Thread: Mask scent check fails aggro creatures. This is a mistake.

The changes implemented throw in a chance that creatures will attack you if your mask scent check fails. This made the feature worse.

If mask scent breaks there should be no more of a risk of you getting attacked than if you didn't use mask scent.

This makes mask scent a liability. You can usually get within 30 - 40 meters of many red dots without getting attacked. But if your mask scent breaks they're going to attack you anyway?

I had this happen last night. I was usingmask scent and 35 meters from some baz nitches when the 'a creature has detected you' message came up, and I had three baz's on me.

If I hadn't used mask scent they would have left me alone.

When you're dealing with red cons there is no such thing as higher protection at higher risk. If I can trust my own manuevering but can't trust my mask scent then there's no reason to use mask scent. It puts you and your group at more risk, not at more safety, because you have NO control over when a whole mob will attack you.

If mask scent breaks and you're within attack range of a mob, fine, I accept that. But if the mob wouldn't have attacked you if you weren't using mask scent, this is illogical and makes the mask scent feature useless because it's something you can't trust.

Since the patch, I have yet to have a creature break mask scent on me, be it a Rogue Fambaa or anything. Sounds great right? Wrong, now this skill is even more useless than before. I can run through a pack of tusk cats (mid-lvl aggro mob) without mask scent on and they just look at me, but have never had one attack me. But now with mask scent on, I can get within 50m of 1 and it will start following me and eventually attack me. The never break mask scent though, I can lay there incapped or even slain and mask scent is still on. Now what's wrong with that picture?

Huh? I have the opposite problem... actually, it's a good thing... mask scent never is broken... its nice not to worry about being attacked. Except for NPCs... but this is obviously not the Devs intent...

Nah, you didn't read the post. Now if the mask scent breaks on a creature - whether it's a red or yellow mob, there is a chance the creature will attack you. Before this, if it broke you simply weren't camoflauged. Now you have a chance they'll attack you just for using it.

My mask scent never breaks either, yet I still get aggro. So how is this a good thing?

I've heard that Mask Scent is not working at all (you don't get any exp either).

So are you sure you're even masked? It could be that its not active, and you're getting aggro as if you didn't have it on.

Mask Scent does work, maybe not as intended, but it does work. I can walk right up to a big cluster of reds, search their lair, stick out my tungue at them and walk away without getting detected. I've tested on mobs that previously would break my maskscent and now they don't. Mask Scent makes me close to completely invisible to aggro mobs, and in this regard it really does seem to work. However, it ain't giving xp no more, not sure if this was intended - i couldn't care less, but this might be bugged. Also you do seem to get some wierd aggro from time to time, without your mask scent being broken - this is propably a bug, an effect of the "maskscent break/creature aggro" feature not being implemented properly. All in all i would say this is a HUGE improvement over pre-patch conditions. A Ranger is now truly a wanderer of the wild - and noone can take that position from us (you try lead a group through a cluster of aggros and see who runs away unnoticed ^^ ).

I humbly disagree with Darumar.

Mask Scent is much worse. It may be working a bit more now, but the fact is that you have no earthly idea if you are actually camoulfaged. You get no message saying that you were detected. I've gotten aggro from mobs just the way Jekah describes. Mask Scent is somehow still on, yet I'm attacked. If I was detected, it should go off. And we get zero xp. The xp tradeoff is okay if it actually works, but I still don't think it does. They screwed this skill even worse than it was. I actually got a thrill from the rare occasions that I did get xp, because I at least knew it worked for a change.

As I mentioned a couple times on the Scout board, the change where being detected may result in you being attacked might not be too bad for Rangers of high skill, but a starting Scout who just picked up /maskscent will probably un-hotkey it and never use it again once they get aggroed by the first pack of nonaggressive tortur they come across.

I can see getting aggroed by aggro critters, but it makes no sense that a passive critter would suddenly become aggressive toward you just because you were trying to be less detectable than normal.

Well, it's obvious that people are having different experience with mask scent. I get aggroed with it on, where I don't with it off. Some don't get any aggro what-so-ever. This might be more difficult to fix than we think. I got to thinking that maybe my +75 in Camo wasn't enough, but if this is the case we're in trouble, hehe.

Yeah, I posted this on main Discussion board.

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Development&message.id=339837&page=2

Quite apparent that there is a wide variety of experience with this. Some think it's working better than ever, others think it is teh suck. (I'm the latter obviously)

I think it's horribly broken. I'm better off without it right now. Camo is +65 for me, btw.

yea i'm sorry - i left out my camo skill which is 105 (Bothan) - this makes me close to undetectable, which is why i don't see the rare aggro as a problem. For other ppl not as skilled i'd reckon it would be a BIG problem - again sorry not to take that into account.

I have +105 camo skill, before the patch mask scent worked just fine, now it doesnt work at all, it doesnt go off when i'm detected, and it sure as hell doesnt keep things from attacking me, before i could go straight through a pack of rancors without them even knowing i was there, now i cant even go past a **edit** kreetle without getting attacked, and the mask scent icon stays up even if i am detected, it is bugged.
