Thread: This bothered me...

Saw another new Master Ranger the other day. New in that his "birthday" was recent, said so in his bio.

Already a Master. I applaud his hard work, takes some playing to get to Master, and it as obvious he wanted to be a Ranger as he only had mastered Scout and a combat profession with Ranger. That was fine.

What bothered me was 5 badges. 3 for professions and 2 exploration badges. That is sad, truly sad. And one badge was for a place you can shuttle into.

That said to me that individual had not been anywhere, done anything, and more than likely knew little except for his home town area.

I was correct. He asked me several questions about where we were, to include what he should hunt for wooley. As we were on Talus, after I stopped laffing, I told him.

It is sort of sad that anyone can Master Ranger without leaving a starter city. How many camps used to be right outside Theed? How many people just run around harvesting nunas, or gnorts, or butterflies, or paralopesand make Master Scout? Scarey huh??

I wish there was a system in place that in order to master any profession, there was a quest type system at the end. For artisans, it would be to collect certain materials from all the planets, or to make one of each type of thing they make. For us, to harvest certain items from different places. For the combat types, kill certain types of NPCs/animals, spread all over the galaxy.

I realize that with the coming patch, there will be a plethora of "badge hunters". Quick, to the swoop and let's go, where to next?

Still, sorta bummed me out.

Yeah its realy sad to see that.

I wish there was more to getting master ranger than just xp. The boxes shouldnt just require xp to get, you should have to do things like the box says. For example:

WAYFARING:

-Uses ScoutXP:You must be knowledgable of the world around you andexperienced in exploring.

- TimeRestricted: You need to be an experienced ranger to acheive master and as such you must have a certain amount of 'time' under your belt before you can move up a level.

- Exploration Training: You are required to search out various landmarks on adventure planets. You are not told their whereabouts, just what planet and area they arein (for example gungan head,SWNaboo). The amount of locations you need to visit goes up as you level up ultimatly reaching many many locations for master ranger.

FRONTIERING:

- Uses Wilderness Survival XP: Shows your deeper understanding of the environment to use it as a tool.

- Time Restricted: You cannot be a master of the wilderness and ultimate survivalist by simply grinding camps, you must put the effort in to slowly learn how the environment works, how you can interact with it and learn new techniques.

- Survalist Training: You must forage one of each item and bring them back to the trainer, you must catch one of each fish, you must camp out on each planet.

HUNTING:(well i hate the tracking title, so im not using itheh BRING BACK HUNT MASTER!!!!)

- Uses Scout XP: Shows that the ranger is skill at hunting and harvesting animals.

- Time Restricted: You cannot simply become a hunt masterover night, you must learn the ways of the hunt and work out your own techniques, this can only be done over time.

- Hunter Training: You must track down various legendary hunters from all across the galaxy to listen to their advice and do a mission for each of them. You must track down various hunters on your own, you are not given co-ordinates, just a planet and region. This shows you have what it takes to track downs your adversaries and prey. The animals the hunters tell you to take down vary from easy but rare kills to large but prety common beasts.

TRAPPING:

- Uses Trapping XP: Duh

- Time Restricted: You need to learn and perfect techniques, this cannot be done quickly, take you time at mastering your craft.

- Trapping Missions: As you gain each trap you must use it on a specific creature from each planet. These creatures can be rare but will never be higher level than you can trap. This gives the rangers lots of experience in trapping certain creatures giving him/her a better understanding of creature behaviour.

Thats how i would personally like to level, it would make master ranger take longer, require you to hunt large creatures and use all your skill to gain the rewards. I think we would have a much more prouder (if thats possible) community if we had to level this way.

/sigh...

Agreed. Even though I am not a Master Ranger just yet, it should happen before the weekend. I had been on my way a couple of months after launch and left the game until about a month ago. Now I barely know my head from a bantha's ass, and yet I'm about to master a job that implies vast exploration. How many exploration badges do I have? about 6...

I think it would add to the achievement to have a quest to obtain the Master title. Not just for Ranger though, for any class. Mastering the few classes that I have(along with a number of crafting classes back in the day that didn't give badges) seemeddisappointiingly anticlimactic. Fill your last box, hope for enough AP and find another master.

It would probably seem like griefing to some, but could the Master Ranger community come up with a test internally to hand down to prospective Masters before imparting the title? If the kids didn't feel like performing the task, they could simply walk across Coronet to a trainer... but it would add a level of enjoyment for some I am sure.

JB, for what it's worth mate, it happens sometimes. But it doesn't necesarily mean we are any better or worse...

For example, I started playing this game 2 months ago on the trial. I started with a human thinking I would start at 'baseline' and could always dump this guy and start a 'real' character. I loved the idea of scout, ironically because I liked the idea of getting around and visiting and seeing places.

Once I got into it, I realised Ranger was a natural extension. I wandered over all of Tatooine, and I mean ALL. I had a vehicle bought for me so I could run missions with a group (with my money mind you) and never used it again...nor did much with groups after that little experience, but that's another story...I have visited every city on Tatooine, know the place and it's inhabitants pretty much inside out.

During this time I have briefly visited Naboo (my first journey), Corellia, Lokand yesterday I saw the spaceport and cantina on Dantooine in order to join the Antarian Rangers (on Radiant).

Strangely it was just this morning that I decided to spread the wings and start exploring past Tatooine. I am currently Ranger 2/3/2/2, Creature Handler 1/1/1/3 and Pistoleer 0/0/3/0 (and just hanging on to Novice Medic...).

I don't think this necesarily makes me a bad Ranger. I read the "Do you..." post by Ducimus and had a giggle to myself when I realised everything on there bar perhaps the going anonymous (which I hadn't thought of and might try now!) is me to the core! To be honest my main reason for not leaving Tat was because the whole game was new and I had so much to learn, without the complication of throwing in new planets/animals/etc.

So I hope that explains my perspective, I can't speak for the other guy

I was reflecting on this, while sitting in a shrubbery waiting on my poison subsiding (lair too close, can't pitch a camp).

I have a couple of friends who, if I just happened across their toons in-game and didn't know any better, would probably be the sort of bio's that make me go "ho hum, grinder... " but I now that in one case the (soon to be Master) ranger is the alt of a doc who has been in-game longer than I have and the other is a toon created by somebody who tried out several different templates/species before settling into one that fit.

Their learned creature knowledge, I'm afraid to say, outdoes mine frequently as does their understanding of the game's mechanics. /props to them both, I say. (Hey, can't be too careful, never know whose reading thse things).

I know that during the flatpack jedi and the recent Days Of The Blue Giving-Frogs a lot of people suddenly got the chance to 'try' ranger for size. Not a few of whom commented that, once they got back to their 'real' toon they'd be going Ranger. So, again, there may be new rangers on the block who've not really wandered in the wilderness, metaphorically and literally speaking.

Having said all that, yeah, it's sad to see a Master Ranger, with his taxi light up, and nothing in the biog apart from a few stumbled upon POI's. Would you trust your groups hunt to somebody that'd never been to the Krayt Graveyard? Walked thru the Agrilat Swamps unmolested? Been to an Ewok village?

In a self-contemplative manner I just did an /exam self. I remember each and every one of the POI I've visited. The first was Ben's old house. Just a mere 8k hike from my beginner town. Well, I didn't have a speeder nor a mount and didn't know any different. Then the Pool under Ft Tusken and the Sarlac. Oh boy I was using up those new player exemptions, lol.

Still, one way of looking at it. the ranger you'd met had one thing going for him/her. Focus. A career plan. They wanted ranger and they went and built one. They've got all that lovely exploring and learning still to do, eh?

I've thought that some sort of 'mini-quest' just to get the Master's badge up would be good, as part of the character development / story buildery part of the game. Just training a few greenhorns and then finding a master in the profession, dunno, sometimes it's a bit anti-climactic.

well, best be movin' on. that poison burned off ages ago and I've got dead bantha to milk...

(BTW, what IS the best thing for wooly on Talus?? )

Well JB is talking about a gut who basically knew **edit** about being a ranger. He even said he had to stop laughing to answer him. I personally think that does make him worse that someone who knows all the hunting grounds, the best techniques, what animals drop what, where the pois are without a wp.

The problem is there isno way to distinguish a GOOD ranger from a poor one, a grinder if you will.

There should be some way that you could gain something up to master (gain your knowledge etc) OR something after master to say you are an experienced hunter/ranger/explorer.

Good point Owen, guess I missed that bit

But I must say, I love the idea of some sort of quest for the "Master" titles in ALL professions. I still find it quite bizarre that in all of the professions, the Master box grants a couple of extra bonuses here and there, but nothing truly substantial.

This should represent the pinnacle of the professions, and should give a commensurate bonus. And having to do something that proves you truly understand or are committed to the profession is a fantastic idea!

I totally agree with you, masterage should be worth more than any amount of dabbling can get you. I also would like to see quests and more requirements, i would surrender and work back up if there were fun ways to level up. Ive dont master ranger 10 times so far and im on my 11th on TC, its great fun when you are abit bored with the game, have friends who like to hunt, and you are willing to noob it all over again.

I purposly hunt in my krayt bone armour against everything but the boss creatures now just to put a little bit more challenge back into hunting, its great fun. I would also go buffless but the ham costs restrict this unless on noob creatures. Overall though i would gladly level up ranger again if it was more challenging and more involving, ihave never 'grinded' ranger, just leveled up naturatly, its much more fun that way, this is the same case with nemo i believe.

Someday i really hope they include profession specific quests for masters of the respective professions. A lot of good ideas have been tossed around and I think they would add depth in the game.

As for master rangers not being master explorers, most of the master rangers ive encountered lately have been merely alts for doctors, BE's and armorsmiths... oh well.

Having the "Master" title, simply means that u have been formally taught everything there is to be taught about a given subject. Its like receiving a Ph.D, M.D. or black belt in RL. THey are simply identifiers that you have fulfilled the requirements needed to reach that level. When you finally get those titles that is when the real learning begins. When I first started playing it took me awhile before I left Tatooine. Then when I first got to Corellia I stayed there most of the time. Although by the time I was master I had visited Dathomir and DAntooine. But for me, I had an in-game RP training program that had me spend endless nights on DAthomir in the wilderness. I would make sure to logout in the wilderness all the time. I remember at one point I hadn't left Dathomir for weeks and would only head to the outpost to get any BF healing needed and training. THis was back in September when DAthomir was really popular with grinders on Starsiders. Ahhh, the memories....

At any rate, I dont think staying on one planet is bad for a ranger in training. Also in RL any military ranger training, I'm sure takes place in one general area, in order to master the basics. The point is that in-game a "Master Ranger" is indicative of one that has mastered all fo the basic to wilderness survival. LEarning more about creatures and the like comes from more experience and more learning. By the tiem I hit master, I had NEVER been to Talus or Yavin 4 and had been to Rori and Endor a few times (no more than 5 for each).

Yeah the problem most definatly is that learning the skills is more like just getting enough xp for the next box and so on. You dont actually learn alot about being a ranger by getting the xp so its possible that players can master ranger without actually knowing how to be a ranger if you know what i mean?

The trainers should actually give you training, make you use your new skills, learn you how to track, learn you how to identify social animals and how to reach the far corners of the most dangerous planets, not leave you to it until you have enough xp. There should definatly be a system in that encourages the ranger to seek out new places, new hunting grounds and learn the ways of the wilderness. That would be much more beneficial to all rangers.

Something past master though would the the ultimate goal. Displayable trophys as rewards for reaching Master Ranger: Level 1 etc. You would need to kill 1000 ofa certain creatureor hunt/track one of each creature froma planet etc.

This would be sort of an elite elite thing where you need to be master ranger to take the trials and work towards various tiers giving titles such as:

- The Legendary Hunter (hunting line)

- The Superior Trapper (trapping skills)

- The Pathfinder (wayfaring stuff)

- The Outdoorsman (frontiering/survival stuff)

and ultimatly Master Of The Wilderness.

Each tier would have a set amount of levels or perhaps just one big one for each tier. The requiremements would be something crazy and but not something you could just grind, you would need to get all the exploration badges, visit each town on each planets (npc town) kill each creature from specific planets, spend a certain amount of time in camps and out in the wilderness away from towns. The bonuses would be mods in each of the specific tiers relating to the mods given in the ranger profession. This would be an alternative to gaining fs and instead focusing on ranger stuff rather than jedi stuff.
