My favorite are the tells out of the blue: DO you have some spare credits you could lend me? This happens very often on TC for some reason. After saying no, I've put some of these people on my friends list to see if they ever log back on. THey usually don't.

So did I turn them off the game? Or are they those people who make accounts solely to beg for money that they then tip to a main character and rinse/repeat? Beware these people, they will sell the credits you give them online to other people for RL money.

I will help with all the advice, hunting assistance, etc. but I will not tip credits anymore unless the person has proved to me they are honestly interested in the game.

True. I have to admit when I first joined TC somewhere in the back of my head I was looking for the magical dev to decend and say "Great, you are here! We want you to test ____."

Also very true. Hmmm. I need to watch myself. I may be reaching the "disgruntled" level. Time to spend some quality time alone on Endor!

I have met some very kind people when I was a newbie. Time for reconing:

I started on Rori and saw a grand total of about 5 other ppl over the first week or so. 2 of them were a jedi and his alt grinding doc. Things I got as a newbie from people I met after that:

1. My first group hunt with a guild called red fist. One member saw me on Rori, lost and forlorn, invited and paid my way to a hunt on Yav IV. I finally understood what MMOG was all about.
2. 50k from a kind individual with whom I spoke for a bit. Bought my first decent armor and weapon with this.
3. My first vehicle (a landspeeder) from someone I met and grouped with at the Lord Nyax POI.

After that, I didn't get much beyond some AP from total stangers. Of course, my guildies do help whenever they can.

I saw firsthand how much difference a small tip/gift can make to a newbie, so I try to help people whenever I can. I know some of that goes to Master Beggar grinders but its a small price to pay. ("It's better to let 10 guilty people go than to convict 1 innocent person.") I do try to minimize it by refusing beggars with comp armor (!), serial beggars, long-distance beggars, the new planet and auction channel beggars, etc.

BUT, I did tip Snookems and I'm not ashamed She was roleplaying a naive beggar, and she was brilliant!

On kauri I had a similar incident before. I was logged on, and I received a tell on darkfas. The tell said something like "my house is about to be destroyed, may I have credits to repair it!?". I asked him how much he needed, he said 10k, so I gave it to him. I then logged on my alt, TDT. He sent me a tell on TDT, again asking for money. He used the same ploy as before, but this time was asking for 100k.

I flamed him a little, saying that I just gave him 10k on my other character for his house. He grew very silent, and didn't send another tell to either character ever again.

It's amazing that people can really make money at this, but they do. Not a lot of people in the game are as helpful as I - but there are some who are and willingly give money to help people. It's kinda sad when people take advantage of people being nice. Because of this incident, I no longer give money much to people - even new guild members who I've known for a long time. I trade service for service with people though, so both of us are mutually on top, but money I don't give much any more.

Oh, one good thing I should comment though...

I once made a new character on another server, and was hunting near rori trying to level up. I was armorless, buffless, just killing stuff with the basic weapons I got in the game. One person, an imperial believe it or not, came by and asked how I was doing. I mentioned I was doing fine, and stated that I was new to this server and trying to level up. He tipped me 50k, and had his weaponsmith friend make me better weapons. I was very surprised by this gesture that he gave to me. I told him that I would repay this to another newbie.

I have done that. Been on tatooine many times, and various places, and tipped people money only when they don't beg for it.

I guess there are times one can give money, and when they shouldn't. I never ran around begging for money in this game, or another other MMORPG that I've played. I have had some people give me money though, which was nice when I was just starting out.

Well, the joke is probably on you though, that's the unfortunate part. How can a lazy, broke noob guy suddenly earn 300k? Let me count the ways, lol. But here is one: on Bria right now, several different docs are paying 200cpu for a certain particularly good spawn of avian meat. Sheesh, even a noob with a cdef could probably kill enough rasps in an evening to earn 300k that way, lol. You succeeded in embarrasing him, true, but you probably robbed yourself of a sale... doh!
