I really have nothing better to do than read the posts and watch TV. I am in school, and my laptop is not much better than using a chisel and stone. This is the first of 3 posts maybe the DEV's will read, and see how much we love this profession, and are willing to stay.

What was your defining moment as a Ranger? The moment you knew this is what you wanted to be in SWG.

My moment was about 2 weeks ago. I was hunting on Dathomir, and started to look around. I jumped in my x34 and started heading into the darkness. I came right over the top of this peak and the moon was out like a big glowing light, covered half my view. I jumped out of the speeder and stood there. Just listening to the quiet. I have a screen of it, it is very cool. I pulled out a basic camp and stayed there for awhile, enjoying my own company. After few minutes, a BE wandered by and asked what I was doing. I just told them I was enjoying the moon while I sort some things in my pack. (I did get a "wow" at the placement of my camp). They asked me if I could help them get back to the Outpost, with all the creepies out there they didn't want to make the trek alone. I pulled out a couple of Cammo kits, applied it to the both of us and of we went on foot. (Thier vehicle was disabled). The conceal broke once or twice, but we made it back just fine.

The moon, the wilderness, and being able to help a person. I decided that the hologrind was not for me. If they would just give us something that defines us a bit more, it will make it that much more enjoyable.

This is a tough one... there have been so many times I've thought to myself, <<Boy doI love being a Ranger...>>

There are a couple that come to mind, but there is one in particular I think is representative of the best - One time I was on Dantooine, searching for the Rebel base (before the POI tabdrastically reduced the merit of exploration), and instead I found the highest peak on the planet. Just set up a camp, and watched the sun go down while a pack of Grauls romped nearby, not bothered by my unobtrusive presence.

It was this that reminded me of the unique majesty of not only the Ranger profession, but of the unique breed of people who make up the Ranger community - the kind of people who can enjoy the sunset without surveying it for chemical resources, and appreciate graul maulers without killing them for XP, or taming them as pets. I'm proud to be one of those people, and proud to wear any one of the Ranger tags.

That's easy: "Did you see the size of his camp? It was like a city!" I was asked that in beta 2 after running around on Corellia.

I logged into the EC tunnel and immediately heard a group in /gu getting wiped on a Lodizal attempt due to adds. I quickly /auc'd for a port to Iceclad, hit SoW and Lev, tracked Lodizal, got agro and kited him out into the ocean. When the original team finished CR, I pulled him to shore for the kill. Coincidentally, my background MP3 player started running "Holding Out For A Hero" just as I hit Iceclad.

Coming in a very close second would be the time when my group's Shaman went LD on a triple pull in Valor. I took over as CC, root parking, and slows via Earthcaller. Once the mobs were slowed I jolted agro back onto the tank and went back to DPS with AM3.

Oh yeah, that was in EQ. When the devs actually define Ranger as something other than Scout 2.0, we'll talk about defining moments in SWG.

I wanted to be one going into the game. My defining moment occurs often, heh. Although it was probably when I headed out to my Guild Hall with a few buddies of mine. And another of our members was heading in from a different direction. He died twice trying to get there, yet I managed to lead two people past spawns and through passages with ease and even trap those that came after us.

The hall was and still is 5km or so North of Coronet, and we're very proud to have a city there now. Living atop a plateau away from it all lets you sink into all that is life in SWG.

Further moments of "wanting" and remembering I'm a Ranger come nowadays on Dantooine, seeing the towns all over the place and not being able to run accross the side of the map without running into a few. I had a moment there once before Cities, taking my mount up from the Imperial outpost to the Force Caves. Running accross an Untrained Force Weilder and sending my pet on him, knowing I'd have never found this guy if I hadn't ventured this far out, and I wouldn't have survived this far out without my skill to survive there.

Good idea of a post though..heh.

Hm. I too wanted to be a Ranger going in. I'd borrowed a friend's Prima strategy guide and planned my character out for a week prior.

Some of my earliest defining moments were quantified simply by being able to cross any terrain fearlessly. As a Novice Scout, I ran from Kor Vella to Tyrena. I was still using a CDEF rifle. I made it there without being afraid for my life. I also made several treks to our pre-player city city of Keris Tava, at that time located in the region between two rivers North and East of Kor Vella. Many of my guildmates wouldn't make the run unless they absolutely had to, because of the massive amounts of red-con aggressive critters in the area.

But probably my truest moment, asa Ranger, came on Endor. This was before they nerfed Endor so that you could get missions that you could realistically solo... I was getting missions for 40k as a single Ranger, because there *wasn't* anything lower. Then I'd go get them. Much of my success, I'll admit, came from being a Rifleman with Conceal Shot.. But knowing that I could get there, that when I did get there and got wounded that I didn't have to worry that there weren't ever any medics or entertainers around because my camps would heal my wounds.. Being able to stay away from civilization for literal days at a time.. That's what being a Ranger is about, to me.

One of my earliest defining moments was as a 0-0-0-3 Ranger (hey, I like Traps ). Three others and I are hunting Humbabas (before we were all uber) and they just kept coming. It turns out one of the group had the lair on target the whole time (it was a looong time ago). I just kept warning-shotting some, Adhesive Meshing the others and Sonic Pulsing the ones on the main tank. I felt like an EQ Druid. Not exactly the best method for crowd control, but within SWG, it's just about the only tools available (except for the stance-changing shots).

I enjoy Rangering more from the perspective of crowd controlling mobs than one taking them out altogether. Killing them is easy. That's what advanced combat is for. Rangers could definitely use some more combat abilities (a general accuracy mod would be nice, as would things defined in Outdoorsman and the 'I'm not an Outdoorsman' thread). But I don't think I need to hunt more effectively. Combat here is already too easy. If that changes, good. But in general, I want to control the situation more than just go off to farm resources.

It's little wonder my favorite classes are the EQ Bard and the DAoC Skald I like Subtlety.

Not really a defining moment, but definetly a confirming one:

I was out last night with a buddy, just "Rollin', Strollin', and Critter Controllin'" as I usually phrase it.

After we killed our 3rd rogue faamba, we had a solo player ask to join our little group because he "heard faamba's were next to impossible for small groups".

Two more dead faambas later, we picked up another 2 members to the group. They had been hanging at the edge of the action for the last couple of hours, just watching the show. Once I popped a Field Base camp, they came over to check it out.

Nothing really big, but it was still a fun night, and all the "nice camp" and "hey! areatrack us another faamba" comments made me feel pretty good.

Well, my swoop had just disappeared out from under me because the wind blew wrong or something, when I came up to a group of people fighting droidekas on Lok. Each of them were down to about 50% wounds, so I assumed they were in some horrendous shape, all unable to put their armor back on and getting killed often. They had a doc with them, but apparently no one could pop up a camp.

So I offered to throw down some hot Field Base action so they could get back up to snuff. They declined and kept fighting. It looked like the doctor was the only thing keeping them going because he revived the other two a number of times. Finally it looked like they were slowing down and I offered again. This time they took me up on it.

When they got to the base I was all excited to be able to help some people with my unique abilities. I had my fizzz out too, because I hadn't yet dropped entertainer completely. I was READY.

They got to the camp, pulled up their swoops, said thanks and left. I asked the doctor where they were going and he said, "The nearest town is only 3km away, where I can heal us back a lot faster and take care of BF. Why would we waste time in a camp?"

(Not my best moment, but I feel that it was defining.)

Ouch.

And of course now that they're going to remove the camppart ofvehicle use in the wilds, well...

Why bother at all?

yeah, let me just fold up my speeder and put it in my pocket...... oh wait.... am i the only person that plays with the thought that if you are going to use something (pets, droids, vehicles) that you should pull them out and leave them out, and not pick them up and pull them out all the time just because it is "more convenient?"

maybe i am strange, but i feel that if i am going to pull out my gurreck, i am not going to put it away just because it can't keep up with my speeder. and i will leave my speeder out and /pet my gurreck until it lays down.

oops, got a little off topic there didn't i? but the point still remains.

Point taken, but I happen to agree with you.

MY point was with the loss of that requirement, and the fact that camps don't heal BF, and don't provide any REAL benefit or incentive to dancers, musicians, and healers, to practice their craft while in a camp, they now serve little purpose. Yes they heal, but so does the cantina and the hospital. And, they both heal faster, as well as better.

I know about the modular/enhanced camp proposal, I believe in it. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it be implemented is all.

As for vehicles, I think more people would leave them out if they didn't decay as rapidly, and if they didn't cost so much to repair. But, getting those two things changed has less of a chance than getting the modular/enhanced camps put in the game.
