Thread: A Quick Introduction

As Ive said before, I have some huge shoes to fill, and i hope that i can live up to the expectations set by the prior corrs.

As most of you already know me, and my thoughts, therefore I will be brief.

We all know that the ranger revamp is coming, and there are going to be a lot of debates: as there already have been about the future of ranger.

Firstly:
debate is good, thoughtful discussions about pre-reqs, skills, abilities and inter-profession relationships is a very good thing and will always be encouraged. Unfortunately, when debate breaks down into personal attacks nothing productive can accomplished.

As the revamp happens, i will be on TC often (Agon' Thalia) and will be active with the ranger community in reporting the results of the testing experiments and bug finding on the forums.

Probably the biggest thing that i want to keep in the ranger skills is tracking, and i hope to be gathering information from the community to prevent the deletion of tracking from our arsenal. (of course, it goes without saying, the ranger hat)

I think that the energy, fervor and cameraderie that exists in our forums is what makes us unique, and i will defend that. When trolls, flames, and other nastiness breaks out, i will do what i can to prevent it as well as rely on the rangers here to keep their forums fun, lively and a good place to bounce ideas around.

I respect and appreciate all the rangers here and I will do what i can to make sure that we have a good time ingame and in the forums.

I think ive started rambling... and im sure that i will think of more stuff to say.

in closing,
/salute Rangers

we will soon be able to lead the way.

I'm sure you're gonna do a wonderful job, Agon. The community couldn't have asked for a better person to take over. I'm sure we're going to be in very good hands. If I may suggest a few things:

We REALLY need to update the stickies as soon as possilbe. Obviously, we'll have to wait until this stuff hits TC to update the FAQs and stuff, but you might want to start commisioning people to write certain aspects. We'll need a new Ranger top 5 issues as well, and probably need to update the "categories" that Owen wrote since there no longer really is a "Ranger Camp".

Obviously, a lot of these changes hinge on what we find out about our revamp and stuff, but we need to start looking forward.

Things I think should be our "Top 5" (not in any particular order)

1) Concerns about pre-reqs

2) Concern about role in GCW

3) Concern over loss of tracking

4) Questions about feasability of Master Scout templates

5) Concern about loss of "job" in SWG. Right now, we're harvestors, but we're turning into combat toons, but unlike other combat toons have no skills during combat. How will we fare running missions solo? Will that provide adequate income? Or are we going to become looters, expected to steal for our living?

Anything I can do to help of course, feel free to ask.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

Welcome aboard, Agon! Congrats on becoming our new corr and I hope you have fun doing it, or what's the point, right?

I just have one concern with your opening remarks and maybe we can all talk about it in the coming days. I agree that tracking is one of the defining characteristics of rangers, both current and future. However, if the current tracking system stays in place, I feel it will render some of our new systems useless. Those include the tracking beacon, bio sensor probe and the motion sensor beacon.

I never really liked the idea of standing out in the middle of nowhere and "automatically" knowing where everything was around me via "ESP". I understand the utility of it, but the role-play aspect of it just seems a little fake. The new droid system for tracking, to me, seems more realisting and interactive.

I have a couple questions to consider asking the devs...

1. Will our tracking beacons work similar to our current "ESP" method? Will the beacons give a readout ofthe creatures, players, NPCs and their locations to us via technical means? If this is the case, then we are losing nothing and gaining a more realistic system.

2. Will the bio sensor probe allow us to acquire the bio signatures of creatures and then program the probe to use the DNA to find creatures of like DNA within a given area? If this is the case, then we are gaining a system that will help us tremendously.

Again, I think tracking has its place, but a more realistic system would be better than what we have now.

Tracking will be back when/if they ever rewrite the legacy spawn system. At fanfest they said they have about 20 different ways of spawning lairs, this needs to be reduced to like 5. Perhaps then you'll be seeing a time when the terrain and creatures can be loaded in from 500 meters or more, instead of the 100 to 150 meters you see now if you stand in one place long enough on a server reset day. I disagree that this should be in the top 5. And I definately don't think it's worth fighting over. In a future incarnation a better system will need to be created, one where entity type is available from the command line, the dialog boxes dissappear entirely, and perhaps tracks that look like the targets are outlined or highlighted on the terrain in the general direction. Area tracking as it currently works needs to be removed, direction, distance and name are simply too unreal for the kind of information to be obtained from a print.

Here is what I think should be the top five after the revamp.

Monkey Making
Role in GCW
Combat specials and viability
Pre-reqs
Armor cert

Howdy Agon. I psuedo lurk around here, but enjoy the conversations.

-----
Iconic professions. Ok. Chewbacca was a Scout. How come that didn't stay?

When you think about it, aren't almost all of the original professions iconic? You can find something on each of them in the Expanded Universe.

I miss being a Ranger. It was more than a profession, it was a virtual way of life. It wasn't for everyone. But those who took it up became family.

Congratulations again AgonThalia!

I'm definitely pleased that you've been chosen as the voice of Rangers, and I've always been impressed with your posts. Don't worry about filling Calc's shoes, he's a leexard... he doesn't have any! (Just watch out for those pesky tailors trying to get you drunk on Mandalorian wine and get you to fit into Calc's OTHER clothing items... )

I'd agree with with a few others said about our "top 5", with pre-reqs, GCW role, combat ability/specials & Ranger weapons / hat, monkey making opportunities, and some better idea of what might happen with tracking (whether it goes to scout or somehow gets integrated to our traps and abilities to do biosigs and tracking beacons and such - that would be cool). I'll also gladly offer whatever support I can to help test or write up things. Definitely interesting times, these.
