For me its been since the 29th of July and I am still yet to master it (had to take a detour into merchant for my WS business and sp were at a premium). The patch I reckon was the one that dropped the 2.5x dmg multiplier against us after that things started to look rosy for us and Rifle's were no longer a "I am holding one and wandering whichchunker/paralope is going to kill me first" profession, I mean the only really borked bits of rifleman are the concealment line with take cover and suprise shot etc everything else works from what I can see and works well (specials etc) so the only other problems we had were warping and insane dmg multipliers that made our lives nigh on impossible all of which are thankfully absent. We get an amazing range of dmg types (even tho there are a few weapons that got changed along the way ).

Of course the real craze probably started not long after composite became evening wear not just combat armour and ppl needed a way to negate it and someone cottoned onto a certain AR2 weapon that deals stun dmg, which does not directly correspond to a particular patch IMHO we basicly got our profession fixed to the point there is little wrong with it (wrt to other profession like pistoleer) and someone realised we had abilities that were worthwhile in PvP and were no longer impossiblyhard to get.

Hehe I picked riflemen because I was making a Wookiee WS and figured it would be good to play to my strengths (ie the bowcaster) how wrong I was but I liked Rifles anyway and ahve stuck with it thru thick and thin.

I started down the rifle path on 06-27-03(I just like big guns, OK damit!!!!!!! Is that a problem?????). I believe the Publish that turned us into FOTM was the one where they removed 2.5 melee damage though........ It was around that time when they nerfed CH pets to hell and people needed to get armor because pets became useless in PVP(Pets were always useless verse us, thank you Strafe Shot 2)

I really don't think a patch did it, unlike the flood to Commando right after their fix and flamesingle2 became the "I WIN" move. Whereas people once fought unbuffed and unarmored, now you're a nimrod to not have either or both, so people have gradually steered towards the profession with the best tools to defeat armor, Rifleman.

Oh, I started in January, forsaking my beloved Pikeman profession after I just couldn't stand being clobbered mercilessly by anything and everything. Other than Pikeman, Rifle was the only profession that really intrigued me, so here I am.

I think it was around Dec.

There were a couple of factors. One was the removeal of the 2.5X melee penalty. The other was the fix for creature warping. Those two issues combined were the bane of the riflemans existance. Also don't forget the increase in defenses and accuracy mods to Rifleman (along with most of the other combat professions).

Other factors were the CH nerf that drove large numbers of people from that profession. Naturally some settled into Rifleman. Also the advent of armor helped. With everyone getting high end armor. There were a couple of effective ways with dealing with this armor. One was Commandos with a flamethrower. Though this just caused large number of wounds and the Commando stood a fair chance of dying prior to the flames taking out the target. Another was Combat Medics since they cause wonds and ignore amor and defenses. The other was the Jawa Rifle which did stun damage which most armor is weak against.

Another factor was probably the fix to ConcealShot.

Defense stacking (prior to the limitations put in) also made it a favorable profession to take.

All these factors have contributed. But basically Rifleman was one of the few professions that was mostly working and working well, and has been for awhile.

Rifleman is popular now? Wow. Forgive my ignorance...I'm more or less visiting from the tailor boards and haven't kept up with the changes....but I have aspired to be a Master Rifleman and Master Tailor from a week after release. My character concept was to be a rebel sniper and run around with that tag even as a master rifleman. My friends all told me back in the day that Rifleman was not a good profession and that I would get owned if I PvP'd, but I was adamant then and am adamant now that Rifleman is the combat prof for me. Well, I don't really have much interest in PvP...accept when TEF'ed. Well, I got to rifle 4 and have only fought occaisionally since, mostly focusing on tailoring business. Plus a little of the hologrind, but always I knew I would continue the climb towards Rifleman, and once again my journey up the ladder continues. So even though I have yet to earn the title, I like to think I have been a rifleman from the beginning.

Waste basically hit it on the head with everything he said.

One factor though is word of mouth. I could make you guys a nice long list of all the people I've fought...then seen them swap to Rifleman out of jealousy of my damage dealing ability. December was about when the craze started, on Tarq at least. I remember buzzing up prolly the servers top weaponsmith in mid december asking for the stats on his JIR.

He had never even made one at that point.

I go to his vendor now, and he has more JIR's than FWG5s and scatters stocked.

Like the Pheonix, he shall rise from the fire
And be born a new.

Flames will rain down upon all that oppose him
And when the embers cool

I picked up rifleman as my primary combat class is Swordsman. Swordsman and Rifleman go hand in hand as both hit he mind pools with their specials. After getting concealed shot 1 I realized how cool rifleman really is. Sure its alot slower then say pistoleer or carbineer however the enemies never attack me as they have no clue where the shots are coming from.

As for PVP...well I have no strats for that so I prefer to stay away from it and just focus on PVE. Maybe once I master Rifleman then I will have to give PVP a try.

Oh and incase you are wondering...I am talking about my other character, not Ochid who is a master chef and expert BioEngineer.

My guess would be with the comming of buffs and the ideal that eye shot for bounty hunters rocked. Then it was realized that riflemen get mind shots also. While someone could buff all stats but mind ( this was before dancers could ) this would be the stat to hit. Even with dancer buffs, the mind is the weak link. only CMs can fix mind and they are to busy poisioning minds to really fix any. So even with the 75% mode to PvP. Mind hitting ( someones 500 - 700 mind , heath and action were more important before buffs ) with 2k will screw you up much better then the other players HAM that can be healed and were generally stronger. Only mostly non-combat types had high minds ( docs or artians). It was just the grind was soooo long , when the baddies saw you , you had to switch to a diffent weapon ( pistol or melee ) .

With the advance of armor, and the removing of the 2.5 melee modifier that caused a bug making rifleman very hard to hit caused alot of people to pick it up.

I would say with the arrival of 80+ composite armour serious pvpers picked up the rilfeman for the jawa rifle and its stun damage.
