well...made master ranger 2 nights ago...i love teh profession but i realize i attained it for the wrong reason...i like to solo hunt so i thought master ranger would be ideal...but now i realize master only really benefits leading large hunting groups...it seems pointless to put up a HTFB for just myself...i dont use camo kits cause i would rather things attack me...i love trapping but i dont even use the ranger traps....phen dart, adhesive mesh, and glowwire are my staples...crawling fast is nice i have to admit....and iwill never give up tracking...currently i am the following:

master ranger

novice medic 0.0.0.0

BH 0.0.0.3

ive changed my character a lot and now i am considering another change...i believe the best alaround solo character for me would be the following:

ranger 0,0,4,0

CH 4.4.0.0

BH 0.0.2.3

novice medic 0.0.0.0

whata guys think........i have also considered making a ranger/ch/rifleman/pisltoleer.....but the flaw in that is that rifleman and pistoleer target different pools...ideally i would like to hit someone from a distance then when they close in whip out the pistol and finsih em off...but teh decision to make them target different pools is kinda dumb to me...but anyway im not here to complain about the game just to maybe get some guidance from my fello rangers...please post here what combos u have decided to go with...please include ur entire setup including if u use a CH or Non CH pet or droid....specifics are encouraged....thanks everyone

nice camps to heal people faster

and to track down krayts OR another species to harvest and sell the goods

i think it needs more os some stuff to help people solo better or make more useful traps as you say

i know what you mean about the htfb. i use 'simple camp kit' now heh. it's far less wasteful, and i don't hve to keep one stocked, as it takes 3 seconds to craft

i've come to the conclusion that soe likes to make things that look pretty, but don't really work. i'm not going to give up ranger, though. worked for 2 months to have master ranger, and while i'm not disappointed with it, i do feel that it's lacking to some degree. hopefully that will be changed sooner or later, but if it's isn't, it won't make any difference to me in terms of my character build i consider my char to have 110 skill points, not 250, if ya know what i mean (^_^)

as far as what other character build's i'd have if i wasn't a ranger...well, i would think about mastering brawler and picking up the defensive skill tree of pike, sword, and fencer to flesh out my tk's defenses. in your case you can do a similar thing by picking up the defensive trees of carbine pistol and rifle. not really sure what you want to do about combat, but i urge you to pick a combat class that you have enough points to master. i tried being a bh with a little llc skill (all i could afford and keep mranger was llc1) and while it was cool to have this big gun and do all this damage, it was boring to have no special moves. plus, imissed alot and that's just plain frustratin'

the other thing is, if you are serious about giving up ranger, why even keep tracking? tracking is very very ineffective out in the deep wilderness, because someone has to physically be in the area to spawn npc's and wildlife. for example, you do /areatrack and nothing comes up, but walk 10 meters in a certain direction, and all of a sudden there's 4 different spawns in the area. i'm exaggerating the ineffectiveness here a little, of course it's still effective as far as about 2-3km outside of town. once you get outside of 'mission spawn range' though, it's goes disturbingly quiet.

I love being a Ranger and the class is only going to get better New traps new camps and another type of tracking.

I use the Field Base camp as my default camp. It heals wounds much faster and has a larger area, but if you are solo or just pulling pets out there is not a big reason to use it. Remember Ranger is not a combat profession; it is a Combat support profession. After the publish from TC goes live then Maskscent/camo will be alot better. Not much of a change if you are solo but I can camo all my group and we can get areound much better.

I know this is a ramble but as I said earlier I LOVE being a Ranger.

After the disappointment of Master Ranger, mesa became Gunfighter / BH.

Master Gunfighter

BH Pistol 4

Ranger 0/0/1/0

I don't get as much meat as a master ranger, but I can still track animals and get some harvesting bonus. Also, the amount of damage I can put out with my ranged skills makes up for the reduction in harvests, because I can kill things more effectively. Evenwith traps there are animals that simply need accurate firepower toput down. Also my pistol is freaking overkill for almost 70% of the animals on the normal planets, so master marksman gives me a challenge. Try to take outmountain squills with master marksman rifle. Freaking hard! At least that puts some challenge back into the game.

And, I get to play with about 15 different weapons so hunting isn't boring.

I was a long time Master Ranger and a staunch advocate of role-playing the class. But, like all things reality sets in and decisions have to be made.

I gave up my "master-hood" in favour of a more fun, well rounded character.

At present I'm:

Ranger = 4-4-4-2

Pistoleer = 0-1-4-1

Medic = 0-0-0-2

CH = 2-2-0-1

I will be eating into my Ranger skills more as my skill in Creature Handling grows stronger.

I will deplete the traps line first and then see from there.

I eventually want my CH skills to be: 3-3-1-3

So, what ever it takes to get there. I wont eat into my Pistoleer skills, so the demise of my Ranger skills is assured.

I can say this though. For all of the negative press CH gets, It's been the best decision I've made yet. I'm having a blast exploring the planets looking for new, and interesting babies to tame.

Good Luck all.

I reached Master Ranger Friday night. I had doubts going master to begin with. If they don't add stuff to Ranger soon... I will have to drop it for more Pistoleer and CH skills.

CHlevel of 4/4/0/0 is worthless. You won't be able to use level 50 pets, even though you will be able to tame them, and you may not even be able to use level 45 pets, due to ferocity/yadda-yadda considerations that we have yet to figure out And there are only 2 level 45 pets, anyway, I think - the Gnarled Rancor and Toxic Merek Battlelord.

I wouldn't go higher than 3/3/0/0 if you just want to dabble. You can get a Graul Mauler and almost any Merek outat this level. SOE needs to find ways to reward players for taking CH to higher levels... but until then, 3/3/0/0 will let you use - and do - 95% of all CH functions (transfer being the one noteworthy exception). CH is pretty broken, don't be fooled - the CH tree, as it relates to available pets, is FUBAR. The massive investment required to move up from a Graul Mauler or Delirious Merek Avenger to a Rancor or Gurreck is a whopping 18 points - 3/3/0/0to 4/4/0/4 isn't worth the extra skill points - and having an extra pet out isn't very impressive when your total CL level is 50 (2 GWs or 2 GSPs is commonly seen).

Anyway, Tracking is the Ranger's best stree, while Camo Kits are broken and don't work for beans (hopefully effectiveness is upped in the patch ahead, but I don't think Camo Kit Effectiveness has been explicitly addressed in it).

Master CH/Ranger is boring, boring, boring. If all you want to do is run around and tame pets, it works. But fights take half an hour, and you will NOT be able to pvp... so if that's something you want to try, forget it. I got tired of running around taming the same 5 pets as everybody else (and a variety of wierd ones, just so I was different, but higher level variety is awful), so I'm seriously debating abandoning CH altogether.A good Commando can annihilate any CH pet, and an AT-ST will annihilate any group without a Commando... noticing a pattern here? Creature Handler is, in a nutshell, a Tank Providing profession. Ranger is 100% passive, and CH is nearly 100% defense (where I hang out on higher-level planets, anyway). The two are just a really tough combo to pull off, when each is at a Master Level. You can do it, sure, but you will have serious drawbacks, as any Master CH/Master Ranger will admit.

Ranger has some amazing potential, and we have seen the first parts of it, but right now it's still sorely needing ~J

This is starting to become a trend. Players (including me)become so focused on getting the title of Master Ranger that they fail to step back and see the utter weakness of the entire profession. But by the point you've realized what a waste of 63 skill points it is, it's too late to turn back -- you've come too far to call it quits just before the goal line. And surely, they won't leave it completely crippled forever, right?

So you get your Master Ranger title and immediately start looking around for a profession worth pursuing. Then the weeks roll by and there are still no improvements to speak of, and the ones you get don't work and the ones that work aren't worth using.

I only wish I had taken a hard look at this profession before I dedicated myself to pursuing it. I urge all up and coming rangers to heed my advice now: Find some other profession worth pursuing and come back to this one in 9 months when they've finally made it worthwhile.

Just solo'd my first Rancor using Scout traps and thought 'why the heck am I clinging to Ranger?.' Went to Eisley and dumped the rest of Ranger when I could get more BH weapon blocks. This sucks and I'd love Ranger to be viable, but, oh well, that's why my Scout, trap and Survival XP is always maxed, in case it turns out good.
