Thread: An experience as a hunter/gatherer for a doctor

I mentioned on a previous thread that I did some business with a doc. Lok had a wonderful shift of avian meat and she wanted 10k of it. I sent a /tell and she stated 20cpu was the price (she'd been barking requests for PST's for at least 2-3 hours at Nym's Stronghold. There were no takers to hunt for her). I told her, as the gatherer, that I'm the price setter, not her. I was going to say 45cpu, but thought I'd be nice and cut it to 35cpu. After all, perlek are easy to kill. So, I set off and spent about 4 hours (of my time) gathering the meat. I placed it on my vendor and she bought it. Okay, so I was 350k richer. Later, she hailed me for such a great job I did in gathering the resource so quickly, and asked me to gather dath herb meat that lately has a decent shift.

Well, last night I began the hunt. She sent a tell askingfor 5k of the meat since a friend of hers got the other 5k. So, happy about this, I headed off (malkots don't yield much more meat than perlek). Into the hunt, I get this, "my broke friend had the meat and I bought it off him because I felt bad. And I payed 20cpu just so you know." I was going to lecture her on supply/demand concepts and the like (among other arguments why hunters should charge more than pocket lint for meat), but figured it was futile. So, I merely responded witha congratulatory statement on securing such a great deal. Knowing she'd hope I would lower my price, I said nothing and later got the message thatSHE'D keep the price at 25cpu. WHAT NERVE!!! I mean, what the hell are people thinking? Doctors only have to make a schematic and throw the crap in a factory until it is done. Very little work is required after that. Just place your "MASTER DOCTOR" tag over your head and you'll get tell hell from leveller/grinders. Rangers have to WORK for our wares. Tomake our camps, we must hunt. We must also buy metal and polymer from others. To get meat/hide/bone for crafters, we must WORK for it (include risk of death and decay and insurance and travel costs). Someone wants tatooinian avian meat in a 50k stack? Maybe a guild hunting dwarf nuna's a tat mynocks for a week would yield such a number, and to expect a cheap price for it is insulting. We are hunters and enjoy it, but we're not saps.

For any of you Rangers out there in the business of hunting for crafters, NEVER FEEL BAD ABOUT CHARGING WHAT YOU MAY!!! If they want to bargain, sure, by all means. This is an organic market after all. Chances are, they're insulting your profession and your dignity by ripping you off.

This is part of the reason I don't usually bother taking on contracts. I usually just harvest stuff for friends (i.e. 0 cpu). I'm lucky enough not to have to worry about money (I'm still not sure how I have so much). I just hope they give us player bounties. I'd love to sign up for a few contracts and see the crafter try to get out of it. As it is, no one likes to give up their money. Throwing money out of the equation makes things a lot easier. It's a shame most Rangers can't do that. I think this is part of why so many Rangers are going over to the barter system. Now if only Weaponsmiths needed organics. As it is now, I don't really get anything out of the deal. But I'm happy with that.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I see your point and live it. My best buddy in the game is a doc and I hunt for him all the time for nothing. As far as the barter system is concerned, I have a deal with a BE/Chef (I used to be that too). I provide him the meat for a schematic of tissues, and I get 2 crates of brandy. He saves 700k in meat costs, and I save 700k in BE cask brandy. Non-BE brandy runs about 200-250k on my server. Another buddy is an architect. He needs endorian wooly for a master level couch, and I kill whatever wooly I find on endor as I'm passing through. He gets it free and I get free furniture. So,I completely agree we could live symbiotically with crafters close to us. Those crafters wanting to make a 500% profit, on the other hand, have something coming. If they don't want to provide me a nice set of layered padded armor in exchange for 20k of lokian leathery, it's 45cpu for high quality and 25cpu for low quality. I have to get income one way or another and missions just suck.

Yep- I know what you're talking about, alright. I've had people pull similar crap.

For instance, one guyoffered me 50 CPU for Talusian Avian Meat, and then he renegged on the offer after I'd gathered it. Suddenly he was only willing to pay 35 CPU. I guess he assumed that I'd just have to accept whatever he offered.

I told him that was not the deal, and that the price just went up to 100 CPU. He laughed, of course. I said good day, and told him to send me a message if he changed his mind.

He actually sent me a message a week later saying he couldn't find ANY Rangers to hunt for him, and asked if I would go after another troublesome resource: Corellian Avian Meat. I said, "of course. The price remains 100 CPU". He paid it, too.

lol you talk about risk in gathering resources when everything in this game is a breeze to kill. Just accept the fact you are all price gougers plain and simple. Not saying you can't charge what you want, but don't try to justify it with lame excuses. Personally when I hunt for folks, I charge on a scale, if they are extremely nice/repeat customers I actually don't mind letting them set the price, it costs me nothing to harvest meat or kill things-in fact I MAKE money taking on the lairs...voritor hunters for example, 25k a lair. so people are actually paying me to make money anyway., my travel ticket is the only expense since I have guild doctors who buff for free.

Ohhhh he tried to go back on his deal, wahhhh wahhh now it's 100 credits per!!!!

Lesson...take down payments before going into a contract with people you do not know, and keep detailed logs of the transaction, this goes for both buyer and seller..

I can only agree with you all.

Recently on the trade forums a rather unpopular player in some circles was offering 100cpu for Naboo wooley (1000 shock resistance). Peko peko and gularma watch out. In less than two hours I had 5k of hide. I sent the tell, dropped it on his vendor, and got paid.

Next night, same deal. 4k of hides, onto the vendor, got paid.

Many people asked how I could hunt for such a notorious butthead (well known griefer, exploiter, all around bozo). Creds are creds, taking them out of his hands means he has less money for other stuff, and I don't buy his stuff anyhow.

I then was collecting Endorian wool for a friend. I had dented the gurreck population nicely, and was passing through Theed. An architect was spamming asking for E wool. His going price - a whopping 10cpu. Admittedly the stuff was crap, but furniture is furniture and experimentation matters little. I laughed at him, told him 25 was more like it, due to the fact that it was Endor, and gurrecks can be a pain to find. He refused, I left. The friend got it for 15, only because he is a friend from about day one.

Meats are by and large a pain to harvest. Too often the best meat comes from critters with the smallest yield.

Hides for tailors are easier to get, and they don't usually care about type/quality. They want hides in big stacks. Usually easy to get.

As long as "we" have what "they" want - we win.

No armor, no buffs - I make enough on missions to buy my weapons and food- my harvestors pay for themselves- and you think you can pay me what for that good meat??

I laugh and move along, missions on Endor pay too well.

A fact that many people in such games do not realize is that the currency is not "credits", it is not "items" and it is not "buffs". The real currency is "time".

The time that I spend tohunt stuff as a Ranger makes my minimum price. The demand on the market makes the maximum price.

Why?

Because it happens often enough that I am hunting for a contract, when I get a tell from friends who want to do something togetherand have fun. I have to reject to fulfill my contract. This means, I am in duty, spending my time with one thing while I could do another thing that is more fun. This "working" time has to be paid.

On the other hand, when abuyer pays for the organics that I hunt for him, he is paying for his "time". He does not have to spend his time gathering organics, but he can go out with my friends and have a blast, while I could too but I am working my ass off.

So this ismy contract formula: (time I spend) + (time he saves) + (high demand bonus) = price.

Im prety much an 'ager' of meats and hides. I dont arange contracts on a per shift basis, I hunt and put my resources into stasis until the market is famished. I have no need for credits as im happy and comfortable with my stash so i can store these resources indefinatly. I have warehouses storingthe stacksand if a guildie needs a certain planetary hide or meat im happy to go into my warehouse and pick out the stuff they need and present it as a gift. If a person is requiring a certain resource i look down my inventory list and select the most suitable stack and sell it to them.

I have great fun hunting, i hate hunting for a specific target for meat or hides, i much prefer to just hunt for pleasure and wait for custom to come to me.

Wow, such a sweeping generalization from someone who is not a ranger.

First of all, your insulting generalizations diminishes the fun of the game, If you were my friend you would get as many resources as I can for free..gratis...nada...zip...

If not, you pay market price. The pure and simple fact is that your conspiracy theory about us gouging is not true in the least, I believe the problem comes from the uber rich grinders who will pay exorbitant prices for what they need.

I do a lot of contracts and I have a great time doing it...

My basic rules are:
1) For doctors, I will hunt what you want, my minimum price is 20 cpu (+extra for quality) + free buffs for as long as the shift is current. If I am on endor, I ask the doc to come to endor and buff me..it saves time for me to find a spam doc in coronet to buff me and he/ she will get their meat faster. If a doc offers 100cpu, I will take it and we can haggle over the buff situation.

2) For armorsmiths, once again, my minimum price is 20cpu(+extra for quality) and I will drop the price to include a set of armor for myself or my friends. I dont know how many suits of armor Ive given my friends just because I know they need it. I am a personal believer in the bartering system. It works for me, and works for the client. They get a price drop from their overhead and they make something that they would normally make and give one to me. Every one wins.

Most of my regular clients are friends and not guildies, therefore I dont feel bad about charging them, however in the long run, if I barter with most of them, then they tend to be a lot happier and hire me for future jobs...meaning more money

This is not a place for generalizations, but a place to share and debate ideas...

Sorry to see that the fingers type faster than the brain can think. I have never sold anything. How can I gouge? Also, are Rangers the only ones collecting animal resources? Go collect 20k Rancor meat and then come tell us how there is no risk involved in getting it. Better yet, go collect 10k corellian avian meat and come tell us how quickly you did it.

GilRook,

Here's the other side to the economic thing: You are a hunter. You may or may not have medical skills. Suppose you do. Suppose you pay 30k/crate to buy a crate of stims that heals for 300. Now, suppose a doctor offered you a crate of stims that heals not for 300, but for 350. How much more would you pay? Straight mathematics say that you'll probably pay 35k/crate for the 350's correct?

This is the delimma. As I've demonstated in other threads, because of how much benefit people get from buffs, and how little meat it takes, doctors can easily afford to pay 30, 40, even 100cpu for avian meat and still make 100k or more for *each* set of buff stims that they make. So they do pay that much. So rangers see that and figure all meat must be worth that much to crafters (or they figure like you do that it takes the same amount of time to hunt for herb meat than it does avian, so my price is the same). So they try to charge that much and they meet resistance. Why? Because of the *other* side of the economic picture. It would be nice if rangers could just prance around mumbling something about supply and demand, pretend that we've gotdoctor's degrees in economics, and charge whatever in the hell we want for meat, but in some cases that just doesn't work.

It takes 800 herb meat to make 1 crate of ACRDM which goes into 1 crate of stims, which raises the power by around 50 which you as a consumer you will pay 5k more for. So what does that work out to in terms of price of the herb meat? 6.25cr/u. At 6.25cr/u the doctor makes no additional money at all by using the herb meat. Any more, and they eat the difference in this example. That is what you're probably running into in this transaction. I'm frankly amazed that she'd pay 20cr/u for herb meat. That seems to me to be a little financially reckless of her.
