Playing on a dial up? I do fine playing on possibly the heaviest populated US server from Europe via dialup (Bria) and, although I typically get pings in the 300 region, things look fine from my side. I don't suffer lag, or extended load times, run at 24+ fps. Trick is to get a half decent video card and as much memory as you can crowbar into your machine.

(I can happily run two accounts on the same connection, different pc's, and only suffer lag if I go to C-net or Theed on a holiday)

The only downside I can see is the huge amount of time downloads can and do take. But hey, it's worth it.

I'll agree wholeheartedly with Ken's statement. I have a DSL connection... but only a 1.4 GHz proc and 512 memory. I crash about 25% of the time loading into C-Net on Radiant and even on Wanderhome, which is comparitively low volume, it takes me about twice as long to load into anywhere as it takes my friends. So a good PC is definitely the key.

Patches are fixes and add-ons to the game.. soo they are supose to make the game play better.

Ram is the biggest thing, anything under 1 gig of ram the game laggs horibly.. its much better to have more ram than a good vid card.

There are imature people all over. some servers are worse than others though im not going to name names.. But soo far on chimeara it has been a great experiance and would recomend the server over any of the 3-4 i have played on.. radiant, tempest, i spent the next most amount of time.

when a patch fails, your best bet is to close launch pad, go clear your temp files in temp directory, and your internet explore,, its under tools located at the top of yoru broweser, and give it another try. If you still have trouble just call up the people at SOE and tell them you are having trouble if your lucky you will get a compitent tech : )

Hehe, finished installationa nd downloading. And then, well, me being me, and therefore naturally curious, I saw the option "Register Expansion" below that beautiful play buttom... and, well, me being me, and therefore naturally rash,I started registering Jump to Lightspeed. So it started loading again hehe- who'd woulda thought it would take four hours, eh? Luckily, towards the end of downloading the base game it began to install very rapidly, and what should have taken me two hours took thirty minutes instead. Hoepfully I'll get lucky again, but if not, well, I've waited a year to play this game, another four hours will not kill me. Hopefully.

Its worth the wait. as long as you have patience (have to have it for the camping tree or your head might explode).

After 26 grueling hours of downloads, finally got finished. I went on the Eclipse server as a Bothan called Gledako (all the other generated names were really dumb). The game then forced me to choose between Tatooine, Corelia and Naboo instead of thestarting five, and then I ended up landing in Coronet. The lag was terrible- I could barely move anywhere or do anything. Bought a one way ticket to Talus, the city is something like Nashall or around that. Then I let my bro make a character, he went to Theed and has really bad lag too. Will this improve? I certainly hope so-seriously, as a scout I didn't wanna have to spen alot of time in big cities anyways, but i would think that lag would be minimal at night when less people are playing.

I was having problems with load times and drag when running through a major city. Since upgrading my meager 1.2Ghz processor isnt an option at the moment, I went from 512mb to 2Gig of RAM, and its plain sailing from here on. Being on a T1 connection I cant really comment on lag The the game play of SWG isnt really dependant on ping times anway, with combat being turn (or time) based, you only need to worry about your ping times if you're in space combat.

its not lag, its machinelag. You should really get a gb ram, I got it a month ago and it made all the difference.

Also, Coronet and Theed, along with Moenia are the most laggy cities in the game (machine lag that is),
so dont go there unless you have to... Actually, nobody knows why Moenia is laggy, since nobody is ever there. Theed and Coronet is the universial meetingplaces, so expect alot of lag.

No one said a ranger's life wasn't lonely......you'll enjoy the solitude soon enough.

I'm a 2 year veteran, I've been a TKM/Master Rifleman as long as I can remember. Well, after CU came out and having 1 melee prof and 1 ranged wasn't too good of an idea anymore, I respecced to TKM/Master Swordsman. This template is getting old to me, so I was considering a few others. I always wanted to try Ranger but didn't want to lose Rifles or TKM. I am now asking you Rangers for advice on grinding this prof, what you Rangers enjoy doing, and how to best go about doing things. I want to be a Master Ranger/Master Rifleman. I don't plan to be one of these token respec Rangers that just want to solo Krayts, I want to compliment my guild well on these hunts.

So, to get to get to the point, I want a fun class that is able to survive on its own, be able to roam planets on foot just for fun to relive the old days, and have a value to my guild and to groups. We have a chef amd a BE who would be happy to have someone harvest them resources, so any tips on hunting/harvesting large quantities of organics would be very helpful and appreciated.

P.S. I've been reading the Ranger forums a lot the past couple days, Please don't flame me

I love being a rifleman/ranger. To me it's the ultimate hunter.

Harvesting in a group is going to be massive.

The only problem you might have is getting the trapping xp. Best bet there is getting trapping food. (forgot the name sorry) Also consider dropping your CL, otherwise you might get 1 xp per kill only.

Hope you like the profession, it's very worth it imo

Dweezel (I may have spelled it wrong, but I'm sure I'm close). That SHOULD give a boost to trapping. How helpful it may be depends a lot on the current CL and trapping skill. Dropping some CL may be necessary, which stinks, I'll concede, but so far there aren't any other workarounds.

ok....good news is that Ranger is a blast......I have never has as much fun with any other prof.

bad news.... in order to grind trapping with a novice scout....(what you would need to start out as), you are going to almost be forced to drop your CL down to about 40 - 50...I know it sucks. If you still have your token respec...consider using it to at least get master scout. That way, you only have to drop your CL to about 70 (I am speaking from experience) and with that food dweezel...(yes the other guy spelled it right) giving you a +20 to trap skill, you will have a total skill of 70. with this you can trap creatures CL 68 - 72. I grinded the first 2 boxes of trapping... (be sure not to put points into anything else or you risk raising your CL to high) and still using Dweezel, that gives you a skill of 90 for trapping. At this point... you can group with CL 80s... put your weapon away, and do nothing but trapping and harvesting. you will not get any combat XP....but you will get roughly 5k trapping XP per critter.

Also, with double XP now is the time to do this. when you grind alone....throw 2-3 successful traps and then kill it with your rifle or whatever weapon you decide to use with double XP you should get about 1500 - 2000 trap XP per kill. once you are in a group.....you will get about 9 - 10k per critter as long as you dont use your weapon. then harvest after your group has killed all, and you will be master ranger in 1 - 2 days

hope this helps
