Uh, hey everybody. I bought this game today and am thinking about being a ranger- that is, I would like to, but I reallywanted to know if somebody could clear upa few things first.
Probably the most importantthing right now is getting in teh game. I am on the launchpad and it's downloading stuff for the game, but it says that it is gonna take 45 hours- is it really going to take taht long? And, if so, will I have to keep the internet up while it's loading? I have AOL so I would have to tie up the phone line for nearly two days if that estimation is correct, and plus I really don't want to wait two days to play, hehe.
Secondly, what is that you guys do, exactly? I mean, I know you hunt animals and stuff but is there any combat related skills that come with it? In the manual it says taht you can defend people in combat- how does that work?
And third,I wanted to know a good server with some ranger guys on it- just in case I get a little stuck in the game, no harm in having useful friends right? I was thinking Eclipse- it seems like there are a few good guys on there. If no one responds to this message before I getmy character created, I will create him on Eclipse, but considering it may be two days before I actually get playing, I doubt that will be the case.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer any of these questions, especially the ones in the first paragraph regarding the time it's gonna take to get this thing going. I appreciate any help you can give me!

If you are on dial up, yeah, it make take that long. There have been many many patches of the game since the original disks were made. Two words - Broadband or DSL.
What do Rangers do? We are super scouts. We furnish hides, meat and bone to crafters who need it. We can also find animals with our tracking skills, allow others to wander around camoflaged so they don't get eaten by creatures every 10 seconds, trap creatures (though honestly, the best traps come from our scout skills) and we can use any weapons skills we want, as they all complement Ranger.
Downside - If you want to kill other players (PvP) we suck. A lot of skill points are used are used to get Master, leaving enough to master a fighting skill and some left over.
Upside - We can become fairly rich, not rich rich like Doctors, but well off, quickly. And unless you are a doofus, your needs are few.
Also, we are probably one of the most rare professions that actually can do stuff outside of cities. There are more Jedi than Master Rangers. And there is not a planet you can't go to and wander around in comparative safety. Note - comparative means as long as your maskscent is working, you are good to go. Those without maskscent suck wind on some planets just trying to go from point A to point B.
Please go and read Brisc's outstanding guide on scouting on the Scout Forum. That will give you an idea of what do do.
Finally, any server is ok - we are here to help with any questions. Just don't ask for macros or waypoints for areatrack and you will be fine (inside joke - but don't do the those things).
Have fun, most of us do

Well I'm glad to see you've joined the game!
I've gotta say that starting out, you'll have a TON of question and it take a while to get onto things. The best tip I have for you is to find some veteran players (or 1) who is willing to help you out, take you around, hunt with you etc. Don't ask for money, just ask for help. Out of this you will likely have someone toss you some credits because it's hard to earn money as a noob.
Ok, your questions...
Ranger is a fun profession, but not for everyone. The nice thing about it is that it's a great way to start earning money asnew player. once I learned how to hunt effectively I started to FINALLY make some coin.
You WILL need a combat profession to compliment your ranger skill. My suggestions are swordsman or rifleman. You will find lots of posts in here about which combat prof to choose so I suggest you find them. also, there's a sticky at the top of this page that compares different combat profs.
Finding a ranger friend is a great idea and you can do an in-game search for a ranger or simply look at the 'ranger for hire by galaxy' thread stickied above. If you want to start a character on Naritus I'd be happy to help you out, although there are only a few rangers there and I won't be able to play again until the new year
I've never played on eclipse but they do seem to have a few rangers.
Your downloading time sounds really crappy. If you have dial-up that's really gonna be a pain for lag and stuff... don't really have any comments on that point. So pick a combat prof that suits you and pick up novice scout as well. I found the game slow to get going and was frustrated with what I could do in the game until my skills became a little more advanced.
Good luck to you and glad to see that you're considering the Ranger profession. Oh ya, btw, ranger is the best prof for hunting creatures (PvE) but isn't great for fighting against other players in the game (PvP). Personally, I love ranger because I don't PvP at all so it's great for me, but choose based on what you're looking for out of the game.
Have fun!!

If you come to the corbantis server I'll set you up with some money and equipment free of charge and i'll point you in the right direction. Of course any server will be fine and any of the other rangers on the other servers would be happy to do the same.
Also don't hesitate to ask questions, but don't forget to check the above stickies first just incase your questions can be answered there.
in game name is Uudoo.
cheers.

Dude, if you're thinking you're going to be able to play this game with a dial up account, you're insane. Get high speed. If not, it's unlikely you will be able to enjoy the game.

Well, I really don't have the power to change my internet provider at the time. Will I be able to play with dial up, or no?

As long as its a 56.6 connection you should be fine i used too play with one, it was a little annoying in citys like coronet. but for the most part it wasnt too bad. but it will take a long time to download unfortunatly. but as far as what server to play on take your pick, you'll always find someone to lend a hand. i'm on radiant server so feel free to come there if u like i'll be more than happy to help u in any way i can. my in game name is ala'dar webb.

actually, the game runs fairly well on dial up, a couple of people i know use it and experience few problems. Most 'lag' problems are caused by low memory/bad graphic cards.

if you have good dial up you wioll be fine after the long DL,, if you got jump to light speed it would ahve been a few hours of DL instead of 2 days,, god that has to suck.
Servers, i have played on a few and if you like to roll play Europe-Chimaera is awsome, ive only been here a month and was about read to leave the game.. now im having a blast again. Its lots of fun when people role play all over also people are nice as long as you dont mind being called M8 short for mate : )
For class if your consitering ranger, if you want to solo hunt, go with melee weapon. Rifles are great but can be hard solo atleast till you get conceal shot. But if you add in Creature handler combined with rifles that is awsome you cna hunt unbuffed and save 100's of thousands of credits : )
Also grab medic when you start using stim packs is a very good thing. I would suggest starting in mos Esiley as there generally newbies around and you can find a group fairly easy.. Also there aer lots of fun quests on tat, and theme parks, Jabba's is a good low end park, along with Nym's on lok though i would atleast lvl up a bit before i did either. The bazzar is a good place to find stims and weapons, but check the prices, cause some stuff on the bazzar can be a total rip off. Also do the missions in your helper droid they will tell ya a lot, and make some money. Also look on the bazzar for a land speeder, you can nomally pick these up for 6k there, they arent the best but they are cheap..

Hey, thanks for all the advice guys!
And thank goodness the loading time went down. What I did was I exited SWG, went out and bought JTL, and istalled. It cut my loading time in half. It is loading right now... patch ten. And as I am new to this whole computer thing, what the heck is a patch anyways? And why do theytake so bloody long to download? Path nine- whatever that is- took about four hours to download. The launchpad says I have eight hours left, but based on the rate of download and the fact that my estimated finishing time has dropped from 11:00 Pm to 5:00 Pm overnight, I am guessing i have six to seven hours left. That is, if there are11 patches. I saw on the main website for the game that there had been a thing called publish 11 something, and I guessed that might have something to do with patches.
Oh, and planets. I was gonna go Corellia, but I let my brother have 1 character spot on my account and he wants to go there, so in order that we both might get a different esperience I said ok and am trying to choose another. Rori is off because, according to a core systems thread, the planet is dead. My friend, who plays this game and was the one who first told me about it, said that I should avoid Tatooine (sp?) because everyone there is an immaturenine year old. I am going to avoid Naboo just to stay away from those bloody Gungans. So that leaves... Talus, I believe. How's it there? Good for a beginning palyer or no?

Oh.... bloody milk. Ugh. Almost finished downloading patch ten when there was an error. It said the following:
Download: patch_10.tre...
Optimize: patch_10.tre...
Warning: File size does not match
Local 29423388 vs. server 33429694, possible mid-push. Please try agin or restart the application.
So I did a full scan to get the thing running again, and have to dowload patch ten again even though I've already done it. If it has just finished optimizing... sigh. That will add probably another four hours onto to the time, three if I am lucky.

Hehe, stick with it. You'll get there.
Playing on a dial up? I do fine playing on possibly the heaviest populated US server from Europe via dialup (Bria) and, although I typically get pings in the 300 region, things look fine from my side. I don't suffer lag, or extended load times, run at 24+ fps. Trick is to get a half decent video card and as much memory as you can crowbar into your machine.
(I can happily run two accounts on the same connection, different pc's, and only suffer lag if I go to C-net or Theed on a holiday)
The only downside I can see is the huge amount of time downloads can and do take. But hey, it's worth it.
