Thread: Why AFK Macros make you stupid
Yeah, I understand where you are coming from, but look at it from other POV's...
I for one don't have the play time to be able to sit in a camp for 30 minutes for 1200 xp. If I'm on to play, I want to be hunting and interacting, not camping. 30 minutes is normally around 10% of my available play time per week. When camping was the last two boxes I needed for my Master's box, I AFK macro'd while I was asleep or away from home just because it would have taken me six more months (in addition to the six months I had already spent) to master Ranger.
Some people (*cough*children*cough*) don't have to work 14 hour days 6 days a week (and if you think I'm lying, you're wrong. I drive a semi over-the-road, and that is my work week) and can play games 6 hours a day. Great, just don't go dis-ing me because I have to do things a little different.
Yeah, you need to learn the system, but once you make one camp, you know camping. I still throw up camps when I can (just because the Hi Tech Field base looks like a spawn site, and I always get visitors) even though I don't need to. People drop by, we talk, they go there way sometimes, sometimes we group....
AFK Macros don't kill people, Rancors kill people...
Its called addiction....got it from Beta and haven't found a 12 step yet......
And yes, busting tail to make Master Ranger is respectable, but remember that there are other POV's than just yours. I mastered Ranger in BETA, Ranger was my pet profession, and I helped fix a lot of problems (you think its bad now....whoo. Used to be, you could use Rescue to pull fireof a PC to you, thereby initiating PvP without need for faction.....not to mention trap ranges were inside melee range and initiated combat the moment you threw it.....)but face it, the sheer amount of WS xp vs the little amount you receive for camping is just plain wrong. Especially since camps are, for all intents and purposes, useless.
Try to find a group willing to sit in a camp for 10 minutes, I dare you.....

Master Ranger/Master Squad Leader
Eclipse Server
The true height of entertainment with early Rescue was in the not knowing of how it worked....
I was hunting Fambaa with a relative noob to the Scout profession, and was basically in a supporting role (back when a level 4 skill in Marksman would let you whoop a Fambaa) and I had targeted the noob-in-question to try to pull a Fambaa from her. Instead, I pulled her shots to me (didn't know you had to target the creature you wished to pull....go figure).
Yeah, it was a grief tool......and fun for a bit.....until it was used AGAINST me....
I've felt more like a ranger with novice scout than I have with Master Ranger ![]()
Truth is I kinda agree with you..its about going out in the wilds of SWG and exploring around. The problem is...you really dont need more than a few boxes of scout to really experience and get the most out of that.
Since they changed the rules for pulling out pets & such, I prefer to just plop down on the ground wherever I am, put on some cheesy mask scent that might fail (I like the sense of danger, hehe), and heal or do whatever I need to do.
Point is...the Ranger..is inside of me, not some skillbox I have. When Ranger came up for the hologrind I didnt feel the least bit ashamed of setting up shop outside of Coronet and grinding some practice camps and neither should anyone else. Im a valued member on any hunting party not because I can set up an industrial complex, or harvest 100 more hide than the other guy, but because I can keep my cool and make do out in the middle of nowhere.
If your that type of person, Ranger is probably a blast for you & gives you the most bang for your buck, but you shouldn't put down others just grinding the profession. To me..that just makes you look like the dumbazz..not the guy macro-tenting just outside of town....
Ah.. Now don't get me wrong, I think that JB's viewpoints as expressed are a bit narrow, but I don't disagree with them entirely. I'm a bit more politic in game with peopleI have to deal with, but here I'll say it out right; grinding is bloody stupid and lazy.
So yes, I did something stupid and lazy. I was impatient and wanted my Master box. But when it comes down to it, I generally despise grinders. Anyone who plays a game with the attitude of "suffer now to have fun later" is pretty stupid in my book, and that's the attitude of most grinders, be they holo-grinders or otherwise. I did eventually succumb, and it's not something I'm proud of, but it's what I did, and I don't think it makes me any less a Ranger, because other than that little slip, I've not slipped. When I did my trap focus, it was with a variety of different traps because I was giving traps a try for the second time since Scout, and was beginning to realize that they weren't as useless as I'd thought.
So no, JB's not a dumbazz.. He's the grumpy old Ranger who tells it like he sees it, and doesn't candy coat it for any one He's the one who expresses the same irritation and frustration that we have to deal with when the dozen or so holo-rangers come in here looking for tips on how to denigrate or beloved (but underloved) profession further by reducing it to a grind. I should hope that JB doesn't really begrudge me my hours of grinding out camping in the quiet places of Rori while I was off to class, but if he does, well, that's his prerogative. It doesn't really bother me because I know that I am a Ranger. While I might defend the idea that not everyone is as hardcore as he is, and hope to get him to change his tune (fat chance..), it's not his opinion or anyone elses that decides for me whether or not I am a Ranger.
It really boils down to...."when is it okay to AFK grind?" Is there a difference in someone grinding a skill tree that requires you to stay in one place and do nothing, versus people who AFK grind combat skills such as Rifleman by standing in front of the Moenia cantina and AFK fighting the Mummer's?
I ground the last couple of boxes of Wilderness Survival just because doing it the "hard" way was just too dang boring.....My rifleman, trap and scout xp I got the old fashioned way, I killed for it....
