"Master Rifleman, Master Ranger......woooohooooooooo", I thought to myself. What a great combination that will be.

I envisioned myself doing a belly crawl to the top of a ridge on one of many mountains on Dathomir with a cl80 Rancor down in the valley....almost out of range.....almost. I pop him with a sniper shot to the headand he is so dazed by the blow that he doesn't even know where I am. I smile to myself and nail him one more time. This time his adrenaline drenched body catches the source of pain out of the corner of his eye and he rushes toward me. I calmly stand up, heave a trap at him and he slows down considerably. I follow up with a shot to his kneecap and he slows down to a pathetic crawl. He does not stop though.....he is enraged by these new handicaps....that he doesn't even understand but his resolve to make me into his next meal is greater than ever. He looks at me with fierce determination as I deliver blow after blow to his knobby gnarled head. By the time he reaches me, I have so weakened him that I feel I don't even need to run. To the contrary, I stand up to him and immediately realize my mistake. He is weak, but he is still a Rancor. He pummels me to near death and I manage to prolong my existence using one of the pest stimpacks money can buy. I continue to exchange blow for blow with himbut soon realize I am about totakethe quick trip to the Science Outpost - via the cloningcenter.I had to think quick....so i came up witha last ditch effort. Imanage to ensnare him with another trap which gives me time to put some distance between us. I aim for the head again, and before he is able to reach me a second time, I drop him. He crashes to the ground with thud. I sit next to his giant corpse exhausted and sigh a breath of relief. I feel almost a sense of respect for this beast. He was a worthy opponent. "Better him then me!!", I think to myself as I begin to remove his valuable hide from his freshly slain carcas.

This is not how it is. This is how it works.

I sniper shot twice. He comes at me full steam, and is unaffected by my traps that don't work. He pummels me to the ground and my one stim pack that I can use only prolongs my inevitable demise.

imho....ranger is a waste of skill points

Well, take along some Bliel so that you can use a Stimpack ever 30s, and maybe keep hitting him and kiting him in a circle while using pdarts to slow him in combo with your specials? I dunno. Ranger needs better defenses I agree.

i don't know why you're having such trouble with traps in combat. Remember to use the P-Dart a lot. I can solo any creature in this game, most of the time I don't even get hit. Solo'd 2 kimos at once...got hit once. Solo'd many a gorax...nary a scratch on me. Only creature that gave me any considerable trouble was the Ancient Krayt that I solo'd, and the only reason he was hard is 'cause of the regen. Took about 20 minutes, and I had to stop and get out of combat to pop another 10 sets of traps out of the crate.

I wrote a guide a while back on how to solo stuff. I'll go back and dig it up real quick, because Calc doesn't seem to want to sticky the thing

Classis example of Duke Nuke'em thinking ... "I am invincible and can sit here and shoot things all day without taking damage".

Wrong - Janice, tell the audience about the wonderful parting gifts our contestant will recieve

Use your brain, your feet and the tools given to you. You will thrive and live.

Sit on your dead azz or in your case grovel in the mud like a slug and you will die.

Your choice. Go read Phen's treatise on soloing for a start.

Well the combat level I'll give you - we could use more defenses vs. creatures.

But Rangers aren't tanks and I doubt we'll ever be tanks. If you can just stand there, and shoot at whatever, where's the challenge? Ranger is a lot of fun and I'm not saying it certainly couldn't use some help, but you really do have to get out of the tank mentality.

Without some more defenses I think we're a bit overchallenged atm but it's surmountable. When I came back to SWG shortly after the CU again, after a few months off, it took me a really long time to relearn how to play my Ranger, and what worked best. Not to mention how to use traps now!

It just takes practice, really, to solo one mob, two is tougher (and that's where I really think getting more defenses would rock, helping one survive vs. multiple mobs). But read the linked guide - it's very good!

JB,

I don't know if you read the same thing I did, but what I read was about a guy throwing traps and running around trying not to die. Using every tool he could to giterdun! Once again you fire at your own troops man. How about instead of taking pot shots at our own people, why not give them some of your age old wisdom instead?

Oh wait I have a better idea, sit on your little self made pedistal instead, and snub your nose down on everyone who isnt the perfect ranger you obviously you are.

Dont think I would put it like that, but, yeah this guy is saying he does all teh rangery things but doesnt do as well as any other CL80 toon. Yeah you can survive as a ranger, but mostly just survival is not enough, especially when you pay for it.

From what I understand he is CL80 but isnt able to handle mobs like other CL80 do... Maybe I am wrong, can the author please verify?

Thats my brick wall. The ancients regen rate is higher thanI can damage for any length of time even with bleed shot and my droid. I'm going shoping for a new set of guns, maybea highermin damage (un-puped) will help.

I gotta backJB on this. I have got to be the worst Ranger on any two galaxies, and I've asked some pritty dumb questions on this forum. Never the less JB has never flamed me ( at least to my knowledge ). If some one comes across as crying or just not trying and flameing the profession JB pounces.9 times out of 10 hes right. In this caseI can see what hesflaming about. 75% of players pick up a profession and expect it to make them Uber.

Sorry fellas, this isn't one of thoes professions. Ranger requires you to work constantly to perfect your field craft and your strategy. Just because your a doublemaster CL 80doesn't mean you can hunt, it just means you can grind.
