Thread: Why FOTM and Ranger don't mix
Well I just made Jedi with my main, and have had to drop Ranger. Nothing quite like dropping Ranger for a little bit to demonstrate EXACTLY why you miss it. My favorite part of Ranger was that I could walk all around Dathomir basically unmolested. If something did pick up on me, I could burstrun for safety. Camo wasn't too useful, but the Mask Scent + Burst Run efficiency was huge. And of course, keeping the guild AS and Chefs in materials is a great thing.A reallyy nice change with the CU... camps get popular again. Mainly so that the entertainers can inspire the hunters once again, but hell, any reason to have people kicking it with you in a nice camp is cool with me.
First thing I have been doing with my alt is getting Ranger back. However here, I must confess that I fully intend to build up for pearl diving on a desert planet, by very reason of my main having become a Jedi. People who are complaining about the Trap XP have no idea... it's not difficult, it only requires that you perhaps forswear the group-grind to Uber in a day like people are used to.
Rangers, capital R, are those who understand the Australian aboriginal concept of "walkabout" vicerally. I like Yavin for walkabouts, Dathomir gets a bit too busy in places.
you know when i first saw SWG in a box in gamestop lo these many years ago, lol, i decided not to buy it until I saw the first Prima games manual. The very first profession i saw that caught my eye was scout, then i saw that there as an elite profession, Ranger. It was cool, setting up my first camp, i was calling my wife in the room, yelling " this is soo cool." of course she lookedat me like I was an idiot, patted me on the shoulder and said "thats nice hon."
And this was the neat idea, it said that "at the master level the scout learns to forage up to 3 items at a time, master scouts may continue thier studies by becoming rangers, squad leaders (hmm) creature handlers (hmm, ok). or alternaty a master scout may become a Rancher." now that was a cool idea!
So i checked out the ranger explaination on pg 249 and i was hooked. ( my ideas was to become a ranger rancher, and start a ranch called the "Double R")
Now alot has changed in the 2 years ive been playing off and on, i went away for 6 months while my wife started a character and started playing, so i came back and played whenever i got a chance, I mastered ranger the first time after 6 months of playing! So it was obvious i wasnt in a hurry. I traveled the Dune Sea, tried for months to go to Dathomir and when i finnaly did, i was sweating and worried i was going to die, i did, but not before i got to the nightsister home! (yeah i read the books in the EU)
so anyway, i was looking at my character sheet and noticed that i didnt have a lot of badges. Hmm strange, then it hit me, i was so busy making camps and looking around, i dont think i knew what a badge was then. So im going to go traveling around, trying to get all the location badges, and do the corvette (lol, which i still havent done) and generally try to make up for lost badge time. So keep in mind that yea, some ppl respec, same as they did when the holo's said, "do ranger" and yea some ppl arent as hardcore as us. but once they become a ranger, and get embraced by the ranger community, most times they stay a ranger.
we have a great profession, great forums and usualy great players in the Ranger field.
lest strive to keep it that way!
btw devs, i still like the Rancher idea!

wait wait wait wait......wait one second..... Who the crap gave you the right to welcome anyone on behalf of the Ranger forum..... I am not saying I have that right either.....anyway.
I think what myself and JB and others are talking about is the spoonfed, bottlefeeding, want everything handed to them, dont want to work for nothing, the world owes me something, cry babies. Yes, they can respect to whatever their heart desires..... they have that freedom. and I respect their right to choose. And we are not talking about Rangers here.....we are talking about rangers here. weekend warriors..... respeced so I could hunt Krayt kinda people. The ones that see Ranger as a nice way to make a pearl inventory.... not as a way of life. The ones that respeced to THE roleplaying profession, but dont care about roleplaying.....
Itis these ones that will get our prof nerfed again. When traps get fixed and they have to WORK to solo ANYTHING, then they cry... I personally prefer only having a handful of Rangers on each server... (not that I have any control over that), because this prof IS elite. And that is the way we like it.
My 2 cents!

Maybe 10% will get it, the rest I hope leave soon for other pastures. If there are any Rangers with alts - offer insane prices for Talus avian and laugh at the frustration levels. Or Tat avian, even better. Or Lok domestic (inside joke for the old timers).Yes, every profession has a cycle. Smuggler is getting big, it was Docs a while back. It is to be expected. Funnily enough, all the pre-revamp Bounty Hunters said similar things about the new "respec" Bounty Hunters. I guess some people just don't like newbies (not "noobs", "newbies").
I'm just waiting to see the comments about the new wave of Master Rangers not being as "ranger-like" as the old guard because they didn't have to grind out the frontieering line.
/sigh
As for the stereotype of ones who want everything given to them, and to be "spoonfed". Well they're no different to how we used to be, i.e. zero knowledge. Quick answer - Leave them alone, don't b!tch at them and don't help them. They'll have to work things out on their own pretty damn fast. [Sarcasm]Then if they do, they might be just lucky enough to be able to come on here and be considered equals[/Sarcasm].
On the other hand, you could do what I've done in the past, and take it upon your self to school them in how to be a proper Ranger.

hmmm, I like your way of thinking......dont help them and let them sink or swim....and if they swim....welcome....rofl....cool!
Of course I will help them.....but come on man....the first one that cames to me and says..."how do I make a trap", or how do I solo a Krayt...." AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!. you feel me? I will help ANYONE who wants to be a better Ranger. But I pity the ones that come to me, JB, or most of the others wanting trap making secrets or Krayt hunting tactics.....lol
I know that not all of them are here strickly for Krayts.... I did not steriotype ALL RESPECS....I said those who _______
If they are a novice scout and are asking how to make a trap, I somehow find that quite forgivable. I'd presume they've just never been a scout before, or any other type of crafting profession and thus haven't been exposed to that side of the game before. As a contrast, remember the first time you used a crafting station to experiment on your Ranger camo kits? If you'd never been a crafter before, didn't it all feel a bit weird?

Im sorry but maybe you missed the fact that we are taslking about RESPEC master rangers.....if a scout came to me asking for help on ANYTHING...I would help.
and no....I didnt feel weird when I made my first schematic for a trap or camo gear. I thought it was cool, but never wierd.
Look man, I think we are argueing about something stupid.... I am talking about those that have the title master ranger, but only through respec, and only to hunt krayts.... I am not talking about.....(nor do I think JB is talking about) those that used respec to get past a horrible trap grind, and are interested in learning more about being a Ranger.

Then I guess you better get ready to do a lot of fighting, unless you expect someone tojust sit there and take a size 11 1/2. Last I checked, this game--this profession--is for everyone, and where all this damn elitist crap is coming from is beyond me. I've been an off and on Ranger, and that sure as hell doesn't mean your sh!t doesn't stink better than mine cause you been aranger longer. Like I've told some of the other folks on Starsider who are PvP elitists: until you're prepared to pay for someone's account, don't tell them what they can or can't do with THEIR account, or tell them they can't choose a profession for whatever reason.
People who are new to Ranger, welcome. I hope you find something good here for you, and welcome to the club. Do what you feel is right for YOU, and not what a few tell you you can't be causeof a few rangers blowing their own trumpets at the expense of your fun and curiosity. And you don't have to master to be treated to as a true ranger. Just have it in your heart to be one, not because you have to be a ranger since launch to get respect orbecause you have to pick up ranger for X and Y reason. It's your dime, do whatever the HELL you want.
My 2 cents...
i was drawn to this proffesion because of the preffesionalism
i see on these forums, but i geuss every prof has people who think they
are better then everyone how comes after.
Thanks for warm welcome.
To the rest of the rangers out there i am always looking for advice from
those who came before, i hope you dont take offense like this mo.
i wrote this yesterday, but the forum ate it... so i figured the fates saved me some embarrassment... but, here i am, next day, posting again...
Owen-Lars wrote:
Since when did this profession become so elitest?
it's damn near always been this way... even before i showed my face on the forums...
it all comes from the fact that the ranger profession has always been sub-par, as far as abilities and power in the game... this means that the people that choose to be a ranger, do so because of the potential of the profession... they see something special in it, and do it for the sake of being called a "ranger"... naturally, when there's a small group of people only bound by a small set of interests, they tend to develop and "us" and "them" philosophy... in the case of rangers, "us" are the people who choose a profession (ranger) for what they want it to be, "them" are the people who choose a profession for the power it gives them...
of course, it feels that the "us" have a more noble reason for choosing a profession... this leads to a lot of resentment towards the folks that don't share the same reasons... it's rarely ever shown so vividly as it is when someone comes into the forum displaying "them's" attitude...
rangers have been somewhat of a clique for a long time... any newcomer to the forums can tell you that... granted, it's no jr. high school girl's club clique... it is welcoming, and friendly... but it is pretty tough to prove yourself as a worthy member...
as far as ranger goes as a FotM... it isn't... and i doubt it ever will be... anybody who chooses to be a ranger for the power of the profession, as it is now, is stupid... there are better ways to get the same power... combat medic, for example,is and has been better thanranger at what a lot of us want ranger to be, plus some... and it's cheaper...
this means that all the folks who pick up ranger for power are doing it for one of two reasons: a) they are stupid, b) they are doing it at least in some small way for camps, harvesting, tracking, and all the other ranger abilities... that means that the folks in group b) are actually doing it for the same reason a lot of us picked it up... can't fault them for that... and i really doubt there are that many folks that are in group a)...
i'm not gonna stick up for JB... mostly because i don't think he needs it, i know he can take as much as he can dish out... i will say that he's just about the only person on this forum who has the right to post like he does... i don't know where he nabbed that right, but it's his now... everybody knows what they are getting into when they read one of his posts... even when i disagree with what he's saying, there's something comforting about having heard him say it...
and i'm not even gonna talk about the p-dart... just that nobody here can call that "tactics"...
ok... it's a little more concise than what i wrote yesterday, and a lot less fun to read since i wasn't loopy on sleeping pills... looks like another wasted post though... i should just stick with the funny posts...
