Hi, I'm slowly working my way up the ranger tree, and loving it. When people ask me why I am going ranger (no respect heh) I tell them that when I started I trained in all the classes, and after a while, I noticed that I was making the most xp into scout, as I enjoyed those activities the most. Now, I'm going on to ranger, and I think I've come up with a good template.

Master Ranger

Rifleman 4-0-0-0

CH 1-1-0-0

Medic 4-0-4-0

This will allow me to be a Ranger, use a pet, and heal myself. My question is, is only having 4-0-0-0 in Rifle adequate to hunt? Will I need a melee weapon to go along with rifle? I've used sword and enjoy it, but not sure if it's worth the skill credits to go with both range and melee. Is medic worth it? I'm doing this on the advice of a friend who says I need to be able to heal myself.

Any suggestions on this template? Thanks

my old template was going to be master ranger/master swordsmen/ CH 1-1-0-0 i gave up Ch because i noticed it was useless now to be a ch UNLESS you planned on going further into the CH tree..i had a dewback and razorback pig i couldnt use anymore whom i had hoped to keep using but now i just use a small cl 13 pet and im fine. I would suggest taking away all ch for more medic or more rifle..but thats just me

You might be able to drop down to first aid 2 and do alright. I use 2, and with a well built stim b, I do just fine healing myself. Also, don't be afraid to drop the chemistry line and just buy your stims. It's good for the economy and you can get better built stims than you're likely to make.

Sadly, for myself I'm going master pistol/ranger and with the ranged skill line, I will have no room for medic at all. It'll be a tough adjustment, but I'll get over it. (unless I decide to change it up some hehe)

Argh.. (wished for an edit button)

Ok.. looked back on your tree and see you have 4 in Pharm and not chem. I'm not sure why you have this either. I'd drop that too if you're tight for points.

I'm a Master Ranger, Novice Rifleman/CH myself and I think I finally have all my skill points where I want them. Suggestions, as a rifleman and only a rifleman you take a 2.5 or 3times penalty on melee damage, point being you dont want to get hit, ever. As, it is now I usually don't get touched by anything because I know it'll end with me on my back, having medic to heal your pets is great but you wont find you have to heal yourself a ton since your main goal will usually be to keep things away from you at all costs. For CH if you're going to get Tame and Train 1 you probably will want to get Emp 1, otherwise the only way you can heal your pet's mind is to sit and wait unless you use petstims (thereby negating your med skills again). For the rifle skills, I have 2/1/0/1 in my rifleman trees. That gives me headshot3, mind2, conceal shot, flurry shot and some extra speed on my firing. Getting the extra two sniper boxes might be nice but I cant speak on how useful the extra skill shots would be. Right now I have the above rifle skills and 2/2/2/2 in CH and with Master Ranger/Scout and marksman at 4/0/0/4 I'm maxed out with 0 skill points available. Maybe someday down the road I'll move some points between rifle and CH but I'm pretty happy with what I have to work with right now.

I appreciate your replies, do you think that 4-0-0-0 in rifle is adequate to play this game even in extreme areas?

If you are fighting non social mobs then yes - bleeds/headshots will work fine. rifleman gets 4 different AE shots for fighting groups of mobs, but for the most part- you will be fine with the 4-0-0-0.

for myself, i am planning on Master Rifleman, Master Ranger, then in Marksman (4-0-0-4), although i may drop the ranged weapon support and pick up novice medic to use stims, but ive made it this far without it.

just have fun. enjoy the game. can always change your mind and try different things out.

I'm also a Rifleman. I found it inadiquate alone, so I (eventually) added 2-handed sword. That may be a better way to go with a good sword and rifle. This could work with Carbineer or Pistoleer as well, as long as the melee matched (Pole arm, 1-handed, respective)but the Rifleman really does need a melee alternative because you even die to bunnies if you hold that rifle too long. Some medic, even w/o any other tree in it filled, would be good to have (buy StimBs)

The big stuff can be taken with:

/mindShot1;/mindShot2
/headShot2 (or 3 if you can have enough mind left... be VERY careful of that)
Repeate HS till the mob moves
Follow up with /melee2hheadhit1 or 2 from the 2-handed and stim if needed

In more general terms:

  • Start a bleed. Most seem to be stackable from different levels

  • Hit on that part of HAM till the mob moves on you

  • Finish with a melee hit that targets the same place on HAM

    • Use of stims are very inmportent on truely powerful mobs at this point.

Your only problem is if the mob imparts a status to you that is dehabilitating or truely ungodly hi HAM... or their friends help. /maskScent may be of aid in that, I have noticed less response in social animal when that succeeds. What I'd like to know is how much of an improvementin thisa hunting blind will have.

Uhhh.. you're a ranger. Use your skills. Here's my typical routine:

1) Max range Healthshot
2) Chestshots until it gets approx 45m.
3) Supression fire
4) Phen Dart
5) Chestshots
6) DEAD

I can solo (no pets) two white-yellow mobs at a time using supression fire and phen darts on them. The micro managing takes some practice. Perhaps its different because I'm using a pistol but even for rifleman, you can supression fire/trap it and move back into optimal range.

I hunt cats. They move to fast for that. You can get the P-Dart snuck in sometimes but usually they are on top of you in 2 seconds and I don't have a rifle that fast. Also: you have to remember to be ready if they are assistive. If I was a pistoleer, like you, I can see it.

a warning! rifleman + pets = bad combo. i actually just dropped all my rifleman skills because pets almost never do mind damage. i have the 4 boxes of pistol in marksman and kill hard mobs quicker than i did with a few boxes in rifleman. that said, the pistol or carbine line might be better suited for you.

Also because when using pets, you need to heal them when fighting hard stuff (aka your medic skills). Rifleman is poorly suited to pull this off because your range is ~45m and your pet is way up there in melee. pistols (especially) and carbines generally have much tighter optimum ranges thus allowing you to better keep your pet alive during the fight.

Also, pets are finicky. if you fight multiple targets, pets have a great habit of changing targets and such and invariably one of them aggros YOU not your pet. with a rifle, this is bad. REALLY bad. if it gets to you and gets 2/3 hits in, you're generally toast. and its also very hard (impossible) to make your pet change targets once combat has started. Again, this is advantage pistol/carbine as they dont suffer extreme damage penalties OR extreme to hit penalties.

However, you're set-up will work well. if you buy some good stims then your ability to heal will keep you and your pet alive through MUCH more difficult fights than otherwise. i would simply suggest pistol/carbine over rifle because they mesh with pets significantly better
