Thread: Can a Rifleman be an effective tank with the right template?

I'm looking to dabble in melee defenses (def. vs mods, melee/ranged defense, block) would that help or do I have to be holding a melee weapon to be a tank?
you can be a tank with the right professions stacked but you will never be as effective as a tank that a pure meleer would be.

specifically... as long as you're holding a rifle, you don't get the 'toughness' skill that makes a tank tankish. as a TKA/brawler/rifle, you could tank OR deal damage, but not at the same time (since TKA's "unarmed toughness", which is a direct % reduction in incoming melee damage, only operates when you're unarmed).
dodge/block/counter aren't as effective as you might imagine, and melee/ranged defense becomes a minor factor for endgame content.
what you're looking for... 'tank(ing) elders and krayts' is something that REQUIRES the 'toughness' skill.
also of note: when you're holding a rifle, you're easier to hit in melee... 2.5x easier, if the code is working. no matter what your defenses look like, you're hosed when that comes into the calculations.
know your role. if you want to tank, tank. if you pick up a rifle, get ready to back up a bit and deal damage from range... preferably behind a tank.

toughness, toughness, toughness.
and the 2.5x 'to hit' bonus for melee attacks against you when you're using a rifle.

Rifleman, it appears, have ahidden-40 melee defense mod(the aforemention 2.5xto be hit mod that the devs told us about) . If you have a rifle equip you take 40 of your melee defence right of the top, of course if you unequip the weapon your melee defense gets the +40melee defence added to what evermelee defence you get from a brawler profession while using the brawler weapons.. You also move 5% slower (according to some tests (I am not sure about this)) if you have a rifle equiped. Also for being the best tank you can be you would want to have pikeman as it is the only profession who's secondary defence stacks with rifleman.

thanks for your help guys but just to clearify, is the 2.5x reduction = -40 melee defense or are they two different things?
seems to be the case that they are the same thing. They never told us how it was implemented but testing suggests it is the same a -40 melee defence reduction (the removal of all melee defence mods we have)
