Scout & Ranger FAQ


Ok guys, im planning on compiling a new FAQ covering both scout and ranger which should hopefully adress a lot of repetetive questions asked on the forums, but i need your help


If we all put together we can get this FAQ nailed down in no time so i can compile and post it. So, if you can think of some questions that either you once asked, still need answering or hear a lot then please post them.


You dont need to go through the whole thread to see what has already been posted if you dont want, ill do the editing and compiling later on, i just need your FAQs.



  • If you have a question that you dont know the answer to (in other words you would like included it but dont know the answer) then please post with a red title (ANSWER NEEDED) so its easily flagged to get answers for and for others to reply to.



  • If there is a question and an answer that you are not 100% about then please post with a yellow title (NOT SURE) again so its easily recognisable and answers can be compared and a decision made.


All the other questions just jot them down in bullet or just scribbled i dont mind.

  • What does Terrain Negotiation do?

It quickens your speed over "rugged terrain," like mountains and hills. At a point, this bonus no longer applies to your walking speed, and instead increases the speed at which you crawl while prone.




  • What are camps used for?

They are used to heal wounds, but at a very slow pace without any medicines or healing specific characters. You also can avoid the 15 second delay to call a droid, vehicle, or pet. The two camps that Rangers can craft hold public crafting stations (First chemical, then chemical and weapon / droid / general item stations)





  • Can other people use my traps / camps?

No, and yes. The requirement to use these items is a skill modifier for camping and trapping. If the character does not have the required skill to place a particular camp kit or use a certain trap, then they will receive a message similar to "you lack sufficient skill." Because this only applies to items that they obtain from someone else, that means anything you can craft from Ranger and Scout boxes you will be able to use.





  • What does creature knowledge do?

Right now, it is not working. It is supposed to give you information about the resistances of the creature, what resources can be harvested from them, whether they are aggressive, stalker or tamable, and whether or not they deal deathblows when they incapacitate you.





  • What does "aggressive" and "stalker" mean?

Stalker means that they are territorial. If you get close enough to them, they will start to follow you and may even initiate combat. Aggressive means that they instantly attack anything that gets close to them.





  • Why isn't my /rescue command working?

Rescue was being used to grief people in the old combat system, so the Devs placed a requirement for the target of this ability to /peace so that the /rescue command would be initiated. However, because /peace is no longer an option for players, the ability cannot function because it is waiting for a signal from a non-existant command.





  • Why is it that thug npcs are aggroing me without making a camo check when I am concealed?

The Devs have stated that Camo was not meant to work against NPCs, even though the skill box description clearly states otherwise. This is a "known issue" of some sort, and we do not expect for it to be fixed any time soon.





  • Do camo kits rely on quality of resources for their effectiveness?

Only for the amount of uses per crafted stack. This can be experimented on to get the maximum of 12 if you use a weapon, droid and general item crafting station. We have experimentation points with this item, even though they are not reflected in our skill boxes.





  • Do traps / camps need high quality resources?

No. Right now, the resource stats have no effect on the success of a trap or a camp kit.





  • How do you fish?

I reccomend reading Volstead's Power Fishing Guide. You can forage bait for a fishing pole, and an artisan should be able to craft the pole itself. You drop the bait into the fishing pole like you would a container, equip it, select "Start fishing" from the radial menu (while standing within 5 meters of a lake or stream, facing towards it) and select the "tug" commands until you have caught a fish.





  • How do you make factory schematics for traps / camps / camo kits?

Using a weapon, droid and general item crafting station, you can select "make a factory schematic" at the end of the crafting process. You can set the number of items that it will generate before stopping. An Equipment factory is necessary for this, and you will need to deposit the resources used in crafting the schematic into the "ingredients hopper." You also need to deposit power into the structure.





  • Why can't I milk this creature?

You must have the ability to mask your scent, obtained at 2/0/0/0 Scout, to be able to "calm" the creature and milk it. You must stay close to the creature during the entire process, or else you will have to repeat it.





  • What are the different effects of Scout / Ranger traps?





  • What is the relationship between traps, my level, my trapping skill modand the enemy's CL?

If your CL (ungrouped) is below your quarry's CL, then you have no chance of successfully using a trap against it. As you gain boxes in the trapping lines of Scout and Ranger, you will be able to trap higher-level creatures.





  • What professions look for what stats to be high in an organic resource? (I don't like this question, but it is asked quite often nonetheless.)

Armorsmith: SR and OQ


Bio-Engineer: OQ, PE, and FL


Chef: OQ and FL





  • How do I use a harvest and trap throwing droid?

The harvesting droid has a selection of "harvest interest" on its radial menu. After you select that, you can pick hide, meat or bone for it to harvest. Then, after this is set, you can select from the droid commands "Harvest." After you select that, it will display a red question mark over the droid's head. Now, you type the letter or word that it will respond to by harvesting when you use it in spatial.


I do not know about the trap throwing droid, myself.





  • Do I have to loot a creature to obtain the components they can drop, and if so does that mean that I cannot harvest them?

Yes you must loot it. No, you can still harvest the creature even if you loot it.





Hope this helps get you started. It's all I could think of.

I'm in the process of revamping my Ranger Resource List.

And yes, I didnt cancel and am still here... lol. Also, have been known to wander about Kash some.

Owen, do you want us to post bug questions/work-arounds too, or just info about features that are working?

For example:

Q: Why won't rescue work?
A: Bug: Rescue requires /peace, which was removed in the CU.

That is certainly a legit question, I would think.

How can I make the act of harvesting easier?
Make a macro with /harvest 'resource'; /loot;

A mini-guide on using harvesting and trapping droids.

Something about what camps do: heal wounds, can't heal BF, don't repel agro, resources needed for crafting, where you gain which camp.

Trap names, resources needed for crafting, effects, where gained in tree(s), not macroable, unless in a toolbar slot.

The ins and outs of tracking (100m bug, critter needs to have spawned, etc.)

CL Mod and what info you gain at each level.

Camo: how to use it (on yourself and others), resources needed and level gained.

Milk, filleting fish, and egg gathering is not dependant on any skill mod in any profession.

I will probably have more in the future (hey..you started it ).

Q: Why am I only harvesting one unit of a resource from a creature?

A: The resource is shifting and will be back to normal with new stats shortly. Try harvesting something else while you wait.

A few that come to mind:

Does Camo make me invisible to Players, and/or remove me from their radar?

What Combat prof goes best with Ranger? (maybe a rundown or pro/con for each profession?)

How can I get a resource recycler?

Does Ranger add to combat level?

How can I get MR when my xp is capped? (temporary, I know, but it is being asked a lot)

How do I make money?

What's the range on AreaTrack?
500 meter radius from your position.


What's the difference between Maskscent and Camoflauge?
Camo takes resources and is supposed to be stonger and work against NPCs.


Do enhanced clothing and skill enhancing attachments actually work?
Yes up to +25 on any one skill.


What do I do with the resource type of horn?


What's wrong with hotpants?

Does quality of resources affect traps, camps or camouflage?


Not on traps, not on camps, and it only affects the number of charges on camo.

Had to edit your message Rancorrider - when a resource is shifting, you get this message. You harvest only 1 unit from a creature when it is "skinny" - which is no longer the case while harvesting in caves.


I highlighted the message in Yellow because I'm pretty sure that's not the exact text, although it's darn close.

Q: Can a master ranger track further than a 0040 ranger?
A: No. /areatrack is granted at novice ranger. Range is a fixed/max number of 500m and does not increase with skill. Distance is only shown at tracking xx3x. Progression in the tracking tree only grants cumulative abilites:

Novice -- can track animals
0010 -- animals with compass direction
0020 -- animals & NPCs with compass direction
0030 -- animals & NPCs -- Compass direction and distance
0040 -- Animals, NPCs & Players -- Compass direction and distance
Master ranger - No additional benefits to the tracking skill




Q: What happened to the group harvest penalty?
A: The -40% penalty for creature harvesting while grouped was removed in Feb '05, and replaced with new rules for bonuses to harvesting while grouped.




Q: What's the maximum group bonus I can receive while grouped? Do I need to be with a ranger?
A: To receive the maximum bonus, yes. Bonuses only take into account the highest bonus in the group, and does not stack with multiple scouts or rangers. It does not take into account your level of scout/ranger, so a master ranger will only get +40% if there is another master ranger in the group.

Group Harvesting bonuses
+20% increase in creature harvesting while grouped.
+30% increase in creature harvesting while grouped with a Ranger.
+40% increase in creature harvesting while grouped with a Master Ranger.
NOTE: You must be within 64m of a group members to receive harvesting bonus.
