So last night I am waiting in Coronet starport and when there was about two minutes left someone turns and bows to me. The conversation went pretty much like this.
"Hello can you make me a schematic"
"Hi. What do you want it for?"
"Tailoring"
"Well what component...synthetic cloth, fiberplast panels or reinforced fiber panels?"
"No tailoring"
"So not one of of the those?"
"No for clothing"
"Oh so an actual clothing schematic?"
< of course at this point I am intruiged...what non-tailor ever asks for a clothing schematic? >
"Yes cartridge belt"
< ah a grinder. I assume he wants to let a factory churn out cartridge belts for puny XP>
"Well XP off a factory is minimal. You are better off grinding ribbed shirts to cartridge belts or to casual 3 and then doingcloaks"
"What do you mean? Can I have the schematic?"
"Well you have to get to the skill that alows you to make the belt"
"Can't you just give me the schematic?"
"Well it doesn't quite work like that. I can't just give it to you and then you can just make it. You need to qualify for the skill that lets you make them"
"Oh ok. Thanks...."
Poor guy didn't know but I never thought anyone assumed it worked like that. Would be nice getting novice tailor and then someone just giving you all the master schematics.

And you didn't tell me? That would have made my night! Instead I ended up sitting through a guild meeting.

Actually, I think way backat launch it used to give you crafting xp for factory runs (this was before I became a tailor but I remember others talking about it) so this may have worked back then. And I suppose even now he would get some xp for "free" assuming he sold or gave away those belts. I guess your assumption was in this conversation that what he really wanted was tailoring xp, but if all he actually wanted were the belts, then there's no reason why he couldn't have gotten the schematic from you and made them (of course he didn't sound like the sort of fellow who had his act together and would have the materials needed on hand either, and perhaps not even a factory, hehe).
It's kind of funny now, being a master tailor, and thinking back at all those belts I destroyed "grinding", because those belts are actually good sellers and fetch a pretty hefty price.

True.. but I just figured out what the silly person was thinking.... He was thinking that schematics were *unlimited*, not limited to 100 or 1000 or whatever. So he figured after receiving that Cartridge Belt schematic, it'd just be in his datapad forevermore, and his grinding would be that much simpler.
On factory XP, yeah, for a while at the beginning, factory XP was 100% of regular XP. Thus, the first Master Tailors around were generally people who exploited the hell out of that as quickly as possible. Then they changed it to something like 10% of regular XP, which with the factory-required Synth Cloth and RFP schematics, gave tailoring a particularly horrid XP rate (which we still have today), where the higher level the item, the less XP you get.
I guess nobody cares anymore, since the devs have pretty much stopped even pretending to have a crafting system that caters to anybody other than powergrinders, but it was a huge pain in the ass for me as I trudged through the tailoring boxes at a snail's pace as an "honest tailor."

Me too, as I was an honest tailor. I spend months working up slowly, never grinding until the last few boxes of Field Wear (Boy did I pick the wrong last tree to go up for speed...)

I remember nights sitting next to the factory (out in the middle of nowhere because I hadn't bought a house yet) making items while the factory spit out SynthCloth. Even had a macro for when people running missions would wander by. Sure, it was just /yell "Hey, keep it down, I'm trying to grind!" but I got a few laughs out of it. And the occasional death threat.

I did at some point extract from him that he needed to grind out tailor really quickly so it was all about the XP.
Yeah factories used to apparently grant full XP when you were near them many moons ago. I believe they still give a measly amount.
I was a cloak grinder and I wince at all the cloaks and nearing 100k of hide I used up.

I know I've made schematics before for smiths that have no tailoring skills...Maybe I'm just confused?

Two nites ago while out krayting i was clearing the spawns in the area using strafe2 in vain hopes a krayt would appear attracted by the rancid meat of the corpses littering the canyon. kinda like chumming for fish. anyway i came across a couple of guys witht he same thought in mind but were having quite a time with a pair of ronto.
this made me pause and wonder how they were going to handle a krayt when they were getting severely trashed by a ronto... anyway they were yelling at each other to finish the ronto off and madly healing each other. so step up to about 60ish meters and let a strafe2 fly in the direction of the rontos dropping both. they then got into an argument about why one of them, until then, hadnt been using the 4k damage a hit weapon. they never acknowledged my presence and i just sat back and watched them argue.
i hope i didnt bust up a romance....

ranks right up there with one of my recent experiences.. seeing two noobish looking guys on dathomir . Guy number 1 asks me where the nightsisters are, 'cause he heard they drop good stuff. As i'm answering that question (somewhat guardedly, i'll admit), Guy 2 (holding a laser rifle) asks me what kind of gun I'm using. In mild disbelief, I inform him that it's a T21. His response? "that's what i thought.. i can't wait til i can use one of those. you get the cert in novice rifleman, right?"
nightsister hunting.... suuuuuuure.
