Ok, I deceided to run Quakke's (sp?) Quest for the Cyber-arm.... I figured as a Master Ranger it'd be no problem.

Boy, was I ever wrong!

My first mistake was starting an hour before I had to go to work.

Then, while hunting cannibal dewbacks in the southern Dune Sea, I come upon a lair! I think, Hey great, no problem...

well, only 4 cannibals spawned from the lair.

OK, 6 to go, I can area track for them!

Since when do Transprot Shuttles, AT-STs and Stormtroopers from bases show up as Animals?!?

Nada, I move a bit.... nothing.

I check my over head map and it looks as if the entire southern half of the Dune Sea is covered by 3 Player cities and harvestor/extractor farms! Man, I felt like the Indian in those litter commercials from the '70s...

Yeah there are definitely some areas that are thoroughly overrun. I sincerely hope that now the /housepack command is in game, the devs will be doing scans of each planet to remove old and defunct structures and pack them up in their owner's inventory. Perhaps once the derelict buildings are removed there will be some wilderness again.

I've had that quest in my journal for the past three weeks and still have one, ONE Dewback to go. Even with track it has been almost impossiable for me to hunt down those very elusive beasts. But, about the sprawl of houses etc., I agree with you compleatly. There are just way to many things out there that aren't being used any more.

So, I REALLY hope the DEVs pack up those houses.

I had the same problem when I did the quest. A lair and most of its inhabitants were inside houses. I did somewhat of a unrangerly thing, I suppose, when I went to the city's mission terminal and pulled a couple of missions for the dews.

I may just have to hang my head in shame and go to a mission terminal,,,,

although I thought I read somewhere on the forums that cannibal dewbacks don't show on the terminals ( I probably shouldn't believe everything I read ).

personally, i think the way housing works should have been based on the "area" where the buildings are. For example, on Tat, there is an area known as "The Jundland wastes". Now, in the movies, these are not to be traveled lightly. In the game, they are not able to be traveled as all, since the entiire area is filled with cities and harvs.

I say turn that "area" system into something cool. Make it so that each area has a modifier to the base housing cost, based on it's danger level. You want to build a house on peaceful Naboo? Cool, you have base house costs, because there's very little wear and tear on the building. You want a house in the middle of the Krayt graveyard? Sure, go ahead. But it's going to cost you 200,000 credits an hour to keep that puppy in liveable condition.

That, to me, would be cool.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Many, many moons ago, when a player with a million credits was not just rich but probably lying ( ) and managing to save up for and get a mediochre set of compo was an achievement, I remember great swathes of the planets being uninhabited.

The Jundland Wastes, the Dune Sea, the Western Grass Plains. Names redolent of wide, open space or MAMBA. Miles and Miles of B*gger All.

And it was good.

Creatures were dangerous. Look out, bocatts up ahead, better go round.... frell, Tusken snipers. Tell Ma I'll be home in time for breakfast kid...

Then came JtL and a huge monkey factory in space started dribbling, sorry, flooding credits into the economy. Sure there'd been ways of making a chunk of coin before, but c'mon, here were characters with no terrestrial combat abilities churning out credits by trading in the junk loot they aquired in space. (Oh would that the Junk Dealers were so generous as the JtL guys... all those crummy CDEFs...)

As the money rolled in, folk were able to buy and maintain houses. Lots of houses. Lots of lots were traded too. The planets rapidly started to choke up.

Dantooine is just one immense suburb on some servers with the Janta and Dantari villages crammed in like shanty towns. Heck, on Bria theres a Dantari village IN a city. Looks like the cavemen have got tehir own shuttleport and cloner... Naboo? All that good flat hunting ground? Wall to wall harvesters. Most of which are just burning away as the players who owned them have left the game, forgotten where the were or just plain lost interest as there's more 'fune' ways to get coin.

Even Dathomir has harvesters and factories tucked away in every nook and cranny. I feel sorry for the NS, I mean, they can't let the rancors out for an evening runaround now for fear of them getting hurt by machines...

Away back then I put up a post asking for help trying to find a way to preserve the open spaces, as they are our workspace, but I made the mistake of labelling it a petition and it crashed and burned. Now, well, I hate to say I told you so...

So. Here's my advice.

If you find a clear space of unbuilt grassland, with some good spawn points on it and no major towns nearby... cover it in houses before some other squatter does

A very, very valid point.

Thankfully (at least on Farstar) lot swaps have been fewer lately, hopefully this is the shape of things to come.

I also do resource harvesting myself (with no more than6 lots as I have 2 houses at the moment - shock horror! ) and hate to see that especially on Corellia and Dathomir most flat spaces are covered with burning (most probably lot swappers') harvesters and they do not allow me to place my own for a couple of days.

I was asked for help a couple of days ago by a player wanting me to track cannibal dewbacks. I tracked for about 20 minutes before I got bored then went and got a mission for them from a terminal in a player city

Those condemned buildings area real problem. Especially since they don't disappear anymore without maintenance. A guy leaves the game and his house runs out of maintenance. So it deducts from his bank account and when he's broke it will sit there indefinately being useless. And from what I have heard the back payments are so tremendous that people who come back rarely can (or want to) afford to leave the houses up, and take them down. Especially since they come back and find their accounts empty.

I read a thread on the core systems board yesterday concerning this problem. Someone said that the new house packup was the Dev's first step to take down all those houses and put them in the owners datapad.

Sounds plausible to me.

Then we can roam the vast empty grass plains and endless deserts again.

And those darn condemned vendor tents willdisappear from my home town's marketplace.
