Thread: Ranger and medic

This is sort of related to template but mostly I'm just curious. How much medic do you all have if any? If you have some are you already or planning on going Master Ranger and a Master combat proff? Oh and do you hunt unbuffed/armored? The reason for this is I'm still trying to decide how much of Ranger I can "afford" to do. I have to master Rifles for the speed and I'm planning on doing my hunting unbuffed and unarmored most/all of the time. With that in mind I figured I'd maybe need a good chunk of medic to heal myself during fighting if something runs up on me. So I was going to do Ranger 4/4/4/0 and put the rest into medic but especially with the new harvesting bonus at Master I'd still really like to end up all the way.

From what I have heard from master riflemen here you shouldnt really be taking that much damage. You just go prone at near ideal range and mostly use conceal shot whith cammo/mask scent on. Others seem to use headshot3 and can usually kill the mob before it detects you.

I would say go master rifleman/master ranger and novice medic for healing in the hairy scary moments and for wound healing. The trapping can be very helpful if you get in a tight situation so if you are going to dabble I would suggest the trapping line instead of the extra camps simply because the camp is good for recovering after combat, traps will make sure you are able to recover later rather than end up in the cloner.

I dont have any medic. Never really felt a need for it when Ive had Tera Kasi. But I do keep a fully loaded stim pack a launcher bot for healing me up either doing battle or in the camp afterwards

For me I find that using a tank does help in keeping things simpler, ie. less damage taken. I only keep Novice medic and if I have the points to spare I'll put them in healing speed or med effectiveness.

Novice.

And unless I am going to beat on some really bad NPCs, I don't buff or armor.

Camps are nice, but a stim B is great.

I use a pet to tank and/or just drop the beasties before they get anywhere near me.. if I come back from 2-3 hours hunting with more than 5 BF something has gone very wrong!

I threw away my medicfor FS crap....

For a very long time, I regretted that decision as it made me dependent on buffs.... So, a couple of days ago, I threw away my FS crap and went back to medic 1/0/0/0.

The FS crap wasn't at all that crappy, however... being able to heal myself is a much better alternative (I need more SP, rofl !)

I'm still not sure I understand the anti-buffing logic.

My problem with hunting unbuffed as a Master Rifle is that using the specials self-damages. I'm more likely to die from self-inflicted ham costs then a creature blow.

If you were hunting on a 10 cpu contract, which should be the absolutly lowest price any ranger should charge ever, really 15-25cpu should be the min. An average creature gives lets say 100 units. You have to kill 10-20 creatures to pay for the buff. This is maybe one nest worth.

And with a buff, you can spam StrafeShot2 all day and melt any but the 100+ level creatures before they can endager you.

Your specials wont kill you if you take the armor off and use a laser rifle with lower ham costs then the Stocked/Scoped T21 im guessing your using.

The reason we are anti-buff is simply that some of us have been here since day 1 (or in beta before it) and want a challange. Plus its nice to not be attached to a timer and not waiting in line.

Just a different style of play

Its nothing to do with the cost of the buff (not for me anyway), it's the challenge. You summed it up in 1 sentence right there, buff and comp = go to lair, hit same button, go to next lair... I think most of us that don't buff do it to make things interesting. And for the "Wow, no WAY!" when you tell people you've killed Black Sun Assasins and Juvey Krayts without a buff or armour (those are my 2 proudest achievements thus far). Also a word of advice, and this is just my opinion atm.. the day the CU hits and armour is no longer everything proof (bar LS) and buffs no longer make you into Superman's cousin, the unbuffers amongst us will be out there business as usual while everyone else cowers in their guildhalls with all the jedi.

At least that is my deep deep desire for the CU.. to make people think to win again.

Hi - I think most of us do it for the challenge -- just like single-player games become very dull after you type in the cheat codes, pve combat becomes very dull once you get buffs. Yes - you can get buffs and spam specials all night (well, for 3 hours at least), but there's not much challenge to doing that. But if you hunt unbuffed, then every kill becomes a sort of challenge -- for example, do I use specials on this mob (which will cost me ham and leave me more vulnerable and less able to kill future mobs) or do I just use my auto-fire attack, which costs less specials but might mean that the creature will be wrapped around my ankle after four shots, which could hinder my ability to take down future mobs.

Yes- if I'm trying to harvest as much as possible in as little time as possible, then you'll find me fully buffed, but if I'm just kicking around and exploring, then I usually try to forgo the buffs, even on the adventure planets. Of course, I'm blessed with a really low ham and relatively decent damage looted acid rifle right now, so that makes going without buffs all the more easier.

I don't mean to be the voice of the one button Superman model, I'm just trying to understand where you guys are coming from.

I don't think you have to worry about me cowering when the CU comes. I'm no stranger to killing things without buffs. Living on a remote corner of Lok means that I frequently encouter some dangerous creature hanging out around my harvesters, with nothing but food, drink and spice to help me out. I, like most of you, think the CU can't come fast enough and I'm hopefull for what it will bring.
