Well, I'm very close to "Master Ranger". Sounds good right? I'm having a hard time figuring out why I chose this profession. The /conceal command was compelling and so was the area track... The huge camps and the hope that the new traps would actually be worth something were a draw as well...
So far, every one of those abilities have turned out to be crap.
The area track is so limited it's almost useless... I can run around in my speeder in a big circle and find what area track sometimes misses. I've found that it seems the /areatrack misses things that aren't spawned. Perhaps it's me but the server seems so slow that the mobs don't spawn sometimes until I'm right on top of them. /areatrack will not show those mobs. I've done an area track and found nothing then gotten back on my speeder and gone 50 meters and suddenly my radar shows 2 nests of squills and dewbacks. Also, sometimes using /areatrack more than once in the same area will produce different results. One time I found a Kryte Dragon. I performed another area track AT THE SAME SPOT 5 seconds later and the Kryte Dragon was gone... The developers need to expand this skill so us rangers can actually find things more easily. Give me 1000 meters or more and make the scan pick up everything. I'm completely disappointed in this skill since I would assume this is how a ranger could possibly make money by finding hard to find animals and NPC's.
Traps are basically useless... Yeah I get a pretty good success rate but none of them are worth a crap. The mesh traps only root the animal for about 2 seconds... what a waste. All of the others seem to make very little difference in the battle. I've tried them in combination I've tried to dizzy a creature and then knock it down with my pistol malee attack (thinking it would keep the animal down for 20 seconds like when I'm dizzy and knocked down) but no... They pop back up in about 2 seconds. Put some reasoning in how these traps work and make them more useful!
Conceal seems worthless as well. Great you're concealed until you attack and then it's a waste. Give me 30 seconds of coneal while I'm attacking and it may be worth something. Also, GREAT, I get scouting points when I'm concealed and I run through an aggro mob... At Master Ranger I don't care about points....
Lastly the camps need to heal wounds faster! You have to sit in the camp for a few hours to get wounds healed. I might as well pop a smaller camp that takes less resources rather than using the HT base field camps... How about a way to heal battle fatigue?
All in all, I've been very disappointed in this class. I'll fill out to master ranger (need wayfaring IV) but will drop it immediately. The developers didn't think very creatively when they designed this class. If I can't be a kick butt commando or bounty hunter who does 6000 points of damage per attack give me something that makes me worthwhile in battle. The idea behind all of these skills sound pretty good but they are not powerful enough... I don't recommend Master Ranger to anyone! Instead go Bounty Hunter so you can make a difference in a group or by yourself. If you want to find animals get in your swoop and drive around in circles, you'll out "Ranger" a Master Ranger with ease... As my group mates continue to remind me when we hunt...
Bah!

This is why Ranger must become the stealth class of SW:G or it is dead. I hate being a pest but this one is crutial.

Why Master it though? I can see doing so if you're on a Hologrind, but it sounded more like you're just mastering to master it because originally you thought it would be fun. Unless you've got an unlimited source for Apprentice Points, or really care about the Badge for Mastery, I'd recommend not bothering spending the 620 to fill the last box.
Daily we discuss how things could be much better across the board. The issues you have are well known and well documented ones. It gets frustrating when you spend a great deal of time advancing a profession only to find out what still left needs to be tweaked or out-right fixed. That's why I'm glad each Correspondent has a Top 5 and even State of the Profession list. These are community-driven documents that can provided folks both within, and outside, of a profession a glimpse of what's good and what's not about it.
You're not wrong at all in your concerns. Mask Scent is almost as good as Camoflauge, Terrain Negotiation in Wayfaring only affects crawl speed (which matters mostly only to Rifleman), advanced traps are arguably useless, Tracking doesn't work on stuff that isn't spawned and camps are less than what they could be
One either likes being a Ranger or they don't. As with a series of skill boxes, Rangers are like all professions. They are incomplete, buggy, have some stuff that works differently than intended and isn't arguably as "elite" as it should be. But what does work is something some people really enjoy. The Ranger/Rifleman love the crawl speed. Being able to camoflauge other players makes Camo Kits have some use. The coolness of the advanced camps makes them worth pulling even just for kicks. Tracking is great in specific cases where you are defending your city from player or NPC incursion (destroy missions and the POI system negate it's usefulness for mobs in my opinion). Sonic Pulse and Flash Bomb are great for specific cases where you have a few front-line melee fighters who'd like to get hit less
Just one thing though. I do disagree with you on the Mesh trap. It has worked for as long as 20 seconds on mobs for me. That's more than enough time to finish them off from a safe distance/ideal range.
Is it worth Mastering? For you, probably not. But everyone's different. I personally think it works incredibly well with Bounty Hunter weapons and Novice Medic (you wait for a camp to naturally heal your wounds?! That must take forever). I don't care about the Investigation line. I can track just fine already

We have people all the time that post the same concerns as you. I will make it short but sweet.....read what Darniaq said. If you don't like it, don't do it. If you are in for the badge or the former hologrind then please finish and move along. If you would like to help improve the class please post your ideas for improvement, but telling us things we already know (most of the rangers, at least) adds clutter to the forum.

Read the outdoorsman proposal. If you like it, then check back with this profession later on. Hopefully some of the stuff in that proposal will become reality.

Ya know, I just master the other day and like the devs said, I viewed myself as just a "super scout". But after reading Holocron's post the other day, I'm pumped! This is gonna be one helluva profession.

Wow...for your first post you complain...
thats a great way to endear yourself to the ranger community. Sorry you dont like being a ranger, play something you have fun with.
Im sure that most of the ranger community will agree that we have a lot of issues like the ones you brought up, however Rangers are currently Combat Support and not a combat profession.
take care of yourself, and hope you find a combination that you like and have fun with.

Actually, I'm wondering if he's referring to Holocron's "Ranger Feedback" thread stickied atop?
If so, be warned: That was written in August, and we've collectively long since stopped holding our breaht

Unfortunately I didn't read these forums before spending a few months getting to the Master Ranger realm... I should have. I would guess it's normal for someone who loves the idea of the Ranger class and what it should be able to do, to be upset that once they get the "skill" to do /areatrack or some other Ranger skill, they find out it really isn't what they thought or as powerful as it should be to be useful.
I don't mean to be a downer on the class... I picked it for a reason and that is because of what you're "supposed" to be able to do as a Ranger. Since most of those things are almost ineffective, it seems a waste. Perhaps I can warn others from assuming the things that I did when getting into this class and they'll choose another class first and wait for Ranger to be fixed.
I like the ideas put on the table for the class but have seen that they've been ideas for quite some time with very little movement from the devs. I'll admit, I'm a noob to the game. I also understand that these types of games have a tendency to evolve over time and really hope that in this case, they put some attention to the Ranger class sometime soon.
Lastly, I don't remember saying that I don't have fun. Playing the game is very fun. It's just frustrating that clear bugs with /areatrack and the fact that the devs have CLEARLY not adjusted the game to take the swoops into account and all the other things I and many others have complained about have not yet been addressed.
This reminds me of the first Massively Multiplayer game I played called WWII Online.... Anyone remember that game? Same type of thing. Nothing was balanced, what was promised upon ship date was not there and the idea was to get a revenue stream coming in quickly which in turn would fund the rest of the development of the product. From what I know, that product took a huge nose dive. This one will probably make it but they've got to start outsourcing their development to India or something to get it done in a timely manner... (hehe can't wait for the US devs to chime in on this one). I'm kidding of course... But they've got to step up the pace at any rate...

You know, I think I see your point now, you want to start being "squeeky" so that we get some "oil". I'd rather wait on that, this board has been one of the few whiner-free zones. Trust in Nraas, there are threads he stickied for this sort of thing.
