Thread: What's in a name (OT again...I am a pain)

My little name there on the left has a bit of a story to it. It comes from the game Descent 3(a game series of which I was quite the fanatic back in the day). Descent 1 was, in fact, my first ever active online gaming experience by using Kali(1st generation server browser program that converted ipx to TCP/IP), well that Doom2, and Duke3D . I had used a variety of names prior to Descent 3 online, usually changing around once per year or so, then this game hit and through an odd series of conversations with my roomate at the time, SolrFlare was the result.

Why the "leet" mis-spelling? Its just because I couldn't use any more letters than that for my name lol. Anyway, I had a 15 minutes of fame moment with that game, and was an active member of that community. The name just ended up sticking and I've used it ever since.

My in game name Solarius is just a second generation reworking of my usual online handle into more of a real name. I was actually Solarus in beta but someone got Solarus about 5 minutes before I did when the game went live So, Solarius I became and have been ever since.

My last name is long and Italian, try having a Korean say it - so during my first tour I became Sergeant Mat. Then there were actually two SGTs Mat... so I went with my nickname of JB.... hence JBMat

Characters Name - if you know it, and not many do - first name misspelled, part of last name

One of my online personas was named Magus_opus, andusing this name cross referenced with Phanatasy Star online (a Mag was a hunter's companion, able todo kick ass special damage to creatures depending onwhat you fed it.), and some fun Anime RP me and some friends always did for kicks, i came up with a short and useful name.

On topofall thisi developed an unusual affinity for rice balls, and was refered to a lot as Mag-kun. From all these complex events a new name, Mag RiceEater, was born (I'm still trying to find out how tosay one who eats rice as a single phrase in japanese).

But i found out that Mag was supposedly taken, so i stuck with another part of the butchered Japanese/Englishthat i know from speaking tomany of my half japanese/american friends (born near military basesand that speak a mixture of the two languages we all dubbed Japenglish)online.

(Ironically i know more Japanese than Korean now.......and im Korean/american. My mother smacked me so hard when she found out.......)

Hakai- (loosely) destruction/annihilation

Youkai- (loosley) Demon/ usually male.

Though i think i miss my RiceEater surname a lot....*munches on rice ball*

As for the reason for such a destructive name? hell i was in the marines...what do you expect? *shrug*

lol

In Highlands Ranch, COhere... Littleton really I guess.

Anyway, my name means nothing - it was one the game randomly made, I liked it (imagine that...), so I kept it.

My first name is just my first name, with an apostrophe thrown in. For the last name, I'm a big "Highlander" fan, and so I chose MacLeod as the last name. Heh, even in my biography, it say's I'm an Immortal who can only die by having my head chopped off. The funny thing is, I'm not even Scottish.

I had an epiphany and didn't want to hijack any threads. I just got Th'Gils' name and wanted to ask if he was from Colorado by any chance . Plus I thought that guessing our names meanings (if there is one) would be a great way to ralx a bit .

Calc, are you from Colorado too? I'm in Denver (technically I live in Lakewood, work in Golden, but you get the idea)

Edit: Doh, off-topic in an OT thread!

My name comes from the days of Half-Life team deathmatch when a bunch of us chose names of local companies as our monikers. We had Sun Microsystems, Red Hat, and Silicon Graphics. When TFC (Team Fortress Classic) came out, we started a new clan, [dhcp]. Everyone else changed their name, but I kept Silicon, because I liked the ring. Also, no one else was using it as far as I could tell. I didn't want to be another "SniperJoe" or "LeetDood" or what have you.

Mine is far less simple than Silicon's unfortunately (which is a great name btw, very Sci-Fi for some reason). My daughter came home with this formula for making your own "Star Wars" name after being on the internet at a friends house. She knew I had pre-ordered Galaxies and was insistent that I use "her formula".

Alas, I had already invested way too much time into Oppma when I decided I wanted to change the name, and soooooo , here I am. lol
