Um... I don't want you all to think that I was whining. That really happened. I just thought it was "defining" because it's never really gone any better with camps. For me at least, and it's good to see that others have had better experiences.

Well, my swoop had just disappeared out from under me because the wind blew wrong or something, when I came up to a group of people fighting droidekas on Lok. Each of them were down to about 50% wounds, so I assumed they were in some horrendous shape, all unable to put their armor back on and getting killed often. They had a doc with them, but apparently no one could pop up a camp.

So I offered to throw down some hot Field Base action so they could get back up to snuff. They declined and kept fighting. It looked like the doctor was the only thing keeping them going because he revived the other two a number of times. Finally it looked like they were slowing down and I offered again. This time they took me up on it.

When they got to the base I was all excited to be able to help some people with my unique abilities. I had my fizzz out too, because I hadn't yet dropped entertainer completely. I was READY.

They got to the camp, pulled up their swoops, said thanks and left. I asked the doctor where they were going and he said, "The nearest town is only 3km away, where I can heal us back a lot faster and take care of BF. Why would we waste time in a camp?"

(Not my best moment, but I feel that it was defining.)

I think for me there were always the moments where i was soloing, be it creeping up on a target to examine its weakness in damage type before using whatever rifle to conceal shot the target or to sneak up to mutant rancors to sample them with no combat abilities what-so-ever.

I think for me at least, it was the entire experience of it i guess, soloing, going out, living in the wild, hunting and getting dirty. surviving. watching great scenery while doing this, truely epic moments.

All these are emotive aspects of course and i look forward to more practical implimentations as suggested in the concept of the outdoorsman

My moment was about 2 weeks ago. I was hunting on Dathomir, and started to look around. I jumped in my x34 and started heading into the darkness. I came right over the top of this peak and the moon was out like a big glowing light, covered half my view. I jumped out of the speeder and stood there. Just listening to the quiet. I have a screen of it, it is very cool. I pulled out a basic camp and stayed there for awhile, enjoying my own company. After few minutes, a BE wandered by and asked what I was doing. I just told them I was enjoying the moon while I sort some things in my pack. (I did get a "wow" at the placement of my camp). They asked me if I could help them get back to the Outpost, with all the creepies out there they didn't want to make the trek alone. I pulled out a couple of Cammo kits, applied it to the both of us and of we went on foot. (Thier vehicle was disabled). The conceal broke once or twice, but we made it back just fine.

The moon, the wilderness, and being able to help a person. I decided that the hologrind was not for me. If they would just give us something that defines us a bit more, it will make it that much more enjoyable.

I guess my defining moment was similar to this. Almost all of my precious Ranger memories were on Dathomir, it's my favorate planet for that reason I suspect. I was perched up on a ridge and a group of fresh characters came out of the trees, their HAMfull of wounds and diseased, they entered my camp and passed out.

When they got up, I gave them a camo and some foraged food, (by this time their whole Health and Action bars were wounds). We hiked back to the nearest outpost and they still ask me to go hunting with them, months later

Before vehicals came out I remember exploring Yavin IV, coming to some abandoned temple and I could sit in there and be the only one for km around. Some places that were purely for looks and content were only seen by the determined and Rangers that explored, now instead they are all POI badges and you can get there in less than a min on a speeder, people camp the great spawns, that at times I seemed to be the only one that knew about them, and well Yavin IV has never looked the same to me.

I still get kicks out of exploring ancient ruins and the strange landscape of different planets, just that now you can not find peace and solitude at those places anymore.

Quite a few months ago, hunting Kimo's on Lok with a group of about 12 people.

Things were getting nasty and guys were getting hurt, so out of the blue I threw up my HTFB. There was silence for a few moments then an overwhelming crescendo of:

"What the..."
"OMG!"
"I want one of these"
"Who's camp???"
"What's this called? Can I buy one?"
"It has crafting stations!"

I'll never forget that.

Of course then it started raining and I got flack for not building a decent roof

I know what you mean Turel. Before there were POI's (bah!), before there were vehicles, before there were mounts even, this little ranger ran corner to corner, top to bottom, edge to edge of the planetary maps. There was something to the idea that you knew you were the first to see what you found. I often kept a log of all the little items of interest in the wilderness, usually dismayed that SOE made them as nothing more than eye candy. However, when I found a cave, theme park, etc., I figured finding a group to come explore the cave would be a snap with the (probably) unique information I had discoverd. Wrong. I couldn't get anyone's lazy behindsaway from the cities. I suppose that's why they came up with vehicles, mounts, and the POI's. I felt it kinda stole our thunder as I believe to the explorer should go the spoils of the knowlege gained from searching the wilderness. So our value was diminished....

But anyway, a defining moment? Hmmm, maybe not 'defining' but exemplary would my first exploration of Lok before the mount release. Studying the planetary map, the great Lokian volcano stood out like a sore thumb as a target to venture toward. So after a long run south I find myself running up the steep sides of the volcano only to have that dramatic Lok music begin to play. It rose in a crescendo the higher I went. As the music reached its height I topped the crest of the volcano to be met with an enormous crater of lava. Smoke swirled about, birds on fire swooped around my character. It was a collection of curiosity, music, and visual scenethat just converged allat once that just 'wowed' me. Incidentally, standing in the middle of that lava lake was an imperial recruiter with his at-st, from whom I bought my first faction pet - a scout trooper, no less.

Hmm...my defining moment...

Id have to say it was when I first arrived on Yavin, and I saw the white beaches...I just followed them for a while on my swoop, then dismounted, camoed, and ran around the beach for a while. If we ever do get hunting cabins, mine is going on Yavin.

Another defining moment was on Endor. I had been swooping for a while, getting to the Ewok Lake Village, when I saw the huts rising above the water. That was awesome...I stayed at the village for over an hour, jsut watching the Ewoks and the water...seeing a sunset over the lake...it was awesome.

But of course, I have many other moments that I have logged in my Ranger notepad...all fun moments, and a few with suspense in them...

My defining moment was shortly after i earned the Master Ranger title. Its starts when this guy called Drala (he was already a Master Ranger) had already introduced me to the basics of making some mon(k)ey by providing hides to Armoursmith and meats to Doctors, so there was this rich Armoursmith in Naritus that posted in the galaxy forum asking that if there was any big time hunter willing to work for him and earn some money a great armour for it. When i read I said to myself "i am a big time hunter after all, I'm a Master Ranger, and that waht we are supposed to be, arent we?". So I made the deal with he armoursmith and he told me that if i got him 50k of a very good wooly spawn , he would pay me 15 c/u PLUS A FULL SUIT OF KRAYT ENHANCED LAYERED COMPOSITE ARMOR! AND A CRATE OF PSG TOO!. The armor and the shield alone could have costed easily around 1million creds in my glaxy, but this armoursmith was rich and desperate for wooly, he complained that no one provided the hides he needs in big amounts, so he was willing to pay a lot for it.

So when i made the deal, i contacted my friend drala and asked his advice on killing huurtons on Dantooine ( they were the mobs that were dropping the hide the AS wanted) and when he learned i became a Master ranger, he told me : " Congrats bro! and as a present for achivieng the title i will give u A BRAND NEW SUIT OF ADVANCED UBESE, this will help u on taking those hurrtons on your own. The guy got the ubese for a AS he alwas worked for, and it was unused, just for me. I couldnt believe it, that the first time i really felt we rangers are the good guys, th only and sole profession which cares for each other. Will be eternally thankfull to Drala for it.

So went to Dantooine and started to kill the hurrtons. It tooke me around 6 days to get such huge amount of hide but i did, and i must say that i really felt i became th eultimate hunter those. After killign thousand of huurtons, i started to learn the exact method of killing them without hardly evengetiing a scratch. I learned the exta timer it took for the matrons to spawn, the exact seconds the pups attacted, the optimal distance i had to keep away from the lair, the exact time the hurtons took to reach me at 64 m away, and whic specilas and ares shot i had to spawn and in whic order to have them down before they resched me. those days i became a true specialist on the art of huurton killing ( sadly all this knowledge slightly changed after the creature balance patch, and it is no more updtated). Adn i did it, got 50k after living and entire week on the wild, with ahrdly any contact to the civilization.

I got my money, and got my kick ass composite. And after i went to my home, and droped my Adv Ubese Armor, Compo Armor, looked my bankk accoutn and saw i was 750k richer and looked at the sole 1 unit of that high quality Ezak Wooly hide i got, i said to myself: " Indeed, I AM a Master Ranger". Since that time i really understood what these "rangers" are about : friendship and helpfulness ( got a free full set of ubese from a fellow Master Ranger as a gift to for reaching the title and as a way to help me on my endeavor of getting 50k of hide), becoming a true hunter ( learning the ways the critters behave so u can kill them more effectively and letally) , doing things that only rangers can do ( no other profession could have gotten such huge amount of hide in such short time) living and learning the ways of the wilderness ( learned how to LIVE on dantooine wilderness, which mobs i cant kill, which i can't, which can i outrun, which i cannot, where and when do certain crits spawn, etc) and became of service to another profession that wa sin depserate need for mine ( Armoursmiths, Docotrs, Chefs, etc ... THEY REALLY NEED US).

I still keep the original set of Ubese ( the gift), of Compo( the reward), 1 sole unit of that wooly(my handiwork) and the 0/913 condition Laser Carbine i used up to its exahustion on killing those huurtons ( The effort, MY effort). And i will always keep them in my house as a display for my own. They remind me how i discovered what was RANGER all about and how i wiill never drop this profession.

Hope this can inspire others on their rangering

Cheers!

My defining moment was when I was sitting in the tavern in Anchorhead one evening. A human female dashed into the room and yelled for help because a bounty hunter was after her. I asked her the name of the BH. She said Soandso. I immediately tracked Soandso and told her exactly where Soandso was. We ran in the opposite direction. I continued to track Soandso and lead the human female to safety. When it appeared thatSoandso finally gave up, I shook hands with the human female and we parted ways. She kept asking who I was. *grin* I'm a ranger.

Haha - this is a good thread. Back in the days before holocrons I had some guy send me a tell asking me if I could help him track mott calfs. At first, I didn't want to accept, but he told me he needed to kill 30 and that he was offering me 3000 credits for each that I found. This was before I had tons of credits, so I took the job.

It turned out that this guy was a pretty advanced player. He was a firm believer (as were many in those days) of the jedi-by-completing-certain-quests-that-only-came-from-named-npcs-without-titles method of unlocking his force slot,so whenhe got a quest from a naboo npc that asked him to kill 30 mott calfs and then said "I sense a disturbance in the force,"credits weren't an issue.

This seems laughable now, but remember that these were the days before holocrons....

At any rate, I got really lucky on the way out to meet him andstumbled acrossa mott lair right outside of Moenia, and he thought I wasthe huntress Diana herself- no, seriously, he was really impressed that I could find the things so fast. I didn't tell him that I had just moved to naboojust beforeI got master ranger, and that I didn't even know what a mott was until he asked me to help him find them...

Well, this first lair got him to like half of the calfs he needed, but the other few nights were rough going - we spent an hour or two a night and neither of us could find a single mott calf - it didn't help that naboo herb meat was very good at the time and others were hunting motts for the meat as well.

So, I spenta few daysfiguring out where notts were most likely to spawn -- you know, exploring the far corners of naboo in search of the elusive mott calf.

But after a few days of this,I was ready for the hunt -- had the perfect hunting grounds, knew to look for dead log lairs --and sure enough, when we went out again, we found tons of motts - like two lairs withinthe first hour of the hunt.

I'm afraid that the moment was a bit anti-climactic for my client (he was really hoping old ben would descend upon the death of that 30th mott and confer upon him jedi status), but I felt a definite sense of accomplishment - I felt that I had finally moved out of the role of ranger as solitary hunter and relatively anonymous seller of meat/hide, etc... on the bazaar to that of professional ranger whose knowledge of the planets and their fauna was of tangible use in helping players accomplish their goals.

I have had many ranger moments. My most recent was just yesterday, but it was more of my bud saying "Man, I am glad you are a ranger." The talk of very good quality avian meat spawning on Naboo was flying around in my guildchat. So I decided to help out my Doc friend who has been helping me level TKA. I head there and was scoring 32-39 from a kaadu (I also LOVE being a Dosh). Later my guildchat fires up againa s a new wave of folks come online and the get the Naboo Avian messaage. One person asked how much meat people we getting from kaadu and most of them replied 10-15 (Not many scouts left in my guild). I had to gloat and I piped up with the response of 32-39. I got a round of "whoa's." I felt some nice pride from that one. But this nice harvesting bonus has always been a plus for me as far as my guild is concerned. I am always needed on hunts because I can track (we are always looking for a specific resource) abd i can harvest so much.
