Thread: Are you having fun as a Ranger?
I'm a casual player, and my character progresses slowly compared to most. I've been grinding through combat skills towards Fencer mostly, with some Pistol skills to back that up. I picked up Scouting skills initially for the Exploration line. Recently, however, I got the bug to try to advance to Master Scout (I'm about halfway there now). I had a blast the first day I spent really focusing on going solo scouting. A nice change of pace. Based on that experience, my Scouting bug is starting to become a Ranger bug.
So, my question to the Ranger community is: are you having fun playing a Ranger? I know the class has been buggy, but it sounds like the devs have at least tried to address it. I'm just curious to find out if the Rangers out there enjoy their game time, or if it's such a frustrating profession that maybe I should conquer my Ranger bug and steer clear.
Thanks in advance for you input.
ranger = my next surrendered profession

traps have become more usefull since the nerf of covering fire, but not by much. I currently have 2 planetary conceal kits, why? because as a master ranger, they last all of 16 minutes, and that is standing in the city.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzt!
I have a ton o' kits. Granted, I have to make them in the city cause the pub. crafting tool I get in the FB is the one for chefs (really, that is annoying... it would be more useful if it was the Droid, Weapon and Gen. one). I need the survival exp it gives BADLY as I RP my character... I don't "power camp" and drop one only if it makes sense to.
What I think you have problems with is but a tweak away from being fixed. Granted, it may take some time but if you want this profession you should be a patient, good-natured person. If this is truely intolorable to you then by all means, pick something that will make you happier.
Now, that is not to say I think they work fine. Oh no, I'm FAR from THAT group. BUT... I'm working around this stuff and at the same time stating what I think are problems (I have other posts on /conceal /maskscent and I think it's broke). Will it make me dump all my Ranger? Nope. If they NEVER fix a thing? Doubt it. I sacrificed Artisan, full eng IV and Survey IV and all med to be Ranger/Rifleman. You may be different, and I won't begrudge your opinion. But I do have to speak up for the devs so far on this profession: they have done a FANTASTIC job so far and the future is only brighter. Does that make me a fanboi? Try looking up some of my posts about Commandos and Rifleman. I call a spade a spade and right now, what Rangers have gotten overall are pretty good.
Yes. I love playing a ranger. So much that I've decided to stop my trek to bounty hunter and stick with mastering this profession.
Sure, ranger is buggy. So are all the other professions. I read almost all the boards constantly, so I know this.
If you really liked the scouting line and scouting skills have become second nature, then you will enjoy playingranger. Just make sure you also work on specializing in one of the ranged weapons trees or at least unarmed combat or you'll get frustrated. I plan on working through the first two arms of the carbineer skills tree. (I may do the whole carbineer tree if I feel like trading in my marksman pistol and rifle skill trees.)
Frustrated? At times. But it has nothing to do with the profession. LOL. I'm one to play the game for what it is, not what I hoped it would be. That's why I'm not going for Bounty Hunter. Ranger is more of what I thought Bounty Hunter would be. So, I play a ranger now. With /areatrack to find players, I was very interested to continue playing a ranger.
In general, the ranger community is one of the best in the game. Just because you are a ranger makes you part of a tight knit group of people. I have yet to contact a ranger in the game for training and have him/her turn me down...regardless of faction...(I'm a neut)...EVEN if they are on the other side of the planet from me. Well, unless they don't have the skill. You know what? I would do the same for any other ranger, too.
Yes, I am having a blast playing a ranger (0-2-3-4, soon to be 0-3-4-4).
Is it buggy? Sure, but no more than any other class, IMHO. I've loved traps since myearly scouting days, I actually enjoy fishing and it now gives xp, I get constant /tells from scouts asking for advice, and medics love my camps. Itsa great feeling to get in a big group, go to a difficult planet, and have everyone asking you to /examine the mobs, set up your camp so they can make stims, etc. Perhaps I am unusual in that I have met some great people, but I think a lot of it is educating your peers on what you can do.
I'm pretty patient. Rangers have a lot more changes in the pipelines, and I'm sure they'll fine-tune a lot of the recent additions. Considering the scope of some of the patches, I don't mind playing the wait and see game. I can't comment on the camo kits, as I don't have that line yet.
My only complaint is thatmy pistol just isn't cutting it anymore
Mobs that were easy, and not red cons, are now killing me... but that is something for the pistoleer forums!
If your having fun with your scouting, Ranger might be the way for you.
Having a blast - Rangering seems to mesh well with my mining business
Since the knockdown/posture nerf didn't affect traps, we are now theMASTERS of kiting ![]()
Fun as a Ranger? Hmmm, well I haven't gotten rid of it yet. Got rid of my Fencing Skills, but I still find my Ranger skills useful. But Fun?It has its moments. I did have a lot of fun getting to Master Ranger. Many nights spent in the deep remote areas ofNaboo. Why do people try to solo places like Lok or Dantooine when there is alot of good hunting on places like Naboo and Rori. Granted you have go way out there ![]()
With the recent patch, I was actauly useful in a group. Tracking down Big Game like Krayts and Kimos was well received. Camo Kits are a good start. I don't mind the resource requirements (except for the Lokian Domesticated Meat), but I would like them to be a lot more resliant and last longer. Also with Conceal and Maskscent, the auto-agro is a bit much, but that too should change for the better.
Part of my Fustration was that I was originaly aFencer Ranger. Well currently, melee/brawlers have more issues of usefulness then Rangers.
But I fixed that by getting Bounty Hunter (yes a Master Ranger dabbling into BH and not the other way around.
)
Ranger by itself is getting better, but my fun comes from others things as well as being a Ranger.

"are you having fun playing a Ranger?"
- For all intents and purposes, I don't even notice the Ranger skills for the most part. ![]()
- I use the Scout Mesh trap to attract distant beasts and no other traps
- I use the Basic Camp kit so my Medic can pull out his Crafting Droid, and no other camps
- With the current harvesting issues, I don't benefit much from the Ranger harvesting bonus ![]()
- I have never crawled, so I don't get any benefit from Terrain Negotiation
----
- On the other hand, I used /areatrack for the first time last night. Once they fix the issues with it, I will find that most rewarding. ![]()
- I have yet to use /conceal, as I'm still collecting the resources (slow and steady). But I see the camo kits potential, once they resolve any issues with it
- /track interests me, and I hope to see its implementation soon
- The new traps and camps intrigue me as well, but I will have to see how they fit into my gameplay before passing judgement on them.
- I don't have the Ranger profession for the skills. I have it because I enjoy the concept of the Ranger. If I getuseful and beneficial skills as well, that's just gravy. ![]()
Yes I'm having fun as a ranger. Before this game came out I have intended to become a master ranger. I played it on the very first day it came out and the first thing I did was walk from bestine to wayfarer.. So I have ranger blood in me hehe. The new additions of /areatrack are great. I can now help my group out when looking for big game. The conceal kits are not worth the time and effort finding the materials and crafting them, so I don't use them. Also the friendship between the rangers are great. I have yet to meet a nasty ranger. Everyone is willing to help and train one another. I also love that their are not to many of us the fewer the better
. I also love to explore so mask scent really helps me avoid danger. My favorite activity that, I didn't know I would enjoy doing so much is making lots of money harvesting hide bone and meat. Having a high harvesting bonus helped me efficiently collect tons of stuff without feeling like I was grinding. Unfortunatly I'm really, really, really bummed that the dev's reduced the amount of hide/bone/meat we take from animals by about 40 to50 percent, so the one of my most enjoyable parts of the game has lost quite a bit of it's appeal.
My advice to you, if you can deal with the minor bugs and really enjoy exploring then I would pick up this profession.
