Thread: My Ranger Proposal! Came up with this when i was bored a while ago.
Thought I would pop this up again, it pretty much says what I think Ranger should become!
Cuchulainn Darklight’s Ranger Revamp Proposal.
The SWG RANGER, the CONSUMATE HUNTER/TRACKER!
(ALPHA VERSION).
DISCLAIMER.
I have tried to design this ranger template as something that uses as much of the ideas the ranger community have come up with in the past few years. Also, I have tried to encompass all types of ranger and give them something fun to play with no matter how THEY may play their personal ranger inlive. I have also tried to include as much combat upgrade information that is available into this proposal to keep it updated and vibrant and I will update it as more info becomes available. I have tried to make ranger a viable combat class on its own so that all rangers are not restricted to taking a combat profession in addition to ranger. They will be free to dance in skimpy outfits or make loads of speeders or whatever now and still compete.
Please, if you do not agree with anything try to explain why you don’t agree and what you would change my idea too, to improve for the good of the ranger community as a whole. And remember, if you don’t like something in here you would not be forced to use it but someone else with a different playstyle or templates may NEED it to be viable.
Where possible I have used abilities, skills and equipment that exists already in game. Or in other mmorpgs. This means that if this revamp was taken up it would only require retooling of current code to suit ranger, rather than starting from scratch.
I have also changed the XP requirements to bring them inline with other elite combat professions (CU wise) and dropped some of the SP requirement so you can take Master Ranger/Master Combat (e.g. rifles) and still have enough for 6 FS trees, everyone else can do this so why not us as well!
Note also that the Tiers do not necessarily follow on from their scout counterparts as I consider Ranger as NOT a continuation of Scout but, the Elite Combat version of Scout just as Pistoleer is an Elite Combat version of Marksman.
I may be stepping on the Bounty Hunters toes here but, from the CU testing and releases notes so far it looks like BH/RANGER might be a good template. Plus with SOEs intention to get more grouping like the old days I can think of no better team up than some Bounty Hunters and some Hunter/Trackers!
I have tried to make Ranger more important for groups. At the moment and with the way the CU is going we will be looking for a group to do the killing for us so we can harvest. I have tried to make it so that groups will now go looking for rangers as an important part of any group.
Furthermore, despite (perhaps specifically because of) the fact I have lowered the SP cost of the skills a little I have decided to make reaching the higher ranks of ranger give the best rewards. Hopefully this will help to make more Master Rangers or long-term part-ranger templates rather than FOTM template owners (especially coupled with the remaining Master Scout prerequisite).
Anything with ??? beside it means im not sure of it yet and will change it/update it as more information becomes available or I have a flash of inspiration.
Anything I don’t mention at the end stays the same as it is now, except for maybe getting shuffled around a bit!
Finally, I think I have made this version of ranger appealing to as many as possible, especially those new players who join in the future and have no idea what profession to take up, this will help keep the ranger profession alive for the future.
Remember I will keep updating this post as it is still very much a work in progress so keep calling back with your thoughts until its ready then ill post it in the Revamp Proposal forum.
Thank you for your time and patience and please post your comments at the end, if you make it through!

A concealed shot ranged ranger special attack. This can ONLY be used whilst camoed and only allows a basic attack with the equipped ranged weapon (perhaps with a damage modifier?)(ranger bow can use its special attacks except Exploding Arrow here). When used against Creatures or NPCs it increases there chance of spotting you by 10% (too much maybe?). If used against Players it will cause a break in camo in 10% (too high?) of uses against players with no camo/detect skill mods, will break 20% of times against players with camo/detect skill mods of +1 - +20, will break 40% of times against players with camo/detect skill mods of +21 - +40, will break 60% of times against players with camo/detect skill mods of +41 - +60, and will always break against players with camo/detect skill mods of +61 or more.
Battle Armour Accuracy Mitigation. Part of the CU. Does what it says on the tin. Armour degrades your accuracy, Mitigation gives it back.
Battle Armour Movement Mitigation. Part of the CU. Does what it says on the tin. Armour degrades your movement, Mitigation gives it back.
Part of the CU. Does what it says on the tin. Armour degrades your rate of fire, Mitigation gives it back.
Part of the CU. Special Skill which allows you to spend points to recover from blind. All combat profs get it.
Replaces the ineffective /conceal ability. /camo causes the ranger to use up one of the camouflage kits present in their inventory. The camo will last until the ranger logs out or the camo is broken by a creature, NPC or player. The skill camo also represents the rangers ability to detect another camoed ranger within a determined range (pistol range). To spot camoed players the ranger uses the new /detect skill to attempt to break nearby players camo. This also works to detect the new rifleman skill of conceal. A ranger will always break the rifleman’s (?). And a higher level ranger will always break a lower level rangers camo. There is a 50/50 chance of a master ranger breaking a fellow master rangers camo. Also, a Ranger has the ability to track (i.e see) a Jedi when cloaked, dependent on the Jedis level. However a Master Ranger will always be able to see past the Jedi Cloak.
When camo is activated the ranger is removed from the radar and can not be seen by another player in game unless they do a successful /detect. Only rangers drop from radar when camoed. Players grouped with a ranger can see the ranger on both radar and visually.
The camo applied to non-rangers by a friendly ranger only works on NPCs and creatures and only lasts for 15 mins and can always be /detected by ANY level of ranger (/sigh or however it works now).
Only the ranger Bow may fire whilst camoed. All bow specials can be used unless otherwise stated. Once combat is initiated the targeted player, NPC, or creature will be able to track the incoming fire and target the attacking ranger after 15 seconds of unbroken combat.
Players camoed by a Ranger break their camo by initiating combat.
As the master ranger is adept at moving through dangerous environments with ease he receives NO HAM cost when he applies burst run.
This bonus now applies to ALL attacks whether ranged/melee/combat medic/whatever.
A Master Ranger only special attack. The ranger has an affinity for living creatures and does not wish to prolong their suffering. This attack can be performed with any melee weapon (including vibroknuckler) that the ranger is certified for. Very high damage. Long wind up time, very long cool down time.
See Camouflage above. Uses camo level to determine its level. (Two sides of the same coin kind of thing.)
Part of the CU. Special Skill which allows you to spend points to recover from dizzy. All combat profs get it.
A Master Ranger only special attack. Bow only weapon attack. Very high damage. Very long wind up time, long cool down time. Ideal first strike whilst camoed. Breaks Camo upon end of cool down period.
Speaks for itself really, on the new CU skill tables.
Once again, Speaks for itself really, on the new CU skill tables.
A Ranger special attack that targets the enemies hamstring (or equivalent muscle). A Posture Down attack causing the enemy to slow to half its speed for 30secs upon recovery (SNARE). Usable with any melee or ranged weapon or a TKM punch/kick (ranger or otherwise that the ranger is certified for). Short wind up time, long cool down time. Low Damage.
The ranger now has a much improved ability to combat melee defence attacks due to his years of fighting against agile creatures.
The ranger now has a much improved ability to combat ranged defence attacks due to his years of fighting against agile creatures.
Part of the CU. Special Skill which allows you to spend points to recover from stun. All combat profs get it.
A Ranger special attack that allows the ranger to target a perceived “ch!nk in the armour” of the creatures defences. Usable with any melee or ranged weapon or a TKM punch/kick (ranger or otherwise that the ranger is certified for). Long wind up time, short/med cool down time. High Damage.

Once the ranger has trained the novice ranger box, all XP derived from harvesting, camouflage and, trapping (formerly Scout XP) will change its name to Ranger XP (sounds better but just the same thing!). When the Ranger has a Ranger weapon equipped and uses it to kill a creature or NPC he will gain Ranger XP also (instead of standard weapons XP).
Hunting XP is gained by killing a creature with a ranger weapon as above. The hunting XP is 10% of the Ranger XP gained from the kill (same as combat XP in other professions). Hunting XP is also gained when a carcass is harvested for organic resources, again, the hunting XP is 10% of the Ranger XP gained from the harvesting of the carcass.

The only issue I have is that the hunting xp should be based on the harvest actions and not necessarily the kill with the Ranger weapon. Mainly because I think it better to give that xp no matter what weapon is used to kill the creature. If you want to add a percentage bonus for using the Ranger weapon, that may be more viable.
Think of the non-ranged, Rangers. Unless at the last bit of HAM to kick and punch away, a MR/TK whippes out his Ranger weapon and uses it for a kill shot, he will never get the hunting xp.
