Ok children - THE voice of the "grumpy old ranger" (I just had a b-day too) - Harken and pay heed

AFK Macros are the easy way out. Any moron can engage them - and doing so results in "Moron Masters".

"But you can camp once and know all there is to know about camping." - yes, yes you do. Sorta. But that's not the point.

Camping is secondary to the hunting, and hunting different animals is where you learn Ranger skills. How many of y'all gained most of your XP on one planet? I know I did. Then, I realized I needed to branch out, and started traveling. How many earned most of your XP with the same people - same arguement, except nowthe qeustion is "and what traps work best with what fighting styles" - we are support, learn how to support.

The camps were always secondary. It was the fun of the hunt. I dropped camps so we could heal ourselves and pets, dump some mind damage by listening to the entertainer, maybe craft some more traps or stims if needed. It was just a break in place, a respite, that usually was as much fun as the hunt - as we ragged on one another for any stupid stuff we did - real and imagined.

AFK campers - all alone, crafting on a macro, usually within sight of a city. Yeah, you learn a ton of stuff that way. Lots of fun too. Reminds me of an old song - "take a trip and never leave the farm" - well they can master and never really leave sight of the city. We are not impressed.

There are two types of people in this profession - Rangers and rangers. If you are here to grind the profession, fine - don't expect me to answer any of your silly azz questions about what to trap/harvest/do to get the most XP in the shortest time. Get your ranger and move along. I will swear at you under my breath - dumbazz is the new key phrase by the way.

To the Rangers - and yes - you can tell the difference - no questions are stupid. Wait I take that back - most questions are not stupid. Ask, and if I know, I will respond. If I don't know, I may go try and find out. Regardless, your posts I read and respond to.

That's all for now - nuff said - now go kill rasps

I'm with ya here, JB. I hate the idea of someone sitting in a camp just outside the city boundry, crafting 'till they're blue in the face (this happens quicker if they're Mon Cals) and then masking scent/concealing, hopping on a speeder and driving around planets till they get the XP.

I know why so many rangers (not Rangers) hate the trapping line....it's a lot harder to AFK trap. So they come and go "what oh what should I do to get the maximum XP with the minimum amount of skill or desire." I love it when they ask that. But hey, I do my best to answer them. The faster they're gone, the better our profession is.

Honestly, AFK gameplay is silly. There's no skill involved and how can you get enjoyment from crafting hundreds of camps. OoooOOOOoooHHH, I just learned the newest camp! Now I can grind a DIFFERENT camp. Wheeeee!

The best thing to come out of you grinding and trolling the boards for advice on how to cheat your way through our proffession is that our community comes together and gets to see how many people are willing to go the cheap and easy route. Not only that, but we all the grumpy old Rangers come out of the woodwork and grumble and stir....it's a wonderous sight. While I am haven't gotten to the Grumpy Old Ranger state yet, I am on my way...I swear by the time we get the fixes for the Ranger proffession, I'll be a GOR. I can't wait.

This is horrible! I return to find my new title on the forum is "Jedi". What's up with that? If they wanted to confer that I'm rare and learned, they'd make my title RANGER. and then make it camo colored.

I remember the old days.....

when we still had to walk everywhere, TN was essential, camps were useful... all of my rangering skills came from every single planet.

I still meet people who have never been to Rori or Talus.. too bad, its nice there.

The old days were nice. I miss them. I remember needing 10 people to take down a bantha (and where traps actually helped doing it) and then flying off to Dathomir to make some money on Giant Baz Nitch missions (they were non agro, didn't db, and moved really slowly--you just had to burstrun around the lair shooting it to get 11k. Did I mention the lairs had very little HAM as well?). Once decent weapons were readily available (and after I got a decent pet), I started travelling around the various planets. I would spend a week or two on a planet before moving on (it took that long to properly explore a planet on foot). And I could go into almost any city and still find other players. Oh, and frontiering took forever.

Nowadays, Giant Baz Nitches are hard and Banthas can be killed by a single novice marksman. Planets can be explored in a few hours by speeder (at least all the "POIs"--I wonder how many people actually realize that there are a LOT more things to see than just the labelled POIs). And Ranger can be mastered in a day (not to mention most other professions).

Oh, I forgot to mention corpse runs. Those were fun. I remember the days of wandering 12k away from the nearest cloning center (uninsured, of course, because I didn't have any money) and getting clobbered by something. Then you'd have a Bothan running around in his underwear to get his stuff back. That was a lot of fun (although it did waste a lot of time and had a few bugs). I almost wish we still had corpse runs but then I remember how easy a speeder would make it.

Did all that camping make you arrogant or did you start off that way? .....j/k.....

When I hunt with large groups, they rarely want to camp. When I hunt by myself, I rarely need to camp. Camps don't keep out anything. Until camps protect people, speed up healing, provide a real hunting base with mission terminals or DO ANYTHING AT ALL why bother.

I afk macroed my way through camping, because it was boring and pointless. I enjoyed the trapping and harvesting. I love being a ranger, But I hate camping. So I guess I'm "Stupid".

Yeah, you should know

(j/k) It was his 2nd time mastering ranger he did it in a day.

I have to admit my scout/trapping/wilderness xp is limited to Corellia and Dathomir. I also have to admit that I didn't start playing this game tillmid february (I hate the6 to 12 monthsafter launch of a new mmorpg). It only looks better when you look back on it. I've been a ranger since late february (my neighbour plays since last beta, you learn a lot from watching :smileywink and haven't want to give it up for a single moment. Being a ranger now for 2-3 months I would only call myself a Ranger on 3 planets. Still learning on the seven others.

Parts of our profession may be broken, otherparts not really worth the skillpoints but put on the Master Ranger tag in-game and in your head, driveaway from the city, step off, walk, explore and huntand and you'll have more fun then guarding the TC as MBH or fighting on the edges of dath/endor as a Jedi. And we have the best community of the game ofcourse

When I first mastered ranger I did it the regular way. I camped in weird places as I hunted. I remember one great time sitting on Dath in a HTFB within view of a NS Eldar. Then watching groups of people run up, attack, get killed and then have the doc rez them over and over. I and my guildies enjoyed sitting up there yelling: "Newbs!" Hehe.

Trapping I finished up at Theed, Naboo. Ikopi stags are great to trap on and move slow as Christmas. I earned that. All of my scouting xp I gained from killing. When I dropped Ranger and harvested the first time it said: You have lost 160k of scouting xp.. Felt bad about that.

I am presently doing some inorganic resource harvesting for some guildies but after that I will grind my way back up to 4-(maybe 4)-4-0. Til Traps are worth it I wont bother with it and just use those points for Artisan.

Rori,

That's lke my backyard almost. Ya wanna talk about having a planet all to yourself (sweet). I did Ranger the hard way, I have seen every planet , walked a couple of them twice.

Ya wanna talk about gettin pissed at camp grinders, go to theed. Now there is always three to four guys with camps right next to the bridge. I swim across that river, don't give them the satisfaction.

I am guilty. Not of the AFK camp grinding but of the maskscent on a speeder on Endor. When I figured that out I thought it was great and did it for about two hours. Never did it again after that however. Just didn't seem right.
I've been playing since launch. Because of my playstyle I didn't make ranger until sometime in February. I miss the days of walking around and not having mounts or speeders. Now, as I work up the ranger tree I only consider myself a ranger, not a Ranger. I must atone for my past sins.
I also have a lot of exploring to do. I am also guilty of speeding around to all the POIs just to get the badges. I am aware that there are so many more things to see in this game. Since I've only really hunted on Tattoine I know I am very inexperienced. I have a lot of tactics to learn.
That said, I agree with the opening post entirely. I am not a fan of hologrinders and even less of a fan of people who plan on sticking around and still insist on grinding. Learn the skill! Experience points don't mean that you actually have the necessary experience to use that skill effectively. Learn it, experience it, master it, and become a Ranger.
Until that day, so long fellow rangers, I've got some tactics to master.

I will come out of my closet. I camped the Theed bridge for a couple of boxes of survival, and I walked all over Dathomir masked, and got a majority of my scout xp. I don't feel the least bit guilty, as i only get to play once or twice a week. I had to get xp where i could. It took me the better part of five months to hit master, and I sure as hell ain't gettin' rid of it.

Again, JB, you nailed it right on

While I'm only 1/4th most of the Rangers here, I still share their pain. I did go through all of scouting- doing it the old fashioned way. I killed and harvested what I killed. I set up camps when we needed to heal. (By the way, to the moron who posted earlier saying "Camps don't do anything for you" You're wrong. They have a heal modifier that actually helps you heal faster. Had you ever been hurt and sat in a camp, you'd notice it.) And then I'd go on hunting trips with my buddies and craft every trap I could, and just spam trapping. They didn't mind because they were my friends. They wanted me to master it. I didn't mind cause I was having fun. You knwo how fun it is to get 5-8 state effects on a bantha? Plus my buddies were doing KD's and poisons (one's a TKA, the other's a CM) so we were really slaughtering them!

My story is similar to many here.. I did my share of AFK camping, but I damn sure didn't do it near a city. Hell, these days especially, I avoid cities except for my own home in Keris Tava, like the plague. This wookiee turns a shade of green under his fur whenever he has to entera city zone.

I don't feel any real guilt about AFK camping. Maybe JB'll think less of me for doing it, but maybe he won't really care, because I am a Ranger. I live it, I love it. I camp to heal my wounds. I actually refuse free buffs on a regular basis, because I don't need 'em. I actually found 3 POIs on Yavin without knowing they were POIs until I checked the tab. If I'm not in an all-fired hurry for a specific reason or if it's less than 2k, I walk rather than riding my speeder. I mask scent and conceal because as a Ranger, I shouldn't be getting attacked by critters and NPCs in MY backyard. I areatrack for critters to hunt.

I may not know every planet. I've never even been to Dantooine, and the Force willing, I'll never be persuaded to go. But I've camped for days in the quiet places of Endor. I've swam the rivers of Corellia for over an hour, and cried at the desolation of the Agrilat Crystal swamps when I got there. I've hunted the hills of Dathomir for hours on end without ever seeing another person except for a speeder trail in the distance. When I get wounded due to my own incompetence, I keep hunting. I learn to cope with the lessened HAM.
