Thread: Why be a Ranger?

I was looking at all the professions, and came across Ranger. It kind of perked my interest, but then again... why?

Why are you a Ranger, and what do you enjoy most about it? I am thinking of picking it up just because it seems cool, but I want to hear your stories first.

If twelve people respond to this thread, you'll probably get thirteen different opinions, but here are my two credits:

As it stands right now, Ranger is almost more of a state of mind than anything else for some people -- myself included. Sure, we get some neat toys, like huge camps (I never, ever, ever get tired of seeing the High Tech Field Base) and a few new traps. We can also crawl really fast.

And let's not forget tracking: several of the holocrons that my guildmates have used were acquired because I tracked the Jedi or Force users that dropped them. In fact, there are quite a few dabblers who only enter the Ranger tree for the tracking skill.

But mostly, I play a Ranger because it fits my character. I make most of my money in-game by selling organic resources, and as a Ranger I can collect more of said resources. I really just like the idea of the class more than anything else, above all else.

That's right now, though. We will be getting some really cool lovin' in the future, and right now we have the single best correspondent in the game. Period. No question about it. Rangers are also a really neat sub-community of their own: for example, you don't see pistoleers or TKAs banding together the way this Ranger community does. When we see one of our own, almost without question, you'll witness an immediate sense of mutual respect and fellowship. I like that fellowship.

I could go on all day, but those are my main reasons for loving this class above all others.

Believe it or not, if you can organize other rangers to help... you can make a nice living. Not quite the many millions a merchant can, but thousands and thousands enough to be comfortable. The HTFB looks cool

Firstly,

Im a Ranger first, then a pistoleer some of my favorite fictional characters have been Roland in Stephen King's Dark Tower series and Aragorn

I enjoy the ability to go solo or be effective in a group. The money making opportunities are amazing and I have fun doing it.

Being a ranger allows you access to some of the more amazing parts of the galaxy that few would dare to tread.

The toys, such as the camps and traps and camo kits are essential for good group and solo play, and they are working much better now.

The ranger community on the boards and Lowca are amazing, we share information, I have yet to see a flame war like on various other boards, we give each other tips and suggestions without hoarding info. When someone new comes into the board asking a question that we have seen hundreds of time, they are politely given that info and directed to our faq for more info.

Our correspondant is fair, thoughtful, thourough and amazing. I often do searches to read his input and advice

We have an active wish list that promotes ranger independance and community interdependance, some of the ideas are great others just plain weird. However, all ideas are respected and debated without insult.

I love being a ranger, but the community keeps me being a ranger

Rangers are the most self sufficient people on any planet.

If they can get a decent barter system working, they about never need money. If you do need quick cash, go harvest some beasties, tailors and docs will buy what you got in a second. We get creature to hit bonuses. makes dropping beasts easier. And the harvesting bonus is handy, they get 10, we get 15.

We go where we want, when we want, and seldom worry about the red mob on the hill, we wander on past most of the time, ala camo and maskscent.

We can find anybody or anything when we put our minds to it, areatrack is a wonderful thing.

Wounded, pop a camp and set a spell, you get healed free. Only BF is a concern, which is the only reason I ever go into a town, that and to get missions.

PvE? Best recon people around. Most of us have enough points to about master a weapon elite, and some left over for medic if you want.

Hungry, need a short term buff? Forage for some stuff, to include bait to catch fish. Beats having to pay a chef.

Yeah, Rangers are underrated, laffed at, made fun of, but most of the time, when the fecal matter has hit the fan in the weeds, you are glad we are around.

Rangers lead the way

PS, we are really the only people who can wear camo and not look like geeks

Why be a ranger? Right now, not many reasons, but the future looks BRIGHT. Like many, I just like the idea of the ranger. As soon as I saw the profession, I knew I would love it (and still do!!!). As things stand right now, Rangers are fairly stable with a few bugs (camps not repelling aggro, last trap in a stack not working). I don't think there is anything that would make me say the profession is broken, which may make this the only profession that isn't.

Harvests and tracking. I've found that to be the best bang per skill point in the Ranger Tree.

Now how this works out nice for is, Say Armorsmith A wants Wooly hide and DOC B wants Herby meat. Find a planet that has both of em. If possible Group because now with %60 harvests it pays to group. mister Ch with those nice pet tanks can harvest as well.

I'll group up other players and tell them from the start 4-8k credits per 1k of hide/meat/bone which I turn around and sell for 12-50 cpu depending on the quaility. The group now has a better reason to hunt. Double income harvest and Mission Payout. I usually can pull a small 20% -30 % profit on this but hey it works. and you keep customers happy with large amounts of Organic Resources.

On Radiant we have a chat Channel Called
RIN - Ranger Information Network which is a Chat channel that anyone hunting or looking for scout/ranger harvests can come and chit chat with all of us at one time.

I discovered that any class in the game can walk from point a to point b, now how easy the walk is a whole nother story. I found that most of ranger wasn't worth the skill point investment at this point in the game. In the future if things change I might head back to master ranger.

Its all about playing with what makes you happy BOTTOM LINE

Those characters are cool as hell.

1) I enjoy Ranger because I can survive in the wilderness without a problem. I get hurt, NP, pop up the HTFB and boom I heal myself.

2) I can track anything which makes my character very useful in the either a hunting party or soloing and I'm looking for some creatures to gain XP.

3) The conceal and maskscent features are awesome especially when it comes to high level planets, you can get to where you want to go without being attacked by every creature you encounter.

4) I like to think of my character being a Tradoshan as a wilderness survival buff so that's the chose Ranger as well as TKA. It's that one with nature bit.

I am a ranger because I have always enjoyed the outdoors, be it hunting or fishing. Being a Ranger in the game has allowed me to do all of this and a little more. It also fits my character somewhat in that he was thrown out onto the streets when his parents were slain and forced to survive on his own.

When I purchased SWG my plan was to be a Master CH/Master Pistoleer. On my quest to get Novice Scout I fell in love with the Scout Profession. I saw a lot of possibilities with it. When I saw a MasterRanger's High Tech Field Base I couldn't get it out of my mind. I did some reading on the boards and found out that it was basically just an advanced scout class, but I realized my guild could probably use a Ranger. I started liking the idea of being a Master CH/Master Ranger..That combination would make me a true Masterof theWild.

Weeks after becoming a Ranger they announced the tracking/new traps/new camps/camoufalge aspect of the game which was a real bonus. I've been a Master Ranger now for over a month, and I still love it. I still haven't mastered CH, but I don't get a lot of hunting time in since I am also the leader of a guild and my alternate character is the mayor of our city.

This is exactly why you never want your character to have kids in a RPG game. As soon as you do, you've signed your own death warrant.

OK, I would add something more constructive except all the reasons I play a ranger, and stay a Master Ranger, have already been stated.

Bottom line, I loved all aspects of the scouting tree and was glad to see there was an elite profession that advanced scouting skills. I'm going to master carbineer because carbine was my favorite arm of the marksman tree. Simple. No big philosophies. Now that I know what I enjoy about the game, I can role-play accordingly. Oh...and a lot of you who hate or enjoy ranger, but negatively think it is just a super scout class make me say, "Duh?" LOL. Yeah. So what is your point? Isn't every elite class just a "super" class of its base profession/s. With the exception of maybe bio-engineer and a couple others. Take bounty hunter for example, isn't it just super marksman with the additionalpainful irritation of the investigation line? Aren't the elite weapons lines just super weapons lines? Even without the "big patch", I'd still be trekking to master ranger because I enjoy that aspect of the game and if fits my character.
