Other than the fact that it is currently a Ranger skill, why shouldn't BH get NPC and PC tracking? And on that note, why shouldn't they get NPC and PC traps?

Don't worry, I am not going to do anything rash, and this post does not indicate any upcomming changes, I just wanted to start the discussion...

Can we get Droid Tracking skills and Lightning Rifles from BH?

Should Entertainers be able to make camps?
Should Doctors get rescue and harvest bonus?
Should Commandos get camo?

From what I gather, us Rangers use tracks, scents, signs of damage, reactions of animals, smoke etc etc all these things to build up a picture of what is around.

Bounty Hunters are given information by spy networks and informants and hence are unable to glean the information using the innate skills those accustomed to operating in the wilderness possess.

Bounty Hunters techincally could obtain computerised tracking systems, but they would have difficulty in translating the subtle signs of life in the way an experienced ranger can.

As for traps, the ways of creatures are certainly different to those of humans. Rangers have experience in understanding how animals react and behave; their habitats and dangers. Bounty Hunters similarly understand how people react to pressure, to being hunted; how people deal when their heart is racing.

Rangers should always be able to use creature based traps more effectively as a result of this, and if player/npc based traps became available, I would say a Bounty Hunter would possess greater skill with it, whilst a Ranger may have a lesser, but regardless, some transferable skill with them.

As far as trapping goes, I personally think everyone should get NPC and PC traps (i.e. even a Novice Scout). I see no reason why I can cause a rancor to stop in his tracks but that pesky Storm Trooper is immune. I can understand a reduced chance to hit an NPC or player (they might try to dodge) but I see no reason why I can't try.

Tracking is something that requires extensive knowledge of the wilderness. BHs specialize on hunting down and killing humanoids. They get droids to find their prey with specialized biological sensing. They do not study the wilderness (i.e. they get no more scouting xp to advance past Master Scout) and do not know how to determine what sort of entities have been disturbing the local environment. They take the scouting tree to learn how to survive alone (their prey might be hiding in the mud flats of Dathomir and they can't let that stop them) and how to plan ambushes (traps). They do not take Scout to learn about the wilderness. Rangers are specializing in hunting, exploring, trappingand wilderness survival. They are focusing on the ability to go out alone into the wilderness and do what is needed. They know when something else is around because the wilderness is their home.

If a BH wants Ranger skills, they should dabble in Ranger. They can become experts in some parts of Scouting in addition to being Masters of finding and killing their marks. But finding and killing marks should not improve their abilities in the wilderness. The average BH will try to learn enough about surviving in the wilds so that they can find and kill their marks. Any more specializing in the wilds is equivalent to taking Ranger skills.

I think the point of this thread is to discuss which skills are questionably ours atm and could possibly fit into another class just as easily. You have to admit that many of our skills could very easily be in other professions. The only thing that is truely ours imo is the harvesting bonus and that is only while the older image of ranger,as the outdoorsman, persists.

Same reason we can't get simple healing and ability to use a survey tool. Same reason we can't get any kind of basic taming. Same reason we don't have some smattering of weak force powers.

If they mean to change the BH to get "tracking" like we do consider this: They don't read the foot prints like we do to find them. IF they can come up with a credable way of tracking that does not involve this method, so be it. If they do: then the tracking line has to go to the Scouting trees to do it. However, we have advanced knowledge of our environment. Go back to the BH's and tell them we get to use a survey tool at some point then, because it makes just as much sense.

Ranger is not a profession. It's a lifestyle.

You don't think that BH have the job of tracking down PCs and NPCs?

Should Entertainers be able to make camps? They have cantinas.
Should Doctors get rescue and harvest bonus? Maybe Combat Medics should get Rescue!
Should Commandos get camo? Commandos blow crap up, they don't sneak around.

While these would be helpful to the professions you mention, they aren't necessary for them to do their job

Great answers so far. I was just having random thoughts this morning as to why we should have any skills that affect PCs and NPCs...we ARE creature hunters. I know that many moons ago, the BH wanted traps and tracking for their marks, and I never really saw why they shouldn't get it, but the Rangers were cranky. Admittedly, it is hard to let BH have any skills that belong to another profession, but why should we be PC and NPC hunters when that is what a BH does? Mainly, I wanted a new discussion thread to keep the boredom and flames from setting in.

Why Bounty Hunters should not get NPC or PC traps

1) Trapping is the ability to deliver a chemical/ biological agent to a target contained in a semi-penetrating shell.

2) The scout traps that we throw are specifically designed to penetrate different types of hide and either inject a chemical/ biological agent (Phenacine Dart, Stink Bomb) or to explode and cover the animal in an agent for a desired effect. (Adhesive Mesh, Glow-Wire Trap) or to do direct damage and cause a temporary state for the target (Sharp Bone Spur)

3) These scout traps are effective and useful in the right situations... however, they are designed for use on non-sentient, non-multitasking creatures.

4) For a trap to work on a sentient, there will have to be a difference in design and skill. For example.. a rancor is sitting around chewing on some poor guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Ranger comes around and decides to take down this lumbering brute. Upon combat initiation, the Rancor is neither smart enough nor dexterous enough to avoid the trap being hurled at him. Sometimes, by sheer chance, the trap fails to hit the mark (it hit a particularly chitonous section of hide) other times, the trap delivers the desired effect. Chances to hit are modified by the trapping skill.

5) For NPC's or PC's... these are sentient beings that wear armor and clothing for protection, train in weapons for offense and defense, and can obtain certain skills to be more effective at avoiding damage or delivering damage. The trap therefore, must change design with the new type of threat. The traps thrown must be able to penetrate armor. How can a trap be designed to penetrate armor with such effectiveness as composite (a trap launcher... but i digress) With increased velocity and a shaped charge, you can blow through most anything. Therefore, the PC/ NPC traps must have a different delivery system yet contain the same biological/ chemical agents that cause the effects. The shaped charge may not be within the Ranger's realm of knowledge, so the Ranger searches out a Weaponsmith to make for him/ her a shaped charge which is used to blow through armor.

6) This advanced knowledge of a delivery system cannot be perfected with only a rudimentary knowledge of basic trapping and design. Only the Rangers, who have spent their entire professional career studying lethality and effectiveness of traps can create and effectively use traps of such high quality.

Someone already did tracking... of which I entirely agree

Yeah Calc. Boba Fett had a T-Gun. This shoots out a rope that wraps around his target to trap it. He did it to Luke in ROTJ, but Luke used his lightsaber to break free.

Gah!!!!

dont get me started on Jango and Boba Fett... they were losers....

If you can name one success of either of the two Fett Failures, I will give you a melon.

Jango: Failed to kill Amidala twice
Jango: Failed to kill Obi-Wan in a gun fight
Jango: Failed to kill Obi-Wan in a space fight
Jango: Only when Anakin was surrounded, was able to subdue a padawan
Jango: Killed a newb jedi
Jango: Got himself rolled by a bol-type critter
Jango: Lost his head 3 seconds vs. Mace

Boba: Failed to kill Han
Boba: Tracked (but did not capture or deliver) Han
Boba: Failed to kill Chewie
Boba: Failed to kill Luke
Boba: Failed to kill Leia
Boba: Failed to kill Lando
Boba: Punked by a stray shot and ended up in the sarlaac pit
(the fett family movie career is officially over)

Ok... and this is why they were able to use the trap guns... and poison darts,

They both ground up to trapping IV and got the title trap master... but since they werent rangers, they still sucked at it.

hope this helps

I agree with almost everything you say here. The only thing that I would argue is that penetrating the skin of a krayt dragon would be harder than piercing composite (but both would require extensive trapping knowledge to do effectively). The hard part of hitting a sentient being isthe skill of the opponent. A creature will often blindly charge at a player, not really trying to dodge. A sentient being would see a thrown trap coming and try to dodge it. And they might try to avoid a stationary trap. Breaking through the armor of a player shouldn't be any harder than piercing the skin of a Rancor. And coating a target shouldn't really depend on the armor at all.

The extra trapping knowledge would make you understand how to best use your traps to pierce armor and how to anticipate the enemy's reaction. This is indicated by the normal trapping skill. It would also let you use more complex traps (for instance, traps with a better chance to hit or traps with an AoE). This is like the extra slots available to players with better trapping skills in the modular trap idea. If a BH were tothrow a scout trap at a player, hewould have a small chance of hitting the player and piercing the armor. A Master Ranger would see a weak point in that same player's armor and aim for it, giving him a greater chance of success with the same trap. And that same Master Ranger could further improve his chances with a trap designed to be harder to see and that would pierce the armor. But I don't see why that BH (or even a Novice Scout)shouldn't be allowed to try and get lucky.
