Thread: Why FOTM and Ranger don't mix

I have been a Ranger since Sep 03. Made Master the morning of the point adjustment, literally sprinting before server shutdown to be trained as a Master under the old system. At the time there were two other Masters on my server (both long gone). We were really rare. Three Masters in one area was a screenie.

Now we seem to be the Flavor of the Month. You can hardly swing a dead durni without hitting a ranger. It's either our tracking or our traps, or a combination of both, that draws people to the profession - rather than the real reason most of us like being a Ranger: self reliance.

The CU was good to us, in that now we can slay mighty creatures with formerly wimpy traps. Karimicu's and I easily completed Sordanna's wagers with only two droids for help. Before we would have been dead meat. Now we rock. Last night in a group we completed the Glade and had a blast doing it. MIxed group of Rangers, Jedi, a Doc and I think an MBH disguised as a Carbineer- Imps and Rebs. And the Ranger skills helped in finding the poachers and we trapped the living snot out of the big baddie in there.

So we have a ton of people coming in to Scout and Ranger. And the trapping XP whine is all you read on the Scout forum. And questions about templates here, "Is this good for killing Krayts?". And these people are going to become bored in about a month. Maybe 10% will get it, the rest I hope leave soon for other pastures. If there are any Rangers with alts - offer insane prices for Talus avian and laugh at the frustration levels. Or Tat avian, even better. Or Lok domestic (inside joke for the old timers).

Yes, every profession has a cycle. Smuggler is getting big, it was Docs a while back. It is to be expected. But the next time I trip over a "ranger" who has less than 10 badges and is asking how to make traps - or is whining over the trap xp deal - I swear I am gonna put a size 11 1/2 boot where the sun don't shine.

There are Rangers and there are rangers. To the lowercase, don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. To the minority, I am still hanging out in the same places, doing quests now and then and kicking butt on animals.

That was fun though last night, hunting in the glade, chaotic but extremely fun, though now I'm trying to think where to hang the kkwortt (why the heck did they call it some dumb ass name). Nach is a doctor/rifleman, izzagore was TKA i think, and the 3 jedi, me and gym, I think the next place we ought to conquer on the server is the space station

Avatar Space Station is lots of fun, but no creatures, all NPCs, so no traps

It's really interesting hunting with Rangers on the server, and rangers in the guild. It's a world of diffrence. The hunts with Rangers are allways well organized, there's a plan, and everyone knows their abilities. Hunts with rangers don't go so well, it was more like send the jedi in to tank, and then hit with pistoler roots, then just blast away. I tried telling everyone that there was a better way, but no one listened. Ah well.

Don't be so quick to judge new R(r)angers, though... I only started a little over a month ago, (or restarted, but that's a technicality) and I was having trouble deciding what I wanted to be. The magic of the Ranger drew me in, as I remembered fondly of the release days, sitting in camps, a god send for all, due to a lack of vehicles and player cities. So while I'm fresh, you might just be surprised to see a fellow on Starsider called Sedras, sitting in his camp, and enjoying the scenary. I might not know my way around, but I know I'll be sure to enjoy the exploring. And when "we" (if I am so included) get nerfed from popularity, very well. I'll be sitting in my camp or running around and wishing I had a feathered hat all day long.

Biggest danger I see for Rangers as whole by this new influx is that SOE will look at us by numbers onlky ans ay "oh look at all these new Rangers..it must not need much changing after all", making us fall even lower in their queue of 'revamps' that wont happen.

We are FOTM because everyone including the Rangers are using the Pdart exploit. What was the answer from our Corr? I believe it was that the Pdart is not our problem because it is a scout trap. It should be no surprise that Rangers(Pdarts+ Ranger trapping skill level), Smugglers(Concussive Shot), and Rifleman (cyborg range arms) are the FOTMs.

Rangers flavour of the month? Nah. Just because a few people have come our way doesnt make us FOTM. Perhaps the fact that we have been so low in numbers for so long has blinded but a few more people doesnt make a rush to be ranger and a few more doesnt make us fotm. Sure a few more have looked this way because of a bug but not a lot and not near enough to make us the most demanded profession out there.

It's either our tracking or our traps, or a combination of both, that draws people to the profession - rather than the real reason most of us like being a Ranger: self reliance.

I just dont get it. Shouldnt a player be able to pick up ranger for whatever reason they want? Sure some current players are misguided but you should be able to pick ranger up for the trapping, pick ranger up for the tracking or pick ranger up for the camping. Its up to them how they want to spend their skill points and what type of player they want to be, its not up to us to decide what makes a true ranger and what does not.

Since when did this profession become so elitest?

Just because people pick up ranger for a different reason than you does make you better, nor does it make them wrong. They simply have different views than you and different desires for their character. If someone wants to pick up ranger because of the trapping then go ahead, knock yourself out, if a player wants to just get tracking then like before, knock yourself out. Obviously, from the revamp i want a diverse set of 4 tiers to choose from and yeah ultimatly the complete rangers will be 4 tier spec'd but those who choose to only pick a couple of tiers should not be looked on any different, they just want something different from the template.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

That was a fun one. Took them a bit to get it fixed, too.

Well said Thortac!

Funny, but it used to be 0040 dabblers that weren't considered "real rangers" by some..

Now the 'not-real-rangers' are what? Anyone that didn't play a ranger before the CU? Master rangers who respeced? P-dart trappers? /shrug.. No.

Everyone has their own reason for playing ranger.. Whether they want to trap krayts with p-darts for loot, track for BH marks, or sit around camping in the wilderness eating onions and melons.. As long as they enjoy the profession, where's the problem?

Clarification:

Ranger - been there, done that, got the t shirt - or is here and working on it because Ranger is what they want to be. Has some (most if not all) of the location badges. Knows about the planets, not just Theed and Mos Eisley areas. Knows how to hunt and trap. Has figured out some workarounds to the broken stuff.

ranger - here for the trapping and areatrack. No clue about creatures. Seldom leaves cities unless with a group of other guildies. Gets lost going to the bathroom. Whines about the broken stuff. Generally has no clue. Tends to be a powerleveler, l33t and uber.

You will notice, nothing has been said about when the player went Ranger. Only the reasons why and general characteristics.

I went to the woods and became a rangerbecause I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
