Hi guys, I'm Grinding my way up to master ranger at the moment and was just wondering which of the above combat professions I ought to take, I love the rifleman but when it comes up to up-close and personel I'm a bit useless with him, however I've also been working on the swordsman tree as well but have realised on the limited points given to use i would like to hear other's idea's on the 2 combat classes.

Thanks

This thread about templates may help you decide. I have never been a swordsman, so it is hard for me to comment on that, but as a master Rifleman with a full suite of buffs, I can cut through just about anyhting with little to no effort.

Yeah I had a look @ the templates but I'm still not a 100% which to go with so far.

Really it all depends on your kind of fighting. Rifle gives you tons of damage types sword is kinectic and blast. Sword's defenses arent that great but neither are rifles. If you think you can learn to use a droid to keep your target at range go rifle.

I am a master swordsman, working on finishing the survival tree( the honest way) . And right now , i am absolutely having a blast being both. I have been hunting for the past 2 weeks or so , with just food buffs (accaragm and gammorl) and i haven't found anything that i have not been able to take down.

But really it just comes down to how u like to play . Up close and dirty, or ranged and stealthy. I wish i had another slot on Lowca to try a rifle/ranger combo, it seems like it would be alot of fun.

It just doesn't matter.

Anything goes with Ranger. ANY combat profession works, if you know what in the hell you are doing and can use common sense and a modicum of brains.

These posts are getting tiring. Should I use this or that???

dude (or dudette) whatever floats your boat.

Ain't no magical answers, we ain't gonna be uber.

heh the only reason i asked is because I'm definately wanting to work up to master ranger, however at the moment I have both the swordsman tree started and completed the rifle/suppression tree in markmen and i use both for fighting, I was just curious to get other peoples idea's on the combat sets thats all.

Fair do's you get tired seeing this but all i was doing was weighing up my options to which to consider. I know we ain't ment to be the uber classes though I think some points of being a ranger could be worked on a revamp (maybe move conceled shot over from rifles) anyway thanks for you idea's here, anyother idea's are welcome here as well.

While it's true that with swordsman you tend to only get blast and kinetic hit types, as a Mranger Mswordsman, I have yet to encounter any group of anythings I haven't been able to take out in the environment. That is excluding the big boys of course, which I haven't really tried solo yet.

However, if you ever intend to go pvp, then rifles would be the better of the two, as in a war, it's the melee'ers who et cut down before they even get to swing.

Just my two cents

Hrmmm just noticed on the ranger templates it's got a notice about the scythe not having ap3, when I've heard on a few of the other forums that with a properly made scyth it has ap3.... any ideas?

Scythes are AP2 and there hard to not make properly since they require an ugly factory run. The only AP3 player weapons are the T21 and the commando rocket launcher

Sword is good cause maybe you could take out nighsisters and be better in Dungeons butI think rifle is a better match for Ranger.

With rifle you stay clean most of the time when hunting in the field..armor lasts forever ... and your expensive SEA's.

Suppose you want to hunt Wooly on Endor ... Mantigrue Screecher is the best (25k on mission terminals). But they have strong disease so you'll be black-bared -999 in each HAM and need to see the doctor by the end of the buff session if you have to melee them. With Rifle they are dead in like 10 seconds before they even know what happened.

Camouflage works in conjunction with Rifle Concealment Chance and Conceal Shot. Concealshot you can solo some high end stuff. Can a Swordsman/Ranger solo a Blurrg Raptor? (maybe i don't know)I knowI can concealshot kill one though no problem and it helps to have camo.

Master Ranger / Master Swordsman here, who used to fightalong sidea Master Ranger / Master Rifleman. From what I can tell you they're damn near equal. They both have little defense but hit real hard, and have the added bonus of hitting the mind pool. From hunting with my friend the only real differences I could see are...

  • /Maskscent and /Conceal seemed to be much more effective for him since he was usually prone and could hit from a much farther distance than I could. He could also use /concealshot and slowly pick away at targets from a safe distance.

  • Traps seemed to be far more useful to me. This is for a couple of reasons. One is that, with any Melee / Ranger profession traps greatly increase the range you can hit from. For example; I use traps from 49m's away to seperate and draw out single creatures thatnon-Ranger melee fighterswould otherwisehave a difficult time with. The other is that, while most Rifleman specials work correctly, Swordsman specials are absolutely fubar. Swordsman have very fewstatus effects, so I'm probably the one Ranger who finds the status effects of some of our trapsuseful.

In reality, I think it comes down to what you like to play.

There are 10 types of people in this world... those who know binary and those who don't.
