Because you use words like "sucks" and "blows".

Non of what you say is news to us... we are fully aware of the "issues" our profession has, yet we are still here. You clearly don't want to be, so .. go away. Feel free to come back when things work better for you. We just don't really want to hear what's wrong with our profession, because we already know. If you have some new idea of how to improveany aspect of the Ranger class, then please share it with us, but if all you want to do is complain about how things are right now... well... then, please keep it to yourself.

Don't take it to seriously No-Ni.

The people here know they aren't getting what they deserve for the points they've spend and deep down they are just as frustrated as you are. However, most here a "hardcore" rangers. The boxes could be empty and they'd still put in the points and the XP to get Master Ranger above their head

Their ranger pride and NRaas keep them from focusing on the negative aspects though.

The fact that Holocron's mostly empty promise thread is still here shows how dedicated people are to just stick it out and wait for the better, you just have to be careful not to remeind them too much about how long they've been 'sticking'

You aren't being pegged a whiner, IMHO. But you have to expect some negativity when your subject reads to those playing Rangers as "YOUR Class Blows"... no matter your intention.

As for those who have nothing but insults to throw at you: you have an Ignore List function on these forums, use it!

Having said that, I honestly think it's time some people did start making a bit of noise. Combat types always make noise on the forums and guess what? They're devoting an entire publish (or more) to totally "revamp" combat. Seems to me, he who screams loudest gets the most attention.

I hope my earlier points weren't misconstrued No-ni. I just attempted to highlight two things:

  • We've discussed these issues many many times
  • We are here regardless
The "squeaky wheel" concept works ok sometimes. Unfortunately, nobody here that isn't a red name has any actual control on what the Devs actually work on. And what the Devs work on is decided by a much larger slide rule than any one profession defines.

Rangers function already. We have more stuff that works than doesn't. It could all be much better, but we're way ahead of a few other professions.

Basically, yes, that's excusing the Devs of their current inattention towards Rangers (save the Camps). It's just professionalism. They have limited resources and have to prioritize things. But it's also because I've been a few other professions. Lemme tell ya, I'd rather have Rangers be what they currently are for a few more months if that means Droid Engineers get some usefulness, Musicians get a few more songs, Tailors can actually become a growth opportunity and the Galactic Civil War can be made to matter more.

As we have been doing, we will gladly maturely recommend changes, tweaks and fixes as long as we're heard. We have Nraas who makes us heard, and by all indications, does so in a rational and patient manner. We have gotten some attention already due to this.

I've played just about every MMOG there is (except The Sims Online... you couldn't pay me enough). Every game has its issues. Every class is imbalanced. Every world is busted in some way. The squeaky wheel may get the grease. Or they may cause the forums to be shut down because they had long since lost their ability to promote useful information.

Patience is rough, believe me. I quit Droid Engineer, Musician and Tailoring because I ran outta patience waiting for what others are waiting for now. I've quit other professions just because I wanted something different.
Fred_Skinner said it best: Rangers in SWG are sort of a belief more than an actual uber set of functions. It's not that we're a bunch of raging fanbois with starry-eyed visions who hang on every erg of info from on high. It's that we can already do some of what we want to do here, in a system that does actually work as one expects it to.

And that's more than what can be said for some other's.

Combat classes get attention not because they are the loudest and squeakiest, but because combat and the classes involved in combat account for the majority of steady, long-term subscriptions, both directly and indirectly. If the combat model doesn't work and turns those players off, it's unlikely they will ditch a combat class to become an entertainer and keep their subscriptions. Chances are better they'll cancel their account and move on to a game that offers the exciting, competitive combat situations they crave.

When a particular population is what drives the product's revenue, it's going to get attention.

Unfortunately, statistics support the notion that all of us Rangers could cancel our accounts and nary make a dent in their monthly P&L. The only way to move Ranger up the priority list would be to make it something the majority of players want to be. And why would you (as the developer) invest time (=money) into altering the way a class functions, only to make it be yet another "must fix" combat class. From the development angle, it makes morefinancial sense to leave itas is and hope the complainers drop the profession and pick up something that "works" and keep their accounts.

Which leaves it up to Rangers to take it on themselves to make the profession interesting.

so why produce a game with 32 different professions.. might as well just have 3

guns shooters, sword wavers and people that make guns and swords

no sorry can't accept that arguement .. there has to be more to the game than that

No-Ni

I after reading your clarification post, I mostly agree with you. How the ranger is defined and described in the books/ websites/ etc do not actually live up to the reality of being a ranger in swg. Point well taken.

However, like the others here, we have worked really hard to keep these forums free from the kind of standard forums where insults on professions, individuals and ideas are kept at a minimum. I have posted ideas that have been shot down faster than the speed of light, other times they've sparked new ideas in a creative way that is constructive.

My advice to you is to refrain from putting such charged words in the titles...that kinda riles us up a bit we have a good community here and a great correspondant We are a passionate bunch for better or for worse, most of us love being a ranger, some of us merely like being a ranger and others are just passing through.

In anycase, good hunting

Hey Rangers,

We are all in the same boat here. He is just pointing the obvious way that we all at times about our current situation. Granted I agree that that kind of opening post is uncalled for, but us as Rangers, most of us Master, we should conduct ourselves with a little more dignity.

No-ni, you are obviously new which you stated already. But I am sure if you keep any part of the Ranger profession, you will still be a part of these boards. So in time you will notice that almost every ranger here is very passionate about the this profession, and are trying very hard to be heard. But if we give up the profession, then no one will hear us. If you go to the other boards you will see posts like "I'm leaving, this sucks", and "Why can't I do this, why can't I do that?". I am not saying that it doesn't happen here, but it is rare. You made some very excellent points in your post, which most of us here are aware of already. But please don't start of your post in that manner, they see that first and probably add another point for killing us.

In a way I'm glad that you did say what you did. What do you think Rangers? Maybe a wake up call is in order? Should we shout a bit louder?

You are always welcome to post here bro, jusy watch that first step. Lots of good people here. I am sorry that the profession is not up to what it should/could be. But I am sure along your journey, you will meet one of us, and we will gladly help if asked.

May the road always rise to meet you.

The other Elders of the forum have of course already stated why most of are here, there is no need for me to say anything further regarding that.

As for yourself No-Ni, I'm sorry you don't find the current Ranger profession appealing. We allhope the developers will improveon it in the future tomatch our expectations, but for the moment it would be best to move on, and come back at a later time.

Thanks for dropping by.

Your theory is sound, but they didn't make a game with breadth because they had nothing better to do Given the license and the development costs involved, they could have made this EQ in space. With Wookiees. And they'd arguably have as many subscribers at least. Instead of 32 fundamentally different ways of interacting with a virtual space, they could have just done 14 shades of the same beat-stuff-up-forever you get with other MMOGs.

They didn't because both SOE and LA have product lines, and within those lines are already games that offer that

So instead, they saw the "other" type of MMORPG. The Ultima Online (UO) persistent virtual world with self-directed goals. They found out who the "doers" on that project were and brought them here. To give them not 14 ways to kill stuff. But 32 ways to livea virtual life.

Combat classes get the splash, because they affect the most things. They consume the content quickest. They introduce the most new money into the system. They move the most money in the game through constant purchases. They are the GCW and Jedi combined, just about the two biggest selling points this game has to the layman.

But UO functioned the same way. Non-combat skill templates that worked were second-prioritied for months and years. But because they worked they didn't need the constant hand holding and tweaking.

What's easier? To fix bugs in a crafting sequence or to balance a zillion variables in a hybrid realtime/turn-based combat mechanic that can conceivable involve multiple groups of 20 origination points of death dealing and between both mobs and players?

The former gets pushed back because the latter goes in waves of "omg the game is busted unless this is fixed" to "it's unbalanced." The Devs aren't dumb. They know combat balance is nigh impossible in a changing world. They also know that pure balance is boring anyway. But they've got to chase down the potential game breakers and then role out the long time bugs that patient players have waited for fixes.

You think that the huge retrofit to Chefs had anything to do with their ability to swing a spoon in a fight?

Ok, Ok... I appologize to all the Rangers out there for having the gall to chime in with my opinion on the subject. I know it's been said time and time again as I have read those posts, or most of them anyway...

Perhaps I believe keeping it in front of the developers is a good idea. For those of you who have pride in the fact that you've waited patiently with your Master Ranger title for these things to be fixed, I applaud you. This must truly be your calling in life. Some would say "Patience is a virtue". I've always said "What's often mistaken for patience is simply a lack of energy." Or simply patience is for losers... Take your pick.

Personally, I'd be happy if the developers just focused on the bugs... The nice-to-haves can follow later. Make /areatrack work for unspawned mobs and I'd actually be pacified for a while. Stronger traps would also be nice since I'm guessing it would be a quick change. The rest that we've all been talking about and I've read in the holocron report all sound great and should all still be put in place. I'm just looking for but show us some love a little at a time...
