Thread: Funny Assumptions You Made When You Started Playing the Game

I'm sure everyone has some things they thought were true when they started playing, that seem kind of funny to think about now. I know when I started playing, I was always a little nervous to jump in the water. I mean, in Star Wars, the water has never been a friendly place. I assumed something might attack me as I swam accross some river. I remember the first time I went to Dathomir. At that point, I had stuck mostly to Tatooine. But here I was on Dathomir. I joined a big group.

(This was back when groups were needed to take out Enraged Rancors. ((Ah those were the days. Still a fair amount of ranged fighters. Comp armor was still rare, "oh, wow, cool, what's that?" "composite armor, it has 60% kinetic resists." "whoa, how much did that cost?" "1 million, but it's worth it." Doc Buffs? What are Doc Buffs? Jedi were rare, made rare even still by the fact that they were afraid to show theirtitle for fear of being mowed over.))

I digress. Anyway, the group is ready to go, and off we go, all on foot mind you because to get on your bike on Dathomir was sure death. We come to the very wide river beside the outpost, and I certainly didn't want to get in there. What sort of creatures might be living in that murky water? Of course it is funny now, but, shouldn't the water have some dangers within?

For the longest time I was also scared to search a lair. When I saw the option pop up on the radial menu I thought, no way, who knows what will jump out of that lair if i go searching through it. Of course, its funny now, but, again, it still kind of makes sense doesn't it? If there are any creatures alive inside or outside of the lair, do you think they're just going to let you fiddle around in their lair?

Anyway, I'm sure other people have some more.

I remember when I first started, it must have been my second day playing. I was in Mos Eisley and I saw someone's name that was red. I asked on TeamSpeak if I should avoid anything that was red on the radar and on the map and I of course got yes as the answer. So I'm sitting here trying to flank this person when they attack me and incap me! I sent them a tell and was like, "Gee, thanks so much! I'm new and I guess this is my first impression of the game. They warned me that there'll be jerks that I will run into ..." I was upset I didn't get a response back. I'll never forget that person ... that Valarian Swoop Leader.

When I started in Moenia I used to do delivery missions from Mo to theed without using the shuttle. I used to try to find the best way to take on any hill/mountain since I figured thats how you got scout xp for the terrain negotiation line. Heh...

I've come to this game after having been disillusioned by DAoC. I was fed up with the so-called "buffbots", second-accound shamans skilled only for buffing. You know, I *wanted* to play a shaman in Camelot because they also had that sweet cave-magic (sort of like CM stuff in SWG) but everytime i wanted to join a group, the question was: "Can you buff" - "No" - "Sorry, we don't need you"

So when i first joined SWG I thought "Well, buffs certainly isn't something found in an SW environment..."

Boy, was I wrong. And I only found out about buffs a couple of weeks after starting the game. I always wondered how people could possibly take out those hughe mobs without getting killed. Until a guildmate tipped me some credits and said "Go see a doc and get some buffs."

Oh, and I also thought Jedi were rare...

When I started playing, I was a scout (been on the road to ranger since day 1!). So, when I realised/learned that I could take meat from a dead animal, I thought I was supposed to eat it. I even ended up buying myself a food/chem crafting tool (because it looked like a mobile stove!), trying to find a way to cook my meat!

I didn't use buffs or uber armour, so why did the combat revamp have to spoil my game?

Jedi being rare... I remember that! /sigh

I remember on my second or third day I had learned how to travel to other planets and such, and was stood around Mos Eisley SP with the 5 minute shuttle wait (or was it even 10 back then? I forget!). Well 2 guys who were obviously bored started crawling around the floor and muttering stuff, then headed towards me saying "Quick, you sneak the other side and we'll steal her shoes". I was a Nov Ent at the time with NO combat skills and was moving away as quickly as I could as they followed me around, in horror that they might steal my red shoes and I'd have to go round in bare feet or fork out for some new ones when I had next to no creds.

Also, and this is SO shameful, I was also scared to search lairs in case I pulled out a giant beasty. I always remembered the Uber Naff that you might sometimes get at the end of a Naff Lair when I was doing TK grinding way back, can't remember what they're called, I haven't hunted Naffs in SO long. Well I thought lair search might do something very similar if it got a bad roll. I still thought this until 2 months ago.. and I've been Master Ranger since the beginning of December and Nov Scout up through the ranks for 6-8 weeks before that... /blush

I was also devestated when I started that NPC's could march round in Biker Scout armour and I couldn't.. but this dream is about to be realised with the CU

My biggest assumption was of cause that this would be a Starwars game. The 2ns biggest was that the Devs would stay true to the original vision. I guess I should have known better from my 5 years with UO.
If we are talking in game assumptions, I actuarially thought that the most imported factor in crafting items was how to spend you experimentation points. I was looking forward to fiddling around with experimentation points to discover how to make the best items. Then I found out that crafting was about collecting the best resources, and getting the most experimentation taps. That was a disappointment, and a huge one at that.

I also thorght that running throe the shallow bogs on Rory would help me shake of the tuskcats that was chasing me. Well at least that have me a hope for survival, even if it was a false one.

Now THAT'S funny!

My assumption was that everyone could see your PERSONAL light. I spent a few weeks running around in the dark because I didn't know about the light. Once I finally learned about it, I kept doing the stobe thing to annoy my buds. I never understood why they never seemed to notice /blush.

I thought there night be some way to get into space. I did not expect to have to walk everywhere. I thought you would have to board the shuttle not talk to a droid. I thought you might spend more time killing stormtroopers or rebel soldiers than insects and bunnies. I thought charecters from the movies might play an interesting role and not just stand there telling you to gokill giant chickens. I thought you would die walking off a cliff. I thought you would get attcked in the water. I thought the Mos Eisley Cantina would be one of the most interesting places in the game. I did not expect bone armor to make you more vulnerable than you were in street clothes. I thought when you placed an item in your house there might be some way to sit it on a table or hang a picture on the wall. I thought my 250 credits might last me a week and actuallyallow meto buy worthwhile items and training. I thought food might be needed. I was not expecting people to be running around with six Graul Maulers a probot and three ATSTs under their control. I thought nothing could kill a mottled wrix. Being Star Wars I expected blasters to be far more powerful than unarmed combatants. I expected unarmed combatants to not useweapons. Since the box said you could play as a Jedi I expected everyone and his wookiee to be a Jedi. I wanted to play as a jawa.

My first day, so guys and I grouped and went out exploring... when it got dark we all freaked out and camped until daybreak, a falumpaset jumped us and it was crazy trying to fight the thing in the dark when we couldn't see it, we all got separated and it took us forever to find each other again.

Practically my whole first day on SWG was doing this delivery mission I got from an MT. The NPC spawn was bugged and I ended up waiting an hour for it to show up. After I got the package I just assumed that I had to walk to the next waypoint. The funny thing was that I was in Doaba Guerfel and the destination was Coronet. But I guess the walking did give me some valuable experience in surviving the wild like avoiding red dots and yellow squares (possibly the reason for why I became a ranger?). After working out how to get the planetary map up I finally came across a player city with a shuttleport.

I also remember getting a landspeeder and showing it off to my newbie friends. I wouldn't take it across water though as I thought it would sink (well it was a LANDspeeder).

Oh yeah, and I thought force sensitivity was a random event that happened to 1 in 5000 characters or something along those lines.

I remember thinking everyone in the (AFK) guild was really rude since they wouldn't talk to me. Funny thing is, I'm not the only one who made this mistake I saw this posted before as well ROFL.

I also remember running to the ramp of a shuttle to board it..... through the ramp and wondering what I did wrong.

I remember wishing to one day be strong enough to kill a giant spider or hopefully be able to stop those shauputs from killing me on Naboo.

I remember my first week. I joined with alot of friends from around leeds and they were all gamers and this was my first mmo and even RPG experience so you could say i was a little noobish.

I havnt a clue why i didnt read the manual but i spent11 days replying to tells in spacial I was wondering why the hell my friends were ignoring me and people around Narmle were running past me laughing and shouting "noob"

Fun times though

Nothing beats 16 friends from around where you live, running through the swamps of rori as total noobs hunting leviasquals. Good times.
