Hey guys, lets do a PSA thing (aka busy work ) on Ranger templates. I would love itif some of you guys could write a SHORT paragraph describing what combat profession you use with Ranger and why it works (pros and cons). I will set up a thread witha list of combat profs and a SHORT description and then sticky it . If multiple entries are submitted for a profession, I will pick the one I like best, but please don't be offended if it is yours that doesn't get fixed. Thanks for any help you can give me .

Please post you paragraph here and I will consolidate them in a day or two.

Do you want only templates that include Master Ranger?

My TC Ranger Template is:
- Master Ranger
- Master Rifleman
- CH 0003

Other requirements for this template: Pet stims.
Nice to have with this template: An auto-heal combat droid. BE pets with high HAM, low damage.

Rifleman will take down most things, and I leave my pets on guard in case anything does aggro. Two pets and an auto-heal combat droid (I use different attack commands for each so they can hit three seperate targets if need be) will tank most trouble for you.

This template is not fully tested.

Master Ranger/Master CH/Pistoleer 3/0/0/0

With 2 BE light armored pets at master i have a wall of HAM to absorb the blows. As well as just looking the part of having hunting animals. Pistoleer gives me dodge +60 and body shot 3. So that i can move in and heal my frankenbeasts and not take the riflemans range or kinectic damage x2 penalty. Dodge becomes really effective when your up close. Master CH also gives me the benefit of not needing buffs. Even novice CH would make it worth it to have droid and a pet out at the same time.

this template replaced

TKM/Master Ranger

The king of the harvesters buffed. Kill, harvest, kill, harvest, rinse repeat. Oh you have some wounds? Lets go to this tree here and just meditate them away. Downsides massive battle fatique the bain of all brawlers. Buffed the TKM is king. Add powerboost and pretty much all states in game and you have a winner. Downside? Kinectic only until the quest heat damage VK's come out. Got disease? Meditate. Got poison? Medidate? Lost a limb to a raveonous bugblatter beast of trawl. Um. find a doctor.

My new template (almost there) I went this way simply because with the CB so far off, if you want to be able to acually play with other people you have to play with them, hard bringing a Pinto to a top fuel drag race.

Master Ranger
TKM
Artisan 0001

Super fast at killing and harvesting critters. Bonus of being able to meditate my own wounds away. I only need to see entertainers to heal my BF and I'm off and hunting within minutes again. Novice artisan with one box of surveying, just to mine Lok wild wheat and Tat fiberplast. Extra cash coming my way by selling those things on the Coronet bazaar.

Right now, I am harvesting meat for one doctor only and if any of my guild mates need something I do my best to get it for them. I don't charge my doc anything for the meat I harvest. We have an agreement that if I ever need money, all I need to do is ask him and I got it. Don't need money really other than brandy, ahrisa and veghash. My main purpose is helping people out with things they need. Money is secondary. Just the way I do things.

Master Ranger - Master Rifleman - Medic 1,0,0,0

Main:

Provides the player with hunting skills and harvest bonuses to complement a very powerfull combat profession.

Pros:

Massive Damage Output (rifle)

Single Pull Capability (rifle) - Over 40m a rifleman has a huge chance to pull a single creature from a pack

Camo Bonuses (ranger) - Using camo kits give the player many shots without getting attacked

Prone Bonuses (rifle) - Using prone gives lots of shots unagro'd, coupled with Camo too you get 20+ shots un-agro'd

Keep Critters At Range (ranger) - Pheascene and Adhesive Mesh slow and root creatures

Harvest Bonuses (ranger) - You can harvest more off a single creature than most

Damage Types (rifle) - You have a massive selection of damage types to hit creatures weaknesses

Able To Heal (medic)

Able To Track Animals (ranger) - Using /areatrack enables you to find rare and valuable critters

Single Pool Shots (rifle) - /headshots allow you to attack a creature and work on one pool

Cons:

Lack Of Melee Defenses (rifle/ranger) - Compared to melee classes, week in defenses against creatures

Range Causes Harvesting Problems (rifle/ranger) - Have to run to target to harvest

High HAM Costs (rifle) - You will need enhancers (food, spice) to hunt effectively.

Lots of SP Cost (misc) - Ranger and scout cost alot of SP, could be spent elsewhere

Short as i could get the descriptions of pro's and cons eheh

Master Ranger

Master Scout

Master Rifleman (or woman or thingie!)

Marksman 4000

Medic 1000

DESCRIPTION

This was the template that fit like a glove my vision of the Ranger. The hunter; rifles draped over their shoulder, traps on their belt, thick, sturdy workclothes to adorn them as they pushed through the wilds.

The rifle compliments perfectly the abilities of the Ranger.

Maskscent and Camouflage work in tandem with the range of the Rifleman to produce devastating effects. Attacking your prey from 65 metres can often mean they are beaten before they have picked up your scent. Whilst you are training you may rely on Concealshot to help you survive the greatest dangers, but when you have mastered the art of the Rifle, you will rarely, if ever, have to rely on the subtleties of concealing your fire.

Track your prey, find your prey, move to within 65 metres and devastate them with Mind and Headshots.

If by misfortune a group head towards you, again, the Rifle and Ranger skills work in tandem to support you.

Traps can slow the creatures down, or give status effects such as stun or blind. The Phecnacine trap is my personal favourite, grinding creatures to a virtual halt whilst your rifles blaze on.

The power of Strafeshot can rip mobs of creatures to pieces, falling one by one as you keep them at bay, watching them finally fall to your feet as they near you.

With some basic medical skills, you can heal yourself when required, though this will be rare. You will move through the forest as a shadow, and your prey will rarely know what their fate was, never mind whom dealt it.

Regarding your HAM, the key is your Mind secondary that lowers Special Move cost. By increasing it to 1100, one Brandy can make all specials use zero Mind, absolutely none. Then you can use your medical skill to keep your Health and Action in good shape. You may find that your weapon takes more out of you than the creatures themselves.

When considering your path as a Ranger, the first step should always be to consider your vision. People's will differ. Sending your Ranger into the wilds with a Rifle in one hand, and a trap in the other; picking their way through forest trails and mountain paths... catching the scent of a wild animal over a ridge, moving slowly into position and... *pulls a trigger*

Master Ranger, Master Pistoleer, Novice Medic, Ranged support 1.

I enjoy using pistols for my play style because it lends more to being mobile and moving around a lot. I do a lot of hunting and harvesting. Since the beginning days either doing destroy missions or just wandering a planet engaging interesting creatures, I enjoyed the combination of mobile combat and using my scout/ranger skills to hunt. I tried rifles, but for me it was very slow progression, and a lot of belly crawling, and staying still etc. With pistols, I start around 30-40m, throw my lead traps, roll into a kneel shooting, and starting with my bleed. I like the kneeling to start for I can easily just move forward to get up, and still use stims and traps. Once creatures move up, I start to run around. I like the added accuracy for pistols while moving, I use TN as much as possible to gain distance on creatures. It's all about kiting for me. I use my traps, TN and mask scent/camo as best I can to keep me from getting attacked to much, keep the distance from my target and take it down. Pistoleer is actually very week and underpowered for an elite combat profession. I do OK with it when hunting PvE, despite. It's strengths are the availability to fight at ranged as well as close up. You can move around, be at various different ranges without to much of a penatly, once you're at master or even with Marksman 4. Even though the defences are weeker then they should be especially for closer ranged combat, a melee KD helps, and my scout/ranger skills help me crowd control. Again the power/damage output for pistoleer is week, but I believe that once pistoleer gets fixed, and if it's designed to be a close ranged combatant with crowd control, it will be a very useful and powerful tool for a hunter with ranger.

I would say that would be the best...most people know if they are only here to dabble, that the Tracking line +whatever combat skills that they can get is the way to go.

I forgot to mention that you stange folks with Master Ranger and Master Squad Leader, Master Dancer, etc should post yours as well...

Master Ranger

Master Fencer

Medic 1 0 0 0

Pros: Good defences (can hunt without armor in most cases), can heal self

Cons: Low on damage, damage types, mind costs are large.

Basically good for everything except critters like Giant Malklocks which are resistant to the two damage types a fencer has.

Previously: Master Ranger/Master Fencer
Now: Master Tailor/Merchant/Commando

ok, I've calmed down now... once again (but probably not as good as the first time )
[EDIT]:AAAAAAAAAAAAH! It did it again, good thing I remembered to copy FIRST this time...

MR/MRM/CH 3 boxes in one tree -0 SP left

Pro: High damage-speed, /concealshot+ /conceal, Even if the /conceal breaks a pet can guard. Speed things up with pet hitting lair and you do /strafeshot2. You can make all the camo and traps and there is a cottage industry out there for Scouts and Rangers that dabble that use kits and traps but might not be able to make them.

Con: High HAM cost (you will always need something: food/drink/buff - costs of 100 on the weapons are common - that is 700 mind for each /headshot3 if you have 400 Focus), poor defenses (Enraged Rancor Bull is to be respected: KD guareented if it closes), No ability to do kenetic damage unless it's from the pet, Guns are not cheap and melt in your hands if you use a PU. No med ether.

Comments: Idea is to never get hit. The pet helps with that, some will swap out the pet for a marksman's support tree and get /warningshot, but I don't like the undependable nature of that as compared to the more dependable pet and a pet has much more utility for different situations (remember, never get hit: you can use pet stims still). My only problem is tight spaces were I can't really use pets and have to go with the Rifle only(DWB, Corvette, Geo Cave in some places) but some caves are still doable. It is also comforting to have a pet guard and to be alerted that something else is comming whenthe pet charges.

It's also a great RP thing to be a mounted hunter, with a very nice mount instead of a cheaper non-CH one. With RIfle, I can drive-by shoot swoopers that get a little "uppity"
