ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE in the quality of the slice!
Slicing Weapons:
-- The type of slice (speed or damage) is totally random, but overall DOES work out close to 50-50
-- Seem like all you get is Speed slices? It's just bad luck. My first 1000 slices I did were very close to 500-500.
-- The percentage improvementis random and is always between 5% and 35% (15% to 35% if Master)
-- Master Smugglers DO have the possibility of better slicers over a level 4 slicer (by 5%)
-- Slices over 31% are not the norm. Do not expect them. Be thrilledwhen you get them.
Slicing Armor
-- Again, the slices (Encumberance vs. Effectiveness) are 50-50... and random.
-- Seem like your Encumberance slices are higher than your Effectiveness slices?
They Are! Effectiveness slices only go up to 35%, Encumberance slices go up to 45%.
-- Effectiveness slices UNDER 20% are much more common than those OVER 30%.
-- Encumberance slices over 40% are not the norm. Be thrilled when you get them.
Finally: Don't Blame your Slicer for "bad" slices! They don't like them either!!
Slicing tends to be VERY STREAKY. I have days where I'll get80% crappy slices, followed by days where I'll get 80% slices for damage on weapons, etc. But there are definitely streaks. I have gotten 8/9 or 9/9 encumberance slices on suits of armor at leastfour times, and maybe the same with Effectiveness slices. Worse, I recently spent a small fortune on a crate of 25 VERY NICE laser rifles, and got 22 CRAPPY SLICES on them. The highest damage slice was 30%, and 18 of them were for Speed.
I strongly agree.. allot of people have no clue about other classes, they seem to ask allot of stupid questions... anyway... I can verify that all of this is correct... I have an alt that is a master smuggler and have published a how to guide on some fan sites...
I would like to add that there are allot of smugglers that try to tell ya that they are using good tools or ect... this is a misconseption that it offers a better slice... smuggler tools and spices do not offer better results from better materials... this is a fact that many devs have said.. and many smugglers have proven! this is JUST FYI!
Wayne,
Is it also true that an effectiveness slice does not affect the Special Protections? I believe I noticed that with regard to some armor that got an effectiveness slice. The effectiveness stats went up, but the special protections remained the same. Or am I just hallucinating from too much muon gold?

So in that sense, yes, an effectiveness slice would cause the item to "decay" faster than a non-sliced (or an encumbrance sliced) piecesimply because the damage that would be going to you is going to your armor or PSG, chipping away at its condition.

Hey Wayne,
Good post. I havetwo questions regarding the mysterious slicing phenomena.
Does slicing cause weapons to lose condition faster?
Does slicing armor/psg's cause them to lose condition faster?
Thanks
Good question, UWSkeletor...
Unfortunately I don't know the answer. I suspect that what LLJK_Griz said is true, that it doesnt. I have carried sliced weapons since I was a fledgling marksman and some of my rifles have lasted a LONG, LONG time. I think you're bigger concerns are power-ups and shots like Overcharge shot. I've never seen any tests run to answer that.
Funny story... I met a newb a while back, met him on his first day. We became hunting buddies and I taught him a lot about being a rifleman. The one thing I forgot to teach him was how bad Overcharge shot was for your weapon.
One day he says "Hey do you have a weapon repair kit on you?"
I replied "Sure do." and he proceeded to trade me his pride and joy T21.
I took one look at it and my jaw dropped: Condition = 0.
I asked him, "Ummm... do you by any chance use Overcharge shot all the time?"
Of course, he replied "Yes... it's really good."
When I told him his beloved T21 was now useless and explained about the condition, he was very depressed.
Fortunately I have a stash of rifles, including several T21s that were better than his.
We ran by the house and I gave him one as a gift forthe promise that never would an Overcharge shot leave it's barrel. ![]()

True. This is why it's so hard to get high stun protection - using a layer moves that damage type into special protection where it isn't improved by slices.

So always feel free to jump in, Sotaudi. I never claimed to know everything ... if I did I would be a millionaire Jedi!
