Ranger Archive

I'm just wondering what everyone's idea of a Ranger is, so I want to ask: What are some of your favorite Archetype Rangers? Was there a Ranger character that inspired you to be a Ranger?

Two of my favorites are Aragorn from LOTR and the "Ghosts" from Ghost Recon.

I guess I'm asking partly in fun, but also cause I'm wondering what direction our class should go in, IF we ever get a Ranger revamp.

I consider The outdoorsman proposal an outstanding accomplishments of this board and it's so far the only thing the Devs have really looked at, but is that how the majority of Rangers envision us?

When the outdoorsman was created it was done in mind with the Creature Centric view that we thought the devs were pushing on us, but things have changed since then. The Devs have since stated they want the GCW to be the focus of SWG in the future, so does a creature centric Ranger really fit into that?

I personally see us more diverse than just a hunter or outdoorsman. Good hunting skills are simply second nature to a Ranger, we should always be good hunters but that doesn't mean we can't be the Paramilitary type of Ranger too.

I think we should let Master Scouts be the "Master Scouts" and make Ranger something more. A Ranger should be the Explorer and the Guerilla Soldier. The scout who learns to take his skills to the next level, to utilize his knowledge and synthesize new combat tactics that only a Ranger could.

I know this may sound kind of stupid, but my favorite "Ranger" for lack of a better word, is Steve Irwin. Yes the Crocidile Hunter. Laugh as you may, but think it about. Look how much this guy knows, how much time he out inthe open, and how he treats people.

I say this because I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife while I was in Australia a few years ago. A kind, gracious person that knows what the hell he is talking about.

So I guess my perfect Ranger would be a crossof Steve Irwin and Aragorn.

LOL! I would LOVE to see Steve Erwin in the star wars universe! Rancor-wrestler! Someone actually did a really great spoof home-video of "Boba Fett. Jedi Hunter." I'll see if I can find it!

I'm not quite a ranger yet (will hopefully hit Novice Ranger this weekend)...but when I think of Rangers, I tend to think more of a Robin Hood type.

I could see a group of rangers - camouflaged, hiding in the trees as a group of Imperials or Rebels approach on their speeder bikes. The rangers throw a net over the group, swing down and start beating the hell out of them with sticks. Then loot all of their money, and give it to the poor (Entertainers?)

Wonder if I could find a tailor to make me some tights...

actually, i'm right there with you... i remember once when i was trying to justify "poison resistance" and "creature dodge" to myself, i thought "you know... like steve irwin with a snake... he knows what they are going to do before they do it..."

on topic though, probably my favorite rangers were from tolkien - but you can't count aragorn (he was a master ranger, master squad leader, master swordsman, master doctor... too hard to pick out the ranger in all that mess)... so i'll go with halbarad - sneaks up on an army at night with a pack of rangers, walks up to their leaders and says "howdy there" (did i mention they were on horses?)...

also gotta go with the mountain man on this... don't know how many of those movies i had to sit through as a kid, but any mountain man is a ranger...

ireally dig the lone ranger...even with his in your face, "i saved the day" attitude and slightly federalistic creed...

Ranger Smith. Keeping picnic baskets safe from Yogi is no small task.

I'd have to say Aragorn and the Dúnedain are the closest to what I see as being the 'ideal' fantasy ranger. They could survive in the wild alone for extended periods, they were expert travelers, they "were believed to have strange powers of sight and hearing, and to understand the language of beasts and birds", and they were capable warriors. (I was really diappointed the rest of the rangers were left out of the Return of the King). They protected the northlands from all the assorted evils of the world in secret, seeking neither riches or glory, simply doing what was right.
