Thread: Where are all the Rangers?

A few weeks back I was looking to hire a Ranger/Scout to hunt with me, track some avian spawn, etc.. I looked for 3 hours from Theed to Coronet. I started at offering 100K per RL hour spent ... then upped it to 200K by the end of the third hour of looking... I sent /tells to those Ranger I could find through the searchable characters... and either didnt get a response or got an 'I dont do that' (and no offense, if you dont do that.. what the hell do you do?)... anyway... is this one of the many dying professions or was this just a bad day for finding Rangers?

Sounds like you had a bad day. Rangers are pretty few and far between though. And that's after a small jump in the amount of rangers in game too. Try to see if there is a Ranger Information Network(RIN) channel on your server. That's usually the best way to find us.

Well...what we do is this: Spend a few hours each week tracking down the best resources in the current shift. Spend as much time as possible collecting huge stacks of good resources that we can sell to doctors, Armorsmiths, chefs, BE and various others. Spend a few minutes actually enjoying a relaxing moment as a shift ends and you don't have to kill 10,000 kaduu's a day to meet a contract you took. Many spend a half hour or so in game answering tells from Jedi's asking us to track for creature, BH's asking us to track for Jedi's, and badge-hunters asking us to track for the Hero quests. So many of us choose to hunt rather than track since often times, in terms of credits per hour, it's a higher payoff. Sometimes it's not...but I'd still rather hunt some dangerous critters than listen to someone go "did you find it yet" or something like that.
In the end, Rangers are a lot more than mere trackers. And you're not the only one asking us to track, so oftentimes we'll go anon. just to get a little peace. Go to a crowded planet where there are animals that jedi have to hunt and you'll get 17 tells before you step off the shuttle. Go anywhere near the squill cave and you'll get bombarded with people asking you to track. Oftentimes the people asking for our help don't pay or refuse to pay unless we find something. That adds up to a lot of time/engergy/frustration, with little payoff. So don't be offended if Rangers ignore you or respond that they don't do that. The likelyhood is that they've been burned in the past or they just don't choose to make credits that way. A better bet would be to offer a Ranger a chance to hunt with you. Offer to take some missions with them and then, when they're there, ask if they'd mind checking every so often for an avian spawn. That way you actually meet them and get to know them and you aren't simply another person bombarding them with "hey uz track 4 me? i pay if u find!!!".
In the end, Rangers are a dying breed, but the larger problem is this type of assignment is rather boring. It may not have been a good day to find a Ranger, but I also think that many Rangers wouldn't do this type of thing, unless there was something more for them than simply driving 500 meters, hoping off the ride, /areatracking, getting on the vehicle, going 500 meters, getting off the vehicles, /areatracking, getting on the ride....I'm getting bored just typing out that scenario, you can imagine how mind-numbingly boring it is to do for an hour.

I can sympathize.. I get the 'hey can you come rez me' scenario in BFE Endor.. get there to find the corpse surrounded by 18 SBDs.. LOL and I have done my share of being anonymous on the server and 'fake' being AFK.
My question wasnt a cut on the Ranger profession, simply a question about the state of your profession. I rarely see anyone aside from novice scout (most likely a noob who hasnt figured out how to change their title) and I almost NEVER see a Master Ranger. I was reading some of your other threads, and what you think need improved within the profession (every profession has their 'want' list) and am surprised (no offense again) at how limited the Ranger profession is 
On a side note:
are you happy about the BH tree being changed? have you seen this impact your profession greatly?
sorry to be a pest, just curious

At my point in the game I couldn't give a Wom Rat's butt about credits. I've got enough to live on comfortably, and I can always run a few missions if I need to. Therefore, I only do what's fun in the game. At the moment that's not very much, and I've been playing other games instead =)
Imagine if the one thing your class could do was tedious, boring, and only semi-rewarding credit-wise. Would you be jumping at the offer to do it for the millionth time?

I hate tracking because it's boring and it gets no results honestly. The times I've tracked for people the non ranger is always finding the target before I do. I do not track for anyone outside my guild. I might track for a few close friends, *if* I'm in the mood. But lately, I've been getting the feeling that the only reason why they ask me join them on hunt (friends, not guild) is only for my tracking abilities and not for my company, or my ability to fight. So, I am thinking about just saying no to ANYONE who wants me to track for them. I prefer to hunt resources rather than track.

If it was worth your time to hunt Corellian avian spawn, why wouldn't it be worth my time to hunt them?
And grouped with you, I lose 40% of my harvest.
Starting to make sense?
100k an hour? I made more than that after I found a spawn site for devil gulginaws and carrion spats - 6k in 90 mins at 110cpu. You do the math. And I sure as heck would not share where I was, it was a virtual gold mine for me.
Anyhow, personally, I do not track for pay - unless it is something I know I can find in 15 mins or less and you are paying me for an hour or any part of that hour, and my job ends at the first spawn we ( me ) find.

that happens to me a lot of it pisses me off greatly, because not only do I not get paid but I also feel totally shown-up.
and secondly.. when did Jango Fett say "always nice to meet a ranger." ... anyone know?

"Novice Scout". I tend to run with my novice scout flag up as it means I don't get hassled* by people looking for somebody to find them that cussed moisture farmer.
I progress through my profession by earning XP not coin. I only earn XP for killing or avoiding things. I don't get any XP for finding that damned moisture farmer.
On the odd occaisions I take a tracking contract, today for example, I find myself surrounded by a bunch of fierce red NPCs or critters and some uber toon who is now focused on earning HIS XP and can't understand why I'm lying on my back counting boids. 'twas nice seeing the inside of yet another clone centre
(Can't they decorate them some different? Or put up a "Welcome to..." sign? )
I do head out with groups, of people I know, usually to get resources for our doc or to get a new character some XP. LOL, it's the only time I feel 'nearly'uber, leading a brand new novice out of Eisley.
Having said that, am available for hire, 100k/hour or part thereof, just don't blame me when I don't find anything before you spot it on the radar yourself. It's just /areatrack scare off critters...

My reasons to say no to these types of requests
- It's boring
- There are easier and faster ways to make money as a ranger
- My bank account is big enough to last the rest of my playing days if I stop buying paintings, av-21's, etc
- Areatrack is too buggy for these type of hunts, I only use it when I'm harvesting as a tool to give me an extra edge
- Explaining that areatrack is too buggy takes a lot of typing in-game, "no thank you, not interested" is easier
- Hate to see people disappointed after paying 100kand getting noresults
- I'm a "focused" player, usuallylog in with a couple of goals I want to achieve during that session, fitting in a 3 hour hunt is hard
- Dynamic spawns are usually low during peak time, reducing the usefullness of areatrack even further. These requests are mostly done during peak time

No offence taken at all. We know who we are, what we are, and what we are good for or not good for. Sometimes it makes us sad. We have coined a phrase. "Ranger is a lifestyle, not a profession." It is completely true.
About the only time I use tracking is looking for a non mission critter, or if I can't get missions for it, like the current Talus Avian. Otherwise I"m hunting by missions. For the time, its fast harvesting.
I'm fine with the change in BH scout skills. I thought it should have been that way. The only thing it seemed to do was drop any BH that dabbled in Ranger for tracking. Which in my eyes is good for us. Less dabblers, and now the BH have to hire a "true" ranger to track for them. I only jedi hunt with my guild BH. But with the new droids, our tracking is actually a lot slower and waaaaay less accurate.
