Thread: master ranger vs. Ranger

On the Bria forums, somebody was looking for a ranger to help with the Hero Of Tattoine quests. That thread dissolved into having the skillpoints vs. having the skills. It got me thinking about what makes a Ranger a true Ranger. I'll repost my thoughts below. I'd like to know what you think is the difference between somebody with a master ranger tag and a Ranger.

"Lifestyle is the key word there. Ranger tracking is useful for pinpointing things, but the living the lifestyle is what gets you in the right area in the first place. It's not like we hit /areatrack and get a message saying "There are two albatrosses 180M southwest of Kaadara, and another one about 500M NE of Theed, The Gorax is 480M SE of the Smuggler outpost, and the Pirate leader is on a hill 390M NE of Mos Eisley".

The Ranger lifestyle is about wandering around in areas that most people never see any reason to go to (why yes, I have walked to the far SW corner of Dathomir and the NE corner of Endor, heck I've even been to Rori). It's about piles of notes scattered around your desk and a datapad full of waypoints to sightings of rare creatures. It's about knowing that random spawns aren't exactly random and using that knowledge to find the best places to hunt for creature resources. It's about hitting /exa or `2 on every creature you run across to learn and know what it's defenses and attacks are. We are not leet, nor are we uber, we're just people who love the lifestyle. A Ranger's worst nightmare is to become FOTM.

If you are willing to sacrifice a ton of skillpoints, anybody can become a master ranger, but not everybody can be a Ranger."

Ditto !
I seek no glory, I qwell my apetite for curiousity and the hunger to find the unseen and neglected. (And when I find it I kill it for its resources )

Some of my most favorite moments in this game are when I find a spot in some BFE sector of a planet and can see nobody for miles. The only sounds are the birds, an occassional creature roaring and the crackling of my campfire.

I'll be skinning some wooly hide and toss my gurrcat some scraps of the meat. Afterwards, I'll break down my rifle, then clean and recharge it. Scrape the gunk and grime out of my droids components and prep for my next hunt. Happy that I don't have to pay for the servies of a doctor while I stitch up my own wounds. All of this while drinking some Jawa beer and eating some tortun jerky. THIS, is the life for me.

Excellent points. It is all about the lifestyle. Whether in a group or solo, we range far and wide because we can. I see people complain about grinding, but being a Ranger is not about grinding Wilderness Survival XP; rather, it is about living in the wild. There is a difference. Done properly, we get our XP.

A Ranger (or at least a Scout) should be seen as an invaluable member of every group adventuring in the wilds. Our camps should allow groups to explore much farther from civilization than otherwise. Groups should be tracking us down to accompany them on missions for the value we add to a group. I'm sure this was the original concept of the profession, at least in part.

How many times have people sighed in relief to see torches burning in the distance, knowing that healing is not far away? I know I have seen nothing but gratitude from those visiting my camps.

Until battle fatigue can be recovered in our camps (and why not?), towns will be a necessity. However, we are no tied to any city. We are free to roam. That's what being a Ranger is about.

Anyone with the staying power (whatever) to do so can get Master Ranger by grinding. However, a title means little if one hasn't the attendant knowledge and wisdom to effectively use the skills associated with the title. Master Ranger, eh? OK, let's go hunting.

Thats almost exactly how I went through Ranger Camping, and why my bio mentions "Has mastered the Camping while getting ready for work profession" The first three blocks of frontiering I did the "normal" way, ie go hunting, get beaten to a pulp, throw up a camp, sit in camp while healing and crafting and hope someone comes in to prevent me going nuttier.

The last block I had had enough, I sat outside Mos Eisley, tumbled my health down, healed, crafted camps, called pets, watched the stream of people come through the camp on their way to a squill hunt and then realised I'd ran out of metal (can't harvest that, doh).

Now I've got Master Ranger, I'm really back to being a Ranger, popping into my house on Dantooine, or my Ranger Storage on Tat to get supplies, then sodding off out for a week or so, I usually only bump into other Rangers when I'm out and about (Hi DaveG and Daetori )

I guess what I'm saying is that it was fun when I started Ranger, got a bit arse in the middle and is fun again now I don't have to worry about XP

LIke I have been saying.

There are rangers who make master. These people don't leave Theed, but manage to macro their way to master in about a week or so - with trapping taking the longest.

Then you have Master Rangers. Been there, done that, and know the deal.
